Red: A Haida Manga

A stunning fusion of ancient Indigenous tradition and high-octane graphic narrative, Red delivers an epic tale of rage and retribution through the groundbreaking medium of Haida Manga.

A 108-page hand-painted epic, Red shatters the boundaries between traditional Indigenous art and the cinematic pulse of the Japanese graphic novel. Created by the pioneer of the “Haida Manga” movement, Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, this groundbreaking work uses the flowing, interconnected lines of Northwest Coast imagery to tell a story that is as kinetic as any modern comic, yet as deep as an ancestral oral history.

In the frost-rimmed islands off the Pacific Northwest coast, a leader’s pride becomes his people’s greatest peril. Years after his sister was stolen by a band of raiders, Red–the volatile leader of a small Haida village–receives word of her sighting in a nearby community. He becomes consumed by a single mission: rescue and revenge. But as his rage grows, Red becomes blinded by retribution, leading his people toward a catastrophic confrontation that threatens to destroy everything he holds dear. Tragic and timeless, Red is reminiscent of such classic stories as Oedipus Rex and Macbeth.

A former Amazon Top 100 selection and multi-award nominee, Red proves visual literacy is a language without borders. Now available in a high-quality paperback edition, Red remains an essential read for fans of epic tragedies, collectors of fine art, and anyone seeking to experience the transformative power of Indigenous visual literacy. It is a dazzling, devastating journey into the heart of the human spirit.
