Hi it's Mike Raub with the weekend broadcast. ComicMix comic book master series continues today. We got a visit from Flo and Eddie and a lot more. All that on May 5th, 2007. ComicMix News! Well it must be a pretty big rock you're living under if you don't know that today is free comic book day. Now depending upon when you're hearing this there may still be time for you to run to a local store to get some information.

And some of the great free comics. We'll be talking later on today on our end of some of the stores around the country that we put together in our ComicMix free comic book day network. That includes Midtown Comics of course in New York City. Comicopia, Shannon and the folks up in Boston Massachusetts. Going a little farther out to the Midwest for Graham Crackers Comics, the Lincoln Park store there.

Also don't forget we're going to be checking out with Heroes Aren't Hard to Find, the guys that do the Hero Convention and have a great store in Charlotte, North Carolina. In Austin, Texas, Austin Books and Games will be letting us know what's going on there. And in Glendale, Arizona the folks that brought the comics have been kind enough to work with us. Just like out in LA on Melrose Avenue, the good folks at Golden Apple will be part of the mix. Superman Dad, Superman Alive, Superman Gone Nuts. What the hell is going on? Forget about Mary Jane, forget about Spider-Man. What about Superman and Doomsday?

It is coming out the animated Superman Doomsday DVD feature that we've heard so much about. It's an online trailer right now you can check out. It is nice. It's at WarnerVideo.com slash SupermanDoomsdayDVD. Over at DC former senior editor Peter Tomasi now has an exclusive writing deal with the publisher. He'll be stepping down from his job. He's going to write monthly titles as well as other projects,

including a new mini-series featuring Black Adam called Black Adam The Dark Age, which is scheduled for late this year. I'm Casper, the Friendly Ghost. Hey Casper, you play real good. Casper is a tiny ghost and has a form of fear. He's been an icon of kids and adults too for a lot of years and everybody loves Casper the Friendly Ghost,

except for those silly scones who were in those cartoons. Dark Horse is putting together a compilation of some of Casper's very best comic book stories from Harvey. They'll cover things that run from 1957 all the way to the end of his comic book run in 1982. It'll be a trade paperback called Casper the Friendly Ghost, first of a series to 480 black and white pages. It'll be out early in the summer this year.

The Sci-Fi Channel has announced some new original series coming for the summer, some of which sound interesting, including Destination Truth. It's a one-hour show following the adventures of John Gates as he explores mysterious places and supernatural stories. The Darren Brown Project is not the final title of what this show will be, but the better hurry because it premieres on July 25th. It has British mental hero Darren Brown and episodes based on his adventures. Also, we told you about this a while ago, Flash Gordon now officially premieres August the 10th on the Sci-Fi Channel.

Coming back, of course, Ghost Hunters, new episodes of that start the 6th of June. You know Doctor Who is back season 3 finally over here. That begins officially July the 6th. Eureka season 2 starts July the 10th. And Stanleys, who wants to be a superhero, begins the second season, just in time for San Diego Comic Con, on July 25th on the Sci-Fi Channel.

Right here. Well, it had to be the next step. No pun intended. IDWN CBS Consumer Products have gone together to announce the five-year mission of the USS Enterprise in comic book form. Following on the success of IDW's Star Trek Next Generation comics, Star Trek Year 4 begins with the Enterprise Adventures, the original cast, right after where it was cancelled back in the 60s.

It'll have the art of Steve Connelly and a lot of interesting stories as well. It begins with a four-color miniseries, six issues on that, starting in July, again from IDW, and there will be variant covers as well. Star's Entertainment has three new high-def movie channels, including Star's Comedy, Star's Edge, and Star's Kids and Family. They'll be debuting on your TV by the end of the summer. Just in time for all the season finales coming here during May sweeps on the television TV Guide as something new on their website.

Let's wrap up our ComicMix Comic Book Master Series with a gentleman who's a world-renowned cartoonist, an Oscar winner, a number-one best-selling book author, and one of the biggest fans of the gold mage of comics. And because of that, he made a mark in early comics history that has not been forgotten. It was 1965, and comics were dominated by DC, closely dogged by that up-stared Marvel Comics group. Some of the publishers who were bright saw that fan reaction was beginning to the comics of two decades ago. A little thing called Comic Book Fandom was beginning, and there was some interest in this thing called the newly named Golden Age of Comics.

The idea also appealed to a regular book editor who approached the person he thought could do a wonderful history of those original old comics. That person was Jules Feiffer. I said to Dr. O, that Dr. O called me up and said, I want to do a book on the great comic book heroes, and I can't think of anybody who would be able to write it except for you. Are you interested? And I said, I'll be right over. Now, Jules was no stranger to comics. He worked alongside the great realized around the spirit back in the forties.

But a comic fan, too, and Feiffer tackled the project as any fan would, not anticipating some of the publishers might be a little difficult to deal with. They let me pick who I'd write about. There was some resistance to doing since D.C. was the key to all of this. There was some resistance to doing Willy's and the spirit. And I said, that's what the main reason I'm doing this book. And and then there was some resistance on DC's part for doing early Siegel and Schuster as opposed to the improved Superman, which I couldn't stand. And I made that clear that I was doing the book my way and not DC's way.

After that year, the great comic book heroes was extracted for an article in the all too chic Playboy magazine. And even that time, Jules had some hurdles he had to mount. Not only that, but Playboy, having its own editorial position, decided to revise my text and write in its own editorial position. So I had to scramble with them about cleaning up the manuscript and stealing it back from the editors who claimed that they were more of an authority on this than I was. Reprinted in 2003 and a trade paperback by Fanagraphic Books, it may still be available in some areas.

And if it is, grab the great comic book heroes. Still a classic. Both was a wonderful look in the Golden Age for those who'd like to know what went on before or as a nostalgic trip back into a softer past. ComicMix. ComicMix timeline. May 5th, 1967. When you hit the drugstore this week, you got a copy of Batman number 193. You paid a quarter for it, but you got an 80-page giant with a bizarre action role for Batman story.

Reprints like Ride, Bad Hombre, Ride, and the Armored Batman. In Jimmy Olsen number 103, Jimmy was a prime suspect in the murder of Clark Kent. And in Tomahawk number 111, he faced the vengeance of the Devil Dogs. What did those little cakes ever do to him? Avengers number 42 had the plan of the power.

X-Men number 34 had Tyrrannius and the Mole Man. Thor was in Daredevil 30 this week. And in Thor number 142, it was the Super Squirrel. If you're lucky enough to hit a drugstore or a grocery store that had the King comics in those little bags, you got Flash number 23 this week. From Archie, Mighty Comics presents number 48.

And believe it or not, Thunder Agents number 14. In the news, bad news for young men. The Armed Services Committee approved a four-year extension of the draft. Meanwhile, things were heating up again in Vietnam as U.S. bombers flew into a nest of MiG fighters to bomb areas close to Hanoi. And Governor George Wallace land-based and anti-war protesters who opposed the military but fight the police.

In the movies, it was glitz and grandeur on the big screen with James Minster's Hawaii. Jane Fonda was in a movie called The Game Is Over, which I don't remember. And all the ladies flocked to see Dr. Givalgo. Big Friday night, big action night for TV, that's for sure. Yet it makes some real hard choices.

Did you watch T.H.E. Cat, Wild Wild West, a ban from Uncle, or… Another challenge for the Green Hornet. His aide, Kato, and their rolling arsenal, the Black Beauty. On police records, they wanted criminals. The Green Hornet is really Brit Reid, owner publisher of the Daily Pentan

His dual identity known only to his secretary and to the district attorney. And now, to protect the rights and lives of people, citizens rides the Green Hornet. Sadly, it was the end of the last season of the show. It was soon to be over-canceled in about another three weeks. On the radio, they were flowing any to those who were hip, but to everybody else, they were called the Turtles.
