Rich Watson passes along an invitation from Alex Simmons regarding an exhibition he’s putting together at the Bronx Community College, entitled THE COLOR OF COMICS: Reflections of Images Behind and Within the Pages. Says Simmons, "this will be an exhibition comprised of characters of color in comics and the people behind them. Though the characters…
As mentioned previously on ComicMix, last night’s "MoCCA Monday" panel was held in conjunction with Friends of Lulu and the Ormes Society, and featured three enterprising women of color working in the comics field. Moderator (and Ormes Society founder) Cheryl Lynn Eaton interviewed Rashida Lewis, Jennifer Gonzalez and Alitha Martinez about their various projects, experiences…
Looks like Valerie D’Orazio is starting her new term as President of Friends of Lulu with a bang. Along with the Ormes Society (and the equally wonderful Cheryl Lynn Eaton), the group is sponsorting a panel, "Women of Color in Comics and Manga." On the panel: Alitha Martinez (Iron Man, Thor, Yume and Ever), Jenny…
Last week at the San Diego Comic-Con I was hosting a forum called “The Black Panel.” The panel was filled with heavy hitters from comics, film, television and animation. At one point during the Q&A a young man asked that more creators recognize and do stories about black atheists. I made a joke that the…
The new networking organization P.O.W.E.R. in Comics has issued a call to "group action: a list of recommended independent comics/graphic novels we like, created by women and minorites. These should be comics/graphic novels that are still in print and readily available." The lists would be published on various members blogs and sent to newspapers and…
Via Film Fodder, it seems the Wall Street Journal is taking notice of the Big Two’s desire to sell more comics to the gender that, you know, reads more. That would seem to put DC and Marvel one up on WSJ writer Matt Phillips, who cannot resist using the usual balan superhero-reference exclamation-point-laden headline, even…
For the past few years I have hosted a panel at various conventions called The Black Panel. Before that, every so often I used to be a part of a Blacks in Comics panel. I started the Black Panel to try and avoid all the “Marvel and DC are racist” dialogue that seemed to be…
Somewhere, Ororo Munro is yawning. And even the folks at Warner who parodied Snow White are wondering what took them so long. But Disney is finally getting around to creating its first black princess to star in her own animated movie. The protagonist’s name is Maddy, the fairy tale (which will debut in 2009) is…
For those who, like me, were disappointed that the Masters of American Comics art exhibition was fairly literal, in that all 15 of "the artists who shaped the development of the American comic strip and comic book during the past century" just happened to be white and male despite vast historical contributions to the artform…
If you think we’ve come a long way in butting out of people’s personal affairs, remember this: the last anti-miscegenation law prohibiting people of different races from marrying was repealed on November 7, 2000. Seven years later, an interracial couple breaks down one of the last barriers to a normal American family life: the newspaper…
As mentioned here on ComicMix back on February 12, Cheryl Lynn has been busy creating a new and very needed comics organization. The website is now live and ready for your participation! The Ormes Society, named after the legendary pioneering cartoonist of color Jackie Ormes, is an organization dedicated to supporting black female comic creators…
As one of the most popular artforms ever to originate in the US, you’d think comics would pay more attention to our indigenous population. Sadly, this industry has lagged along with just about every other one in exploring the rich history and contributions of the peoples who were here before we were. Coinciding with the…
