When I was younger, there was a Disney cartoon that my friends and I loved and which impressed our parents with its maturity and layered story-telling. The series was called Gargoyles, and it told the story of a clan of warrior creatures from 10th Century Scotland who are brought to modern-day New York City via…
The first trailer for the upcoming Iron Man: Armored Adventures cartoon is now online. The show, which appears to be somewhere between Ultimate Iron Man and the Iron Man movie, will show up on Nicktoons next year.
The National Post’s writer and cartoonist team of Ben Kaplan and Steve Murray recently chronicled their foray into a nudist colony in Ontario, Canada, and the resulting story and comic strip, well… they pretty much speak for themselves. From naked lawn care to threesomes in a hot tub, both features provide a funny, fish-out-of-water look…
This editorial cartoon was published in the Cincinnati Enquirer, before word of George Carlin’s death. I know this is a somewhat different definition of the word "comic" than we usually address here on ComicMix, but Carlin did much – perhaps more than anybody else – to mold and shape our attitudes over the past 40…
I already knew that Richard Thompson’s Cul De Sac was a damn fine comic, but it’s nice to have someone like Bill Watterson, creator of Calvin and Hobbes, confirm that assessment. Watterson has provided the foreword for the upcoming collection of Thompson’s popular series, titled Cul De Sac: This Exit. According to Thompson, Watterson’s words…
The breakthrough of the season, as far as superhuman heroism goes, might lie beyond such big-screen spectacles as Iron Man and the June 13 opening of The Incredible Hulk. The watershed lies, in part, in a set of Popeye the Sailor cartoons that have gone largely unseen – in authentic form, anyhow – since the…
Artist Carly Monardo, who works as a colorist on the hit Cartoon Network series The Venture Bros. and is known around the webcomic scene for her work on posters and other art for popular series such as The Adventures of Dr. McNinja (coincidentally, the subject of this recent interview), recently put out a call for…
You’ve likely heard a bit about a recent cartoon in the New Yorker’s cartoon caption contest (seen at right) that was a pretty direct ripoff of an old Jack Kirby cover. The New York Post, among others, called it plagiarism. This doesn’t delve too much into that debate, but Patrick House, the man who won…
Most digital art websites always remind me how little I know about Photoshop. For example, even if I spent the next full week with my nose in a copy of Photoshop for Dummies, I couldn’t begin to create anything like Pixeloo’s "Untooned" image of cartoon and videogame characters. Seen at right is Pixeloo’s "Untooned" version…
Geriatric superheroes appear to be all the rage these days, as a number of sites are linking to Italian artist Donald Soffritti’s illustrations of Superman, Spider-Man and a variety of other super-types in their Golden Years. Soffritti’s work is great, and I can’t help but giggle every time I look at his take on DC…
Born in Jamestown, New York in 1924, Brad Anderson started cartooning as a child. He attended Brocton Central School for high school, and while there sold his first cartoons (to an aviation magazine). Anderson served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, then attended Syracuse University’s School of Fine Arts. After graduating college, Anderson…
Nova Scotia newspaper The Chronicle Herald has vowed to defend an April 18 editorial cartoon by award-winning cartoonist Bruce MacKinnon after police received a complaint that the cartoon could qualify as "hate literature." The cartoon (pictured here) depicted the wife of Qayyum Abdul Jamal, who was arrested in 2006 on terrorism-related charges that involved an…
