Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to The Point, where all parts of pop culture come together. A hit series for USA Network is White Collar. And series star Matt Bomer stops by to talk about that and maybe a return to Chuck. And comics on Tuesday? Well, it's going to happen, just not for the rest of us. It's Monday, August 30, 2010. Let's get to The Point right now. This is The Point, The Point radio, get The Point radio. On the list of success stories
for the USA Network is White Collar. And after two full seasons, series star Matt Bomer said he has his character of Neil, well, pretty down pat. I think he's a human being at the end of the day. And he's, even though he is this slick, sort of morally ambiguous con man on top, he's also a guy who's a diehard romantic and is really sloppy when it comes to decision making in terms of his love life. You know, he had a very specific childhood, we'll get
into more as a season regresses that made him who he is. So I think as an actor, you're always your character's defense is wrong. But I love him. I think he's a human being. He's always trying to pursue things with certain flair. With White Collar, well, things can go a number of different ways. And Matt's character just might end up back in prison. Oh, I mean, I think that's sort of been played that cars been played. And I'm sure I'll probably
be back in an orange jumpsuit before it's all said and done. But in that in that aspect, certainly, it's important to remind the audience and Neil from time to time, what's at stake for him. So I think it's important for everybody to understand that if he fucks up, he is back. And so, you know, hopefully, it'll only be briefly. All together, that's something that that is not totally uncomfortable with.
I mean, one of the reasons I love the part so much and fell in love with the beginning with is that I love the idea of this character who was a three dimensional, fleshed out human being. But at the end of the day, as an audience member, you could never really trust him. You never really knew what he was going to do next. And I hope there's always that tension with the audience. Emma Peter, he's always testing his boundaries. So I don't want to see him jump across that wall.
So I hope I hope if he's since his adult and he does something that probably romantically related that gets him put back with the FBI with the collar. So what about the future? Fans want to know what about a love interest? I would like that. Yeah, I mean, I completely respect the relationship with Kate and that the amount of motivation it gives for the character, especially the first two seasons, it's been amazing and
heartbreaking and incredible to get to go on that journey with him. But I would like to see him open those doors. Even if it's just, you know, one thing here or there, you know, it'd be fun to get to do. So yeah, I don't know that I want to see him getting married next episode, but I want to see him have a fun. Last year, Matt had a couple of great guest shots on the series. Chuck, anything new there? I don't know. I mean, I had a blast working on that show. Truly. Zach Levi is one of my favorite
viewers who I've ever gotten to work with. Everybody on that show is so cool and down to earth. They treated me so well from the get go. That'd really be more of a question for Chris B. to ask for Josh. But if they ever want to have you back, I'd be honest. My collar continues with new episodes every week. There's a marathon of episodes later on this month and plenty of time to catch up on past episodes as well at USA Networks dot com. It's Monday, August 30th,
2010. Here's what's going on in pop culture right down to the wire neck and neck over the weekend. The last exorcism and takers delivered a photo finish for the box office with both films pretty much ending up with the same on the top list over the weekend. Estimates were 21 million, three hundred thousand for exorcism and for takers, 21 million. Also, just a number three was another just under 10 million for the expendables bringing that film so far up to about 82 million.
Also in the top 10, the other guys were also in the top 10 vampires suck at number six. Nanny McVie returns at number eight. And the second week out, Piranha 3D dropped all the way down to number 10. Special edition Avatar hit the theaters this week. It came in at number 12, picking up just about four more new million dollars to that film. And speaking of pickups, Toy Story 3 has now become a billion dollar franchise. It became the seventh movie ever to
reach one billion dollars at the worldwide box office, moving past Dark Knight to rank sixth on the all time chart. There's a whole new crop of rumors out there about the Fantastic Four movie. Nothing solid yet, but they're pretty interesting. Stephen Moyer from True Blood is supposedly in the running for the part of Dr. Doom and for the Thing, which by the way will be CGI this time. Bruce Willis seems pretty natural. Right now, the plan will be for the film to shoot in 3D in the
spring of this year and be released in theaters in the summer of 2012. Here's the latest on Mission Impossible 4. It might not be Mission Impossible 4, the new film which will feature Tom Cruise and it is directed by Brad Bird. May have a title that goes into a different direction from the previous three films. In fact, there's no guarantee that it'll even use the words Mission Impossible. Jeremy Renner is going to be introduced as a character they're hoping they can spin off in
a few more MI based movies. Tom Cruise allegedly will be returning as we said as Ethan Hunt, but again no word on whether or not we'll see Simon Pegg or Ving Rames or if it even will be considered a Mission Impossible movie. James McTeague, the guy behind V for Vendetta, looks like he's found the person to play his Edgar Allan Poe in the film that he's had in the works for quite a while. And that person is John Cusack, quite a turn from Say Anything. Like we said, the project
has been circulating for quite a while. It's a period piece set in the 1850s in Baltimore in the early days of Poe and will more than likely be a real dark turn for Cusack who hasn't really done this type of role so far in his career. Been a long time coming but finally it looks like in January of 2011 and then after that comic stores all over America will get their product on Tuesday, not on Wednesday. Now don't get too excited. It's not going to change your weekending.
Stores will get their books in on Tuesday but will not be allowed to put them on sale until Wednesday. There'll be an embargo system and a series of punishments for stores that break the system and Diamond is going to be fairly strict about this they say along with their partner publishers like DC, Image and Marvel. What this should mean is that stores will be able to be prepared to open their doors on Wednesday with new books all prepared and make Wednesday a little
smoother day from the business end of things. You may want to talk to your own personal retailer about how this will affect them or get their opinions as well but again it begins in January of next year. As you think about this next story keep in mind that in Britain a television series what we call a television season here usually is about six episodes and that's going to be the plan for Doctor Who in 2011. Now don't get too upset. It's not going to be another one of those
years where we get two or three specials and then that's it for an entire 12 months. There'll be 13 episodes of Doctor Who according to producer Steven Moffat but it will be broken up into two different series one of the spring and one in the fall as well. BBC has put a positive spin on it saying that each series will have two premieres, two finales and even more event episodes as well. In the meantime the nearest Doctor Who event of course is the Christmas specials set for airing
just a few months from now. Somewhere out of the melee of San Diego Lady Death is returned and she's free. Lady Death Premiere is a comic that was handed out for free in San Diego and Wizard World Chicago over the past month or so. Now you might be able to get your own copies even if you don't leave the neighborhood. Lady Death Premiere is being sold to retailers in batches of 50 with certain variants that are thrown in as a special deal to make the retailers have the incentive to
give you those copies for free. It's a 12-page color story all to set up the new series of Lady Death which will continue in December starting with Lady Death Zero at that particular time. It's from Avatar Press by the way as far as publishers go. Talk to your retailer now to see if he's going to be getting you Lady Death Premiere for free and then keep in mind Lady Death does premiere with the new series issue zero in December from Avatar. Gazes live by you the Mad
Magazine animated series premieres on the 6th of September and if you've already missed that one well you can catch it I'm sure in repeats and a regular basis too every week on Monday at 8 30 in prime time on the Cartoon Network. Unlike the sketch comedy series this is actually Mad Magazine and more the name only with the entire bunch of well idiots as they say producing regular parodies like CSI Carly, Toys for Bratz, Ava Turds and so much more. The new launch is part
of the animated push from Warner Brothers. It also includes this series with Young Justice and a revamped Looney Tunes. This place blows. Exterminate, annihilate, destroy. This is my gold. Gangland history is among my many passions and I don't mind saying I'm among the Legion who excel in Chicago history so it's only logical that I would look at the new TV series Boardwalk Empire with a jaundiced eye. Virtually every movie or television show on these subjects
was largely or completely bull. The Untouchables TV series had no bearing on reality but David Mamet's movie version was almost science fiction. If Daleks or Klingons popped up out of a squad car I wouldn't have been surprised at all. So I have no illusions about Boardwalk Empire. It's sort of the Injustice League of America featuring Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky, Al Capone, Arnold Rothstein and the man who put together both the Chicago outfit and the National Cosinostra, Johnny Torrio.
I'm not being dismissive of this show. These are great characters all larger than life in real life. It's got a hell of a pedigree. Many of the creators, writers, directors and producers were involved in the Sopranos, Deadwood and Rome. And Martin Scorsese is involved somehow. Best of all, Steve Usemi stars in the show. So I'm gonna pull the stick out of my ass and give Boardwalk Empire a shot. I'll hang in there at least for a while or until Daleks and Klingons show up. This
is my goal on the Pop Culture Channel. GetThePointRadio.com. Summer starts to wind down. The activity in the comic store this night. It was a tough choice this week for us to come up with our five things you need to check out. Might even slip in a six, but if you don't count, you'll never notice. In the meantime, as you head into the DC area, a couple of different things there. First of all,
a revival of a great 70s comic, The Freedom Fighters. Concept has been kicking around in DC well, as we know for decades now. They're starting it all over again with a new first issue and a new series. And speaking of revivals, DC is attempting reviving the Warbook concept begins this week with Our Army at War number one. Again, you may not be a fan of the concept. You might be a fan of the older stuff and this might not appeal to you or it might be an introduction
to a whole new world. It's worth at least a look from IDW, one of the better miniseries from the Angel run the past year or so has been Barbary Coast. Now the first of those are available in a trade paperback version. Volume one out from IDW this week from Marvel. Scarlet number two, you knew how fast that the Brian Michael Bendis book blew out of the stores a month or so ago. Here's your chance to grab number two. There will be at least a second or maybe a third
printing of number one available in most good comic stores. Also a collection this week, the Torch miniseries. The one imagined or shall we say reimagined by Alex Ross, the story of one of the very first superheroes in the Marvel universe. And again, collected in a trade paperback for you this week. One other quick note, a new Wolverine series begins this week with number one. There'll be some variants on that, but we'll get to that in a little bit. You need to head to the nearest
comic store in your area. Check them out always with the comic book locator service at 1-888 comic book or with a free app that's available in the iTunes app store for your iPhone or your iPad.
