To be filed under "I Don’t Know Where It Came From But I Like It," this image of characters from the popular Dragonball anime and manga series (and upcoming live-action film) drawn up a la The Simpsons recently popped up on the InterWebs. While it’s safe to assume Simpsons creator Matt Groenig had no hand in…
Spider-Man and the X-Men are almost always on television in one animated form of another. Heck, even iron Man is getting an animated series these days. Can’t we see new characters getting a shot at animated success instead of the same old same old? Apparently, we can. During BET’s network upfront presentation, it was announced…
ComicMix pals Michael Pinto and Brian Cirulnick were recently interviewed by the crew at StarBlazers.com, the official website of the Star Blazers animated series, and the conversation is an interesting read even if you’re someone who’s (gasp) not very familiar with the series — like me, for instance. Along with running the show over at…
ComicMix reader (and aspiring anime/manga artist) Heather recently sent me a gallery of photos from Anime Boston 2008, heralded as "The Northeast’s Largest Anime Convention." The three-day convention was held held last weekend at Hynes Convention Center. As anyone who’s attended enough anime, comics or pop culture-related conventions over the last few years will no…
Eight years ago an anime appeared that has stood, and even reverberated, the test of time. Blood: The Last Vampire was a groundbreaking and engrossing effort that clearly left virtually everyone who saw it wanting more. Clocking in at a breathless, seemingly unfinished, forty-eight minutes (just enough to fill a network TV hour slot),…
When the people of the future are in trouble, they turn to one thing to save them from the forces of evil -a tiny robot that doesn’t own a pair of pants and can deploy guns from his rear. Astro Boy is being adapted into a big budget CG movie by Warner Bros. and The…
Yesterday, the Hollywood Reporter dropped the news that Warner Brothers has snapped up the rights to make a two-part, live-action version of the Japanese Anime classic Akira. Not only that, but producing the film will be superstar Leonaro DiCaprio. In addition, first-time feature helmer Ruairi Robinson will be taking on the directing duties and Gary…
If you haven’t heard of Naruto yet, you’ve either been living in a cave or obsessively avoid all contact with manga; it’s the single bestselling series of comics in the US today, regularly placing multiple volumes on bestseller lists. (The animated version is also a decent-sized TV hit, especially among teenage boys.) In case you…
You can tell how popular any particular media event or personage is by how many ancillary products emerge. Something really popular will metastasize into toothbrushes, sports cars, sleepwear, foodstuffs, architecture, and so on – the specifics depend on what the original piece was, and who the audience is, but the number of those products is…
According to our friends at ICv2, Geneon Entertainment has cancelled all of their anime releases scheduled to ship after November 6th, citing high costs, declining sales, continued illegal downloading and the collapse of its sales and marketing agreement with ADV. This leaves continuing series such as Hellsing Ultimate, Karin, Kyo Kara Maoh, Shonen Onmyoji, Black…
“Sht runs dwnhill.” Those words of wisdom/warning were first spoken to me back in the mid-1980s, at lunch on the first day I started consulting for CBS-TV in California. The statement came back to me several times while watching this week’s offerings (as well as many, many times over the decades as I watched businesses…
