Apollo and Annette? Starbuck and Li’l Archie?

www.ComicMix.com Hi, it's Mike Raub and welcome to the weekend. It's a body going on! Here we go with another podcast and in the tradition of the holiday, let's put all of our eggs in one basket today and wrap up season 3 of Battlestar Galactica.

We're going to pull a couple of Archie lovers out of the closet and tell you exactly why and peek under the blanket at a net too. All that and more on April 7, 2007. ComicMix. At 0900, Sockson Ford Operations Base in Qatar was attacked. The only lead we have is this sound.

Well, the heat is on for Optimus Prime and Megatron and everybody's all excited about the Transformer movie. Of course, when it opens on July 4th, that heat is spreading over to the comics as well with a number of books selling out already, including the movie prequel comic book that came out a few weeks back. However, keep in mind there will be a special prequel free comic book day edition coming from IDW. If you want that, you've got to talk to your retailer. There's been plenty of time for that to come along.

In the meantime, a Transformers infiltration trade paperback, second printing is going to be coming out very soon. We'll let you know the exact ship date as soon as we know it. Talk about your summer blockbuster movies. Of course, Spider-Man number three, which has now got an entire city, the largest city in the country behind it. And you've heard about the fact that New York City is doing Spidey Week,

starting on April 30th and running through the 6th of May. About two dozen different live events in the Big Apple screenings, parties, exhibits, and a lot more going on. But there's a couple of things you can enjoy no matter what part of the country you live in. For example, the Spidey 3 cast will be appearing April 30th on The Today Show. And for that day only, they're renaming Rockefeller Plaza as Peter Parker Place.

They'll be stuff in the New York Public Library, including some of the rare original Spider-Man comics, like Amazing Fantasy 15 and Spider-Man number one. And if you're in New York for Spider Week, check out the exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History that begins on the 30th of April. While we had heard that Angel Medina will be taking over the pencils on Mighty Avengers, starting with issue number seven to allow Frank Chow a little bit of a break.

But that's not going to be the case. Instead, Brian Bendis is going to be joined by Mark Bagley, his longtime ultimate Spider-Man pal who's switching off with that title to try something different. Nothing like moving over to draw a book with a zillion guys in costumes. Again, that'll begin sometime around Mighty Avengers number seven.

Want to vote for the next president? Well, you have a chance coming before anybody else January 1st and 2nd next year. The presidential primary will take place on MySpace. The site will begin with a series of monthly straw polls next month to see where the candidates stand among the community. And then there'll be more and more hype building up to the big primary election on MySpace January 1st and 2nd next year.

Speaking of campaigns, CBS is running their own campaign for Bob Barker over on YouTube. They're inviting people to do 15 second tributes to old Bob, who's celebrating his 50th year on TV and getting ready to retire as a host of prices right after 35 years. Then they'll select five clips from the YouTube and broadcast it on a special Bob Barker special on TV the 17th of May. Showtime's big premiere of The Tudors drew some 869,000 total viewers on Sunday night

and another 400,000 for the second airing that happened at 11 o'clock. It was that network's biggest premiere night in the past three years. www.comikmix.com www.comikmix.com Well, if you haven't caught up by now, shame on you.

Of course, we're talking about the third season of Battlestar Galactica and the finale that ran a couple of weeks ago when we had our talk with Jamie Bamber, Apollo from Galactica. He reported he was very pleased with not only the third season as a whole, but especially the last episode. From my character's point of view is definitely the most interesting thing I ever shot. And my character's putting a very interesting predicament in the end there in that courtroom.

And we'll see how he comes through because until the editors show me what they've done, I don't know how quite that story spins out, but it was a lot of fun to shoot. And I had quite a lot of hand in the writing on it as well. So it's something that's interesting to me from that. Well, needless to say, we do have a long wait to find out what's next for Galactica and a lot of time to speculate.

Here's one guy's opinion. It's Matt Raub. Well, how are you doing, everybody? It's Matt Raub here once again, and I got to check out Battlestar Galactica's season three finale. Crossroads Part 2 recently. But before I go into the episode and all that jazz, let's just recap on what happened on just this season alone.

So far, the Colonials got saved from the Cylon occupation in New Caprica. Colonel Ty loses an eye and a wife. The Cylons capture the half-Cylon baby and then lose it again. We came across yet another mysterious temple that got the Colonials that much closer to finding Earth. Apollo went from being a fat guy with lots of power to a thin guy with no job.

Gaius got saved by Cylons, then tortured by Cylons, then slept with a bunch of Cylons, then arrested by the Colonials and is now on trial for treason. So big year for the Doctor, I guess. And Starbuck married Sam, then dumped Sam for Apollo, then dumped Apollo for Sam, and then died. So holy crap. Big year for us Battlestar fans, huh?

Okay, so now on to the finale. Now be warned, there are some spoilers coming this way, so if you don't want to know, just turn away. But if not, the episode was pretty much everything I wanted it to be. We finally got a look at the final four of five Cylons, discovered that Starbuck wasn't really dead just playing hide and go seek,

and realized that Bob Dylan is and has always been either a Cylon sympathizer or actually a Cylon himself. Now the episode ends with us finding out that Ty, Chief, Sam, and the President's Press Secretary, who I don't think actually has a name, are all Cylon sleeper agents drawn together by a mysterious song we later realize is a cover of Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower. Now, I both loved and hated the fact that they discovered all the Cylons at the same time. I hated it because I was hoping that they would kind of stretch it out and make it a big suspenseful thing,

and I loved it because I'm glad they didn't, you know, stretch it out and make it a big suspenseful thing. I know, I'm nuts, what can I say? But either way, we now have lots of drama to deal with for next season. So it looks like between this and an undead Starbuck, we seem to have lots of stuff fueling our rage for an entire year's long wait. But we'll see, I'm looking forward to it, boys.

Free Comic Book Day is fast approaching and you know most of the comic stores around will carry the DC and the Marvel, the Image and the Dark Horse titles. But a lot of other publishers are doing some really great stuff and we're going to continue to bring you some showcases of those. So you have plenty of time to make up your mind and go to your retailer and say, hey, I want you to get that one in because I really want to try that comic. Now, here's something from Archie, but first to tell the story, we got to go back in time a little bit to the late 1960s or the 1970s. One of the most popular Archie titles, especially among the cool comic book fans, believe it or not, was one called Little Archie.

Whose Little Archie? Well, Superboy is to Superman as to what Little Archie is to Teenage Archie. So once you get through that analogy, then work with me on the fact that this was a very, very good comic. Some of the stories were Little Archie dealing with Baby Betty and Baby Veronica and all that. But let's bypass those stories for the really good ones all done by a gentleman named Bob Bowling.

He wrote and drew the stories and the artwork was heavily shaded and really nice. And the stories themselves, when you compare them, were just as good as some of the things done by Karl Barks with the Ducks or even John Stanley and Little Lulu. Archie has brought Bowling back for a new Little Archie series coming soon and there's a free comic book day sampler on the way. Little Archie number one, The Legend of the Lost Lagoon. In this Little Archie, several campers and two counselors are boating on Loon Lake when they're suddenly caught in a dangerous storm.

A golden owl thought to be a legend directs them to the safety of a hidden tunnel that leads them to yet another legend, The Lost Lagoon. As you can tell, this is not another Jughead eats a hamburger story. It's pretty good stuff, so make sure you talk to your retailer about it. Now, I know how you feel. If you feel just a little weird buying an Archie comic, you shouldn't. Michael Silver Clyde, publisher of Archie Comics, says that in that respect, you aren't alone.

I took your microphone now and everybody in this room could hear me. Thousands of people here and I said, how many people in this room ever read an Archie comic? Everybody would raise their hand. So, you know, we hit people at a certain era and then they're growing up. But the important thing is that Archie encourages reading.

Kids come up to me and I say, what do you read? Oh, I read Hulk and I read Spider-Man and I read this and that. And he says, but you know, I also read Archie when I'm very tense and I want to relax and want to read something, I'll read one of your digest. So that makes me very happy. Again, we'll talk more about some of the really cool free comics in the days to come.

And that weekend, we're going to have a special coverage of free comic book day we'll talk about as well. ComicMix timeline April 7th, 1965. In comics this week, we were a little flabbergasted because the Teen Titans came back for a second appearance. This time bringing along somebody called Wonder Girl. We had trouble figuring that out in Brave and Bold number 60. Chemo returned in the Metal Man number 12 and 80 page giant number 11 had Superman's best fights with Lex Luthor.

The new team of Avengers got their feet wet looking for the Hulk in issue number 17. And we sadly got the last Giant Man story in Tales to Astonish number 69 and the last Human Torch story in Strange Tales number 134. Our tears though were dry because Captain Adam was back at Charlton Comics with some classic did-go reprints that would lead to a regular series and a revival. This time though it started in Strange Suspense stories number 75. In news, Soviet fighters terrorized the skies of West Berlin buzzing an American commercial airliner and firing blank shells.

And folks in Britain went on a spending spree in light of new taxes coming on cigarettes and booze. And Early Bird, the first commercial communication satellite in history, went into orbit this week. In the movies there were semi-no flowers, the comedy of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World and a little fun with Frankie Internet from Beach Blanket Bingo. Lorelai, do you know about the birds and the bees? No.

Well I better get out of here or you're going to find out. Come along now and get out of these loose clothes and slip into something tight. On TV the incredible looking Julie Newmar was on My Living Doll and if you had a name you had a show like The Richard Boone Show, The Danny Kay Show and The Kara Williams Show all on TV tonight as well as Patty Doo. Here's Johnny. If you're old enough to stay up late you got to see Johnny play hostess Suzanne Plachette and Gig Young and on the radio it was The Seekers, not The New Seekers and that silly coke song that came along a few years later on.
