Denny O’Neil used to have a T-shirt that proclaimed “Growing old is not for sissies.” As I get older, the hard truth of that keeps coming back to me. Case in point. Two days ago, there was an article here in ComicMix about Gary Friedrich who lost his case against Marvel about participation in the…
Got a concept for you. Ready? Patron superheroes. You’re lovin’ it already, aren’t you? For those of you who have never been Catholic, here’s a quick definition of patron saint, via the invaluable Wikipedia: “A patron saint is a saint who is regarded as the intercessor and advocate in heaven of a nation, place, craft,…
Ah, there you are. Still with us. Good. You survived the turning of the new year and the doom some are predicting hasn’t happened. Yet. But be of good cheer, you who are longing to manifest the death instinct that Sigmund Freud said is common among homo sapiens. According to something I read somewhere, the…
Once, longer than a while ago, at this time of year, I would make a list of what were, in my opinion, the year’s ten best and ten worst movies. I was writing a column, on movies, for Marvel’s Epic Magazine, and I saw that as part of the job. Not that anybody told me…
Twice in two days this weekend, I ran into Garth Ennis on the street. Other than industry events, I haven’t seen him in nearly a decade (and then, on the street). Apparently, he lives about half a mile away from me, and has for eight years. Usually, if I see someone I know in a…
Collecting all the Twitter posts we did earlier today. If you’re not following the ComicMix Twitter feed, tsk tsk tsk… I have written before about the danger of distractions while writing. And Twitter can become a huge timesink. But Twitter can also actually help improve your comic writing, if you use it properly and understand…

MariFran O’Neil, wife of columnist, comics sensei, and dear friend Denny O’Neill, is recovering from a stroke she suffered late last week. She’s out of the hospital, in a rehabilitation facility, and we have no doubt that she’ll be out and teaching her students very soon. ComicMix sends best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Over here on ComicMix, we’ve been talking about The Shadow a lot recently – prompted by Denny O’Neil’s fine columns and Robert Greenberger’s first-rate interview with Shadow pulp reprint editor / publisher Anthony Tollin. Without belaboring a point, I’d like to refer you to another remarkable effort concerning comics’ most influential icon. There’s this really…
When we’re in a somber mood, which is an easy kind of mood to be in these days, we hope that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were not prophets. Joe and Jerry were, of course, the creators of Superman, and way back in 1938 they told what’s become known as Superman’s origin story. Surely you’re…
All hail to thee, Pulpus. Praised be thy name. What? You don’t know that you’re Pulpus, god of popular culture? Well, if I were you I’d get next to Shrinkus, god of psychotherapy, and do something about your identity crisis. Meanwhile – there are some questions I’d like to ask you. I assume that part…
