Now you have no excuse not to hang up your super-suit… Comics Links Eddie Campbell writes about speech balloons (including his differences of opinion with Bryan Talbot). Yann Martel, author of the Booker Prize-winning novel The Life of Pi, has been sending a book and cover letter to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper every week…
There’s an exciting new trend in comics these days. Comic book writers are actually being hired to write comic books. Recently, we’ve seen guys like Jim Shooter taking on The Legion of Super-Heroes, Marv Wolfman on sundry Teen Titans and the newer-still Vigilante, Tony Isabella told me he’s got a full schedule of assignments and…
(See the continuation for an explanation of our "Bob & Godzilla" photo today.) Comics Links Publishers Weekly Comics Week talks to Matt Fraction, writer of Casanova. Steven Grant, at Comic Book Resources, thinks about Jack Kirby and the art of comic book covers, then and now. Brian Michael Bendis was interviewed by CBR about the…
Continued from last week… The following text contains the remarks of comic-strip master Roy Crane (1901 – 1977) from a visit with George E. Turner and Yrs. Trly. on May 13, 1969, in the Editorial Art Department of the Daily News & Globe-Times at Amarillo, Texas. George and I had become acquainted with the Texas-bred…
My friend Tony Isabella has mentioned that I give a good rant, Tony; this is about to be the rant to beat all rants! I am soooooo pissed. I had two columns ALREADY written so I could get ahead on my ComicMix deadlines. I have a great deal of work to do with my comic…
Bully makes a speech buried in a comment thread on decompression in comics that I’ve been saying for years, and deserves much wider play, so I’m running part of it here (but read the whole thing): "Read the books on their own, month by month, paying $2.25 (or whatever they are now), and it’s clear:…
A while ago we told you Amazing Spider-Man was going thrice-weekly and Sensational and Friendly were being canned. Some scoffed, some reached deeper into their pockets, and ultimately (and quite recently) Marvel confirmed. Now they’ve announced their creative team. Since just about the only single writer/artist duo alive that can handle producing 72 pages a…
(Continued from our July 15 Installment) Only on occasion nowadays do I revisit at any length the bizarre Southwestern region whose Dominant Culture gave rise to the chronic-to-acute exploits of Konstable Moe Lester. I use the word character facetiously, for in all his years of published misadventures (whether small-press or nearer some nebulous mainstream) and…
Comic Book Resources has the second half of their look at Homosexuality in Comics. Brian Cronin at Comics Should Be Good has a new, useful, term for our collective little dictionary of comics: False Epiphany Characters. (Also for that same dictionary, and from the same place: Grace Notes.) Steven Grant gives us a thumbnail history…
CHILI PALMER: You know how to write one of these? BO: There’s nothin’ to know. You have an idea, you write down what you wanna say. Then you get somebody to add in the commas and shit where they belong, if you aren’t positive yourself. Maybe fix up the spelling where you have some tricky…
Last week, we were discussing the cons of continued stories, specifically what’s wrong with them, and we posited that they have a major problem in the difficulty new readers (or audiences) have in understanding the plot and characters. I said that there were remedies for this problem and now I’ll suggest, a bit timidly, that…
Reviewed by Lillian Baker, age 8 I started making comics when I was three. When I was six, I made copies and started to sell them at soccer. Last year, when I was seven, I sold them at my dad’s table at the New York ComicCon. Alexa Kitchen wrote and drew her new book when…
