Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to the point where all parts of pop culture come together. Well, the guys of Broken Lizard did Super Troopers in 2001. What's been going on since then and what's coming up in the future? We've got all you need to know coming up right here. In the meantime, who is and isn't going to be the Incredible Hulk? It's Monday, July 12, 2010. Let's get to the point right now.
This is the point, the point radio, get the point radio. Kevin Heffernan might not be a household name. He's an actor, writer, producer and director, but more importantly, he's a member of the Broken Lizard comedy group. The guys who've given us some great cult comedy like Club Dread and of course Super Troopers. And now a project that Kevin directed is on the DVD shelves. It's called Slammin' Salmon. And
what's it about? I think pretty much that it's kind of a down the middle comedy, you know, kind of, we've tried to return to the Super Troopers roots that we had and made like an independent film that just we try to pack as many laughs into it as we could. And I think, you know, I think we can't give you a laugh per second quotient, but you know, I think we've got a lot of good
laughs in there and we're pretty happy with it. It's kind of it's just to give an overview of it. We play waiters in a restaurant and the restaurant's owned by a crazy former heavyweight champ of the world, like a Mike Tyson guy played by Michael Hart Duncan. And he sets up a contest and over the course of that night, this one night, he's going to give the top selling waiter 10,000 bucks and the lowest selling waiter he's going to kick the crap
out of. And so it's just kind of we try to pack as many jokes into that thing as we could. That's no doubt. The Broken Lizard is a team effort. And this was Kevin's first crack at going from in front of the camera to the director's chair. So how was that? It was definitely a different thing. Like I, you know, when we made our previous movies, we would make it and Jay would be directing and then we just give him a lot of shit. You know, we'd make
fun of him a lot of stuff. And you didn't appreciate the fact that when you're sitting in that position, you actually have like seven or eight things in your mind at the same time. And, and, and, you know, as your the scenes are going on, you're trying to make sure that that light's in the right place. And, you know, that wardrobe is proper. And are they saying a line, you know, I had appreciation for Jay about how many things you had to keep
in his head at the same time. And so that was kind of fun. But it was, it wasn't so bad because it's kind of the same crew we always use and a lot of the same cast feel you. So it wasn't like I was thrown to the wolves or anything, you know, it's a comfortable kind of environment for me to do it, which was, which was great. And would he do it again? I'd love to. I'd love to. You know, something that we talked about is, you know, in order
to keep, you know, pushing projects forward, it's good to have different guys, you know, running different things. And then you can kind of keep a lot of more plates spinning in the air, you know. And so I think we're, we've talked about that. And I'm hoping, I'm hoping, I think everyone was happy with how it did and how the movie turned out. And I think everyone was confident that I'd do it again. So, you know, I think I hope that
I get another chance in the future. Broken Lizard's live comedy act is well, something you really have to see. And because it's a tour, well, not every city gets a crack at it. But now there's some plans to expand that audience. Last month we shot actually the live show for Comedy Central as a concert movie. And
so I think we're going to, it'll air on Comedy Central in September and then there'll be a DVD version of it. And then I think next fall we talked about then maybe starting and we'll kind of mount a new show with new material and then head back out there. You know, it's like, that live show is something that we had never done before last year. I mean, when we did it, when we were first starting out, we used to do clubs in New York City. But
to do the live show like that, we had done it before and it ended up being a blast. And we did, you know, things we would have done a long time, like stand up and things like that. I think everyone had the bug and everyone's happy to go out there and do it again. We'll talk more to Kevin about a whole bunch of things, including Super Troopers 2. All that's coming up.
The fight, radio. It's Monday, July 12, 2010. Here's what's going on in pop culture. America's love affair with the animated movie continued this weekend, pushing Despicable Me seriously to this top of the box office. 60 million was the total ticket intake there. Twilight Eclipse came in at number two with just almost half of that. $33 million. Predators opened up a poor
third 25 million for that. And Toy Story dipped down to number four this week with 22 million. Also within the top 10, the A-Team still in at number nine, 73 million, almost 74. So far for that film and not too far under that in the top 20, Iron Man is down to number 14 with a total of 310 million so far this summer. Some more unusual Marvel casting news in the rumor. Now it looks like Ed Norton won't be
in the Avengers, but the Hulk will. Reports first came out that Marvel Studios was casting an unknown in the role. Now a new announcement from Marvel has said that there will be a recasting of the Hulk, but that it will be a name actor. No real reason for this. I guess budgets or the overstuffed budget of a film like the Avengers could be part of it. Certainly it isn't because Norton has been a problematic actor. His work in the Incredible Hulk, although
the film not being the dynamite blockbuster that Marvel had hoped for, was certainly true to the comic book version of Bruce Banner. Right now though, still in the rumors as they're putting together the cast for the Avengers and with announcements to be made over the next couple of months. Look for another Deadpool series for Marvel, this time a Max title, appropriately called Deadpool Max. If you think you're a little overstuffed on Deadpool
comics, well this one might be different. It's drawn by Kyle Baker from the cowboy Wally show, Birth of a Nation, Why I Hate Saturn, The Bakers, and so many other great comics. It'll be out sometime later this year with a totally different, well shall we say direction than some of the other Deadpool comics. There's a rumor that started, it has pretty much ended, and if you hear it, well you can certainly put your thumb on it. Chris
Columbus probably will not be involved with the reboot of the Superman movie. It was reported a few days ago that he might get the director's nod, along with the film that is being produced by Christopher Nolan and the one that David Goyer is associated with, but now apparently not as a director. Columbus produced those fantastic four films a few years ago, as well as a number of other non-superhero entities in the movie theaters, so the official word
is, no director yet for the Man of Steel. It takes a whole lot to keep up with all the Hollywood superhero casting movies, here's another one for you. Allegedly Matthew Vaughn and the guys at Fox have gone to Kevin Bacon with a job offer that would put him on the cast list for X-Men First Class. No word yet exactly what character he'd play, although allegedly it is a villain. Now we've got to page through all of our well-passed 30
or so years worth of X-Men comics to see which one we think Bacon just might fit. The New York comic concept for later this year, in New York of course, has added another round of guests to their already growing list that's included in names like Adam Hughes, Steve McNiven, Bob Layton and Greg Pack. Adam Hughes has been announced as a guest, and now Stan Lee has been added to the list as a spotlight guest of honor. He joins John
Romita and John Romita Jr. appearing together as Keystone Ghezovana at the show. The show runs from October the 8th to the 10th later on this year at the Javits Center in New York City, and for continuing information of course, you can get it with our friends at REED Exhibitions at mediumatlarge.net. The direct to DVD sequel for 30 Days of Night, 30 Days of Night Dark Days, will be released very soon on DVD. It comes of course in the combination of a regular
DVD and a Blu-ray combo pack, and it'll be in stores on October the 5th ahead of the Halloween holiday. The sequel to The Vampires in the Month-Long Night of the Alaskan Winter Story was co-written of course by Steve Niles, who created the comics published by IDW. There's plenty of extras packed on the Blu-ray version, including a featurette called the gritty realism of Dark Days that details not just the production design, but also the makeup and special effects behind it. And if Dark Days
is a success, Sony says there will be more direct to DVD 30 Days of Night sequels. It was a big summer for the big three at DC. Superman hit issue number 700, so did Batman, and Wonder Woman hit issue number 600 amid a little bit of controversy about that costume change, and that alone has caused the issue to sell completely out from DC. There is a second printing with a brand new cover by artist Don Kramer on the way. If you want to be sure to get that, to contact your retailer as
soon as possible, as DC will be shipping the second printing of Wonder Woman number 600 sometime over the next couple of weeks. Tokyo Pop has announced an agreement with the movie distribution internet giant Hulu under the terms of which Hulu will present premieres of Tokyo Pop's long-form content, including films like Spring in Chaos and the live-action manga Van Von Hunter. There'll be some selections also of Tokyo Pop's manga motion comics as well on Hulu. To get more
information on it, well first you probably should be stalking Hulu for this. There is an app that's going to be available for purchase for the iPhone and the iPad soon, and there should be more information on the Tokyo Pop relationship up on Hulu sometime by the end of July. It's been a mainstay in the wrestling world for a while, and of course with movies for well a few decades, so how about a music video for an upcoming comic series? There's one out there with a great
heart-pounding soundtrack for Shadowland, the new noir series that Marvel has kicked off that'll hopefully bring Daredevil to the forefront of the Marvel universe by the end of the season. He's a very talented musician in need of a comeback. Here's
how he's doing it. Prince told the British tablet the daily mirror that, and I quote, The internet is completely over. I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anybody else. They won't pay me in advance for it, and then they get angry when they can't get it. All these computers and digital gadgets are no good. The internet's like MTV. At one time, MTV was hip and it suddenly became outdated. End quote. That is so precious.
I don't have to defend the internet to people who are listening to me on the internet right now, but let's take a look at the numbers. Prick and Mortar record stores, sadly, are going out of business faster than a rolling blackout on 103 degree day. iTunes has sold over 10 billion tracks, billion with a B, and they have serious competition from Amazon, Walmart, Napster, Rhapsody, e-Music, and dozens of others. Prince, it's easier for your fans to bootleg your music
than it is for them to jump in their car, drive to Costco, stand in line, and pay more for your latest CD. So stop farting in the swimming pool. You're not impressing anybody.
