Well, the internet connection is back in our world and we are too. Hey, it's Mike Raub on the point where all parts of pop culture come together and guess what? Stone Cold Steve Austin's in front of a camera again, but is it a WWE camera? Torchwood is back too and the A team scores a C-.
It's Monday, June 14th, 2010. Let's get to the point right now. This is the point, the point radio, get the point radio. Stone Cold Steve Austin's latest project is called The Stranger and you can guess it's got plenty of action in there.
But as his acting career evolves, we ask Steve if he ever thought about playing something a little lighter. I would love to do something more lighthearted and I've been striving to do that in LA and take more meetings in that regard. It's funny, I was so effective and so good at being Stone Cold Steve Austin that people
think that that's who and what I am 24-7. I love being Stone Cold Steve Austin, but in my private life, man, I laugh my ass off every day and comedy and humor is such a huge part of my life and it's a part of me that a lot of people wouldn't think that exists. So I would love to do something like that and I'm really looking for more opportunities
to stretch into that and maybe even to do an action buddy type comedy flick all out 48 hours lethal weapon. Okay, there's movies. How about series television? Oh, absolutely.
As a matter of fact, we've pitched a couple of ideas and we've had one pitched at us. TV really interests me. I really think that could be, I see what's on TV right now. I don't particularly watch a whole lot of TV, but I think that we've had some pretty good ideas that would fit real nicely on TV and kind of a, you know, I'd love to be on
a series type show. So it's definitely something that I'm considering and, and pitching ideas. And the inevitable question, will we ever see him back in the WWE room? You know, in the wrestling business, they tell you to never say never. I would say a real, real, real slim chance.
I had so many great memories and the business in general, my whole career, particularly with the WWE, you know, I was really good for that company and that company was really good for me and good to me. I got a lot of great memories and I would rather leave the wrestling part of Stone Cold Steve Austin, you know, just leave that guy alone and leave the memories that people have
of him. It would be, it would be interesting to come back, but the temperature has changed so much. It's a PG rated show and Stone Cold was a very edgy act. And I just don't think the character would be the same with the, with the guidelines and restrictions that are placed on the, the performers today.
Now, I think the PG direction was a great direction as far as that company advances into the future. But I say leave well enough alone. I had a great time, but now it's time for the, you know, the WWE focuses on the young men and women that are going to be the biggest part of their future.
Next up for Stone Cold is The Expendables, the high budget movie with just about every big name action star from Sly to Arnold and right on down the left. That was a great time filming that movie and working with Sly and all those other people that were involved in that set. And it was, it was just a dream to work with so much Stallone who's been, you know, one
of my favorite actors for a long time. And I've followed, I think I've seen every movie he's ever done. So it was a pleasure to work with Sly. The Stranger available right now on DVD. It's Monday, June 14th, 2010.
Here's what's going on in pop culture. The Karate Kid waxed its way up to the number one spot in the box office over the weekend. $56 million, pretty much even for that one. In its first week out, the A-Team, the other 80s remake, not so good. Just about half the take of Karate Kid with $26 million.
Shrek Forever After down to number three with another 15 plus million. So in the top 10, Iron Man 2 still in there with another 4.5 million. Total just under 300 million so far for that movie. Just outside the top 10, Robin Hood at number 11 with another $2.7 million. Total there just under 100 million so far for that film.
The Korean company Day One Media is producing a 3D animated feature based on the popular Gone manga. The feature film is in production, expected to be finished by the end of next year. They recently signed a deal with Rainbow Media which will distribute the film in Europe. By the way, in case you were waiting for the Gone anime TV series, this is pretty much
the next generation of that. Those ideas that we brought in to form in the 3D animated feature. Of course, Gone has been published in anime in the US since the 1990s. Three writers familiar to recent television series have all been contracted to write the treatment for the second Green Lantern movie.
That's according to The Hollywood Reporter. Greg Berlanti, who you know from Dawson's Creek, Jack and Bobby, Brothers and Sisters and Eli Stone. His former writing partner Mark Guggenheim, who you know from both Eli Stone and Flash Forward as well as a considerable amount of comic book work.
And Michael Green who also worked with Berlanti and with Guggenheim on Jack and Bobby and also did Kings, Heroes and Everwood for television. They'll all be working on the film according to The Hollywood Reporter in addition to working on the Flash treatment as well. Originally, Berlanti was hired to direct the current in-production Green Lantern movie,
but that was given then to Martin Campbell who had Michael Goldenberg rewrite that Green Lantern script. Mezco Toys scores another one now. They're doing the Scott Pilgrim figures. They'll do eight inch plush figures of Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers.
All just in time for the Scott Pilgrim versus the World movie that comes up very soon. The graphic novels of course have been in comic stores and selling well for a while. The film is on the way. It opens in theaters on August 13th and you can get the plush figures from Mezco in good comic stores in July.
Arguably the busiest guys in Hollywood, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orsi have taken on a new project. They're producing a new film called Now You See Me written by the guy who did Prince of Persia and it talks about an FBI squad who are chasing a well a super team. If you want to use that term.
Of the world's greatest illusionists who pull off a series of bank heist during their performances, giving the money to the audiences and staying one step ahead of the law. As you know Orsi and Kurtzman are pretty busy on other projects right now including Star Trek II, Cowboys and Aliens, season three of Fringe and the first season of Hawaii Five O set to debut in just a couple of months.
It truly is the best news possible for Torchwood fans. The series is returning and to US television as well. Stars is now teaming up with BBC to bring a 10 episode season of Torchwood to not only BBC but to Stars as well. The series will premiere in the summer of 2011.
John Barrowman and Eve Miles will return in the series. There'll be other cast members announced soon and even more good news. Russell T Davies returns as the showrunner for the series and Julie Gardner returns as the executive producer of this new series of Torchwood. Some unconfirmed but interesting rumors on the internet about the possibility of what
Indiana Jones Five will be about. Allegedly shooting is to begin next year. Harrison Ford is on standby. Shia LaBeouf also has a central role and it looks like the plot will be centered around the Bermuda Triangle, the area over the North Atlantic Ocean where a number of aircraft
are said to have disappeared. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have both been working on a script for this and they're also reporting that the film will be done in quote the old fashioned way rather than the CGI effects of the last movie. It looks like Swamp Thing will be returning from the land of Vertigo in the DC universe
and back into the mainstream of DC Comics. Recently DC has cancelled a new five issue series that was planned to be done by Vertigo and written by China Melville. However now the Swamp Thing is back allegedly in the new Ethan Van Skyver Plastic Man series that DC is on the verge of announcing.
After that there are rumors that there will be a regular All Ages Swamp Thing series coming sometime later this year or early in 2011 from DC. With a television series on the way and some spin off books in the process too it looks like there's going to be even more fables from Vertigo. The DC Comic Mainstay is hitting issue number 100 very soon and there's rumors that there
will be a new fable series announced this year at San Diego Comic Con. Fables created by Bill Willingham and Mark Buckingham again has already been lined up for a TV series. There have been the spin offs as well and there was recently even advertising for the book on BBC America.
More than likely there will be more information on this by San Diego but it looks like Scott Hampton. The guy who originally did that beautiful painted Silver Heels comic for example back in 1983 and best known lately for his DC work on Simon Dark is said to take on a new Hellboy project with Mike Miniola.
The book will be done on Dark Horse of course and again there should be more information about the series announced by the time of Comic Con. No matter how you wish it they just won't go away and now the Smurfs are back in comic books in a way. The Smurfs graphic novels are going to be re-released from Papercut starting in September.
First up is The Purple Smurf which is actually a story that's never been released in English. Following that Smurfs and the Magic Flute which is the first comic story in which the characters appeared. That will come sometime in the fall and then in December will be The Smurf King. All are released in hardback and softcover volumes priced at about 6 bucks and 11 bucks
respectively. They'll have about 56 pages as well although a couple including the Magic Flute will have a few more pages. There's a live CGI hybrid feature currently in production by the way starring Neil Patrick Harris and there's even more Smurfs slated for a big promotional year in 2011.
WizKids has announced the creation of Star Trek Hero Clicks products. It'll be in your hands just in time for Christmas this year. The license includes characters from all the TV shows and the feature films as well as part of the big ongoing re-creation, re-launch I guess you would say of WizKids Hero Clicks. There are more DC characters on the way too.
A big announcement earlier in the month that they told us that they would be new DC creations from WizKids including a Blackest Night starter game, the Brave and Bold characters, a Jonah Hex set based later on the film sometime later this year in your hands, and a Brightest Day action pack that would be out sometime in October and then at the end of the year we'll see the DC's 75th anniversary set of Hero Clicks from WizKids.

Marvel Comics is a couple months into their Women of Marvel promotion and that raises an issue or two. The whole idea is fine. Honor, or well promote, the several hundred female characters that toil in the Marvel Universe.
Remind the readers that many are among Marvel's best. After all, women starring superhero comics generally don't sell very well and women starring superhero movies are without fail, failures. I realize there's a reason why the movies flop. They really, really suck.
Supergirl, Electra and Catwoman deserved better. But they stunk up the box office so badly I doubt they'd make a Black Widow solo movie right now even if Scarlett Johansson had a half dozen nude scenes. Eh, well, maybe not. No, Catwoman.
Catwoman will you never learn. But the fact is, these are just made up characters. It's not intrinsically harder to write, draw, direct and or act a woman superhero as it is a man. I understand avoiding crappy movies, but a lot of the superhero comics featuring women
are as good as anything on the racks. Given the growing percentage of women readers, you'd think there'd be a chance here. So kudos to Marvel for their promotion. And go to your friendly neighborhood comic book shop and take a superheroine out to lunch. This is Mike Gold on the Pop Culture Channel.

always the DC show. If you've not been following what's been going on in Batman, at least not closely, it would kind of like to decide about whether or not you want to venture back into the bad universe. Or your chance this week comes with a version of the Batman R.I.P. storyline in a rather
inexpensive trade paperback collection from DC. $15 will catch up on everything you need to know about Batman and his transition from major character to dead icon, at least for the past couple of years. Also from DC this week, second issue of the DC Universe Legacies. It's a 10-issue run, great artists doing a total recreation of the DC Universe the
early years. Pretty interesting the first issue and I think the second one deserves at least a look through. The classic Red Zonia stories from Marvel are remastered in a book called Classic Red Zonia Remastered. First issue out this week from Dynamic Forces.
One of the better independent comics, Love and Caves, collected this week in another trade paperback. This is the second one. It should be pretty easy for you to find the first one if you like this one. They're both from IDW.
And new this week, another number one Avengers book, this time in New Avengers number one, premieres from Marvel. All these and more comic stores waiting for you. You know how the girl goes and you find the latest one near you by going to the Comic Book Locator service at 1-888-COMIC-BOOK.
