Broadcast 260. ComicMix.com. Hey, those comics you were missing, they're in this week. ComicMix.com. Hi, it's Mike Raub. Well, printing problems, distribution deals, they've all caused a little bit of a havoc in the comic bookstores this past week.
So some of the books you were looking for and us two just weren't there. We'll catch up on what's in and what's not. Coming up on… September 16th. 2008. ComicMix.muse. As you're read here on ComicMix, director DJ Caruso is plunging ahead for his film adaptation of the best-selling DC comic, Why the Last Man.
Of course, nothing so far on an actual schedule for the movie, but there is one interesting casting note. Caruso said he really wants to add Shia Labouff, who he also directed in Eagle Eye, and Disturbia to the cast of Why the Last Man. The red-hot political scene is again touching comics. This time, the guys behind the Captain Action comic are pushing for Americans to register to vote, and they're giving you a gift to do so. Voters are recommended to get to sites like rockthevote.org and register to vote, providing you're a new voter as soon as possible.
Now, the deadlines may vary by state, so you need to check that in your local area. Once you register, forward a copy of your confirmation to takeactiongetactionatlive.com, and the guys at Moonstone will then send you a digital download of the first issue, which is sold out by the way of Captain Action. You'd think he's busy enough. Geoff Johns, who's pretty much reinventing Green Lantern and Superman for DC, and keeping the lights on for the Justice Society as well, is now going to be brought on to write part of the saga of the DC Universe online. It's the massive multiplayer action game coming not far from now from Sony Entertainment. By the way, it's the first time that Johns has ever teamed up with legendary comic artist Jim Lee, who's been involved in the project from the beginning.
When it does come out, you can play the DC Universe game on your PlayStation 3 and your computer as well. No release date yet, though. Hi, this is Darwyn Cooke, and you're listening to ComicMix. ComicMix Radio. What's coming out this is This Week.
Part of the bat, we need to explain a little something. It looks like over the past couple of weeks, there have been some printing and shipping problems with a few titles from both Marvel and DC. So some of the books we talk about may have been in your area a week ago. Some may not be there until next week. Just be sure to check with your retailer to get the very latest information.
Terry Moore's Controversial Echo series continues with issue number six this week from Big City Comics. There's totem number eight. A couple of Biggies from Dark Horse, Conan to Samaria number three, and Indiana Jones and the Tomb of the Gods number two. And then over to DC for Action Comics number 869, which we kind of expected last week. Now we'll ship this week.
There's air number two and then our first best bet. It's cool! A lot of folks like it. A lot of people don't. Those that like it, though, are very vocal.
So that means if you haven't seen the book over the past 12 issues or so, you may want to check out All Star Superman hitting issue number 12 this week. If you enjoy it, there's a great collection of early issues available. Also this week from DC, Batgirl number three in a six-issue run. There's Batman and the Outsiders number 11, which is part of the Batman R.I.P. storyline. For the All Ages group, there's Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam issue number two, finally.
There's Birds of Prey number 122, Brave and Bold number 17. Also this week, Casey Blue Beyond tomorrow number five in that six-issue run. Checkmate hits number 30. There's the DC Special Cyborg number five in that six-issue Titans tie-in miniseries. DC Universe Decisions appears this week, again a week late.
It's a first issue and a four-issue run. The DC Wildstorm Dream War winds up at issue number six. There's Family Dynamic number two in a three-issue run. We get Flesh number 244 this week. We also get Greatest Hits number one, which also has a variant edition as well.
Check with your retailer. That runs a full six issues in that miniseries. There's Hellblazer number 247, The Rann/Thanagar, The Holy War number five, and that eight-issue series. We get Robin number 178, Scalp number 21, Mark Evanier and Sergio again on Spirit with issue number 21.
We get Stormwatch PhD number 14. The Superman Kryptonite hardcover this week deserves a look through, that's for sure. There's also the Tangent Superman's reign number seven, that's a 12-issue run. Again to the All Ages group for Tiny Titans number eight, and for the big people, there's Titans number five. Of course, Trinity again this week.
This is issue number 16 and winding up for DC World of Warcraft number 11. We move right down the list to image this week for Astounding Wolfman number eight, another great Robert Kirkman classic. Broken Trinity comes in with issue number two, a couple of different covers for that one. Check on those. Dead Space winds up with issue number six in that six-issue run.
There's a Devoid of Life graphic novel, Sword number 11, Walking Dead number 52, and then our next best bet. It's cool. Marc Malar's War Heroes certainly was a huge sellout for issue number one. I expect the same for issue number two and it sure deserves a look through.
Also, there's a whole bunch of different variants as well for War Heroes number two. Over to Marvel and we kick it off with the best bet. It's cool. Age of Century number one. Again, a comic that is sort of a left turn for some of the things going on in Marvel these days.
It'll be a six-issue run. We'll see where it goes. Good chance to jump on here with the first issue and there's a variant to this one as well. Also this week we get Captain Britain and the MI-13 number five, which has a muggy variant. A new printing of the Essential Iron Man.
Some great stories there for your collection. And the Essential Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe trade paperback. This is volume three in that run. We get Fool Killer White Angels number three. That's five issues there.
We get a whole bunch of different tribute books to Gene Colan with different covers as well, including one dedicated to Dracula, Iron Man, and Marvel Monsters as well. All giving a tribute to one of the greats of Marvel Comics, Gene Colan. More from Marvel includes Ghost Rider number 27, Guardians of the Galaxy number five, which is a secret invasion tie-in and has a muggy variant.
The Incredible Hercules number 121 this week. It also has a muggy variant as well. More secret invasion tie-ins and Iron Man director of Shield number 33. For the all ages group, Marvel Adventures Avengers number 28. Again, one of the best books from any age groups of Marvel.
Also Marvel Adventures two and one number 15. Speaking of apes and monkeys, Marvel Apes number two in the four issue run comes out this week. And there's a non-monkey variant to that one as well, if you can grab it. There's Moon Knight number 22, the power pack day one stories collected in a digest trade paperback style. This week, we get Punisher number 62 and a couple of weeks ago, we got secret invasion number six.
Now the various variants to those are in this week. So if you do one of those, I want to try and pick one up, be aware they're coming into the stores this week. There's also secret invasion Thor number two, that'll be three issues when it goes. Skrulls versus power pack number three, that's a four issue run. Squadron Supreme two, number three this week, which has a monkey variant.
There's true believers number three in a five issue run. And then to the X books, X factor number 35, which also has a monkey variant this week. There's X-Men first class volume two, number 16 and young X-Men number six, which is part of the manifest destiny tie in series. And there's a monkey variant to that one as well from Marvel. The non blockbusters of the summer are starting to hit the DVD stores this week.
We get Al Pacino's 88 minutes. Speed Racer is on DVD and a couple of different versions, as well as Mike Myers, the love guru and Patrick Dempsey's the maid of honor. Also the documentary young at heart this week hits DVD. Then we move over to the repackages and the special editions and boy, there's a number of them. New versions are out this week of Beetlejuice, Risky Business, the Breakfast Club as well, 16 candles and weird science.
And then available on Blu-ray for the first time this week. There's Stephen King's The Mist, 1408, Pirates of the Caribbean, The very first one and Blood Simple. TV on DVD this week has a huge list as we expected. There's Chuck season one, another series that deserves a look through if you can. Pushing Daisy's season one, same goes there.
Season eight of Will and Grace is on DVD this week. And then we move over to the practice, finally coming along to DVD with season one. There's also Criminal Minds season three, Dirty Sexy Money season one, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. What a classic there, great material from days gone by, the late 60s or early 70s. Season three of The Smothers Brothers is available.
And then our pick of the week, of course, it's season two of Torchwood packed with great episodes and a lot of nice features as well. This week available from the BBC. Make us your home page. ComicMix timeline, September 16th, 1967. You could spot those go-go checks a mile away from the drugstore.
Well, maybe at least a few feet away from the spinning rack. It is easy for us to grab our DC's this week, which included Batman number 196. Second issue of Bomba the Jungle Boy from DC. We also got flash number 174. Inferior five was rolled along with issue number five.
An interesting story called Man Thy Name is Brother. Pretty offbeat in Justice League number 57 this week. There was a plastic man number seven, showcase number 71, which had the maniacs and Woody Allen, believe it or not. And the first issue of the Spectre drawn by Murphy Anderson. Spitted around for the Marvels this week, which had Fantastic Four number 69 with the thing betraying the Fantastic Four again.
There was Spider-Man number 55, Avengers number 46. And a bunch of stories that were less than three years old, all collected for a quarter in Marvel Collectors items. Classic number 12. And from Charlton this week, got the second issue of Hercules and Judo Master number 98 with work by Frank McLaughlin, who you know, from White Viper right here at ComicMix. 1967.
In the news, a two-day running battle in the Mekong Delta ended, leaving heavy losses with US Naval Forces. Killer Hurricane Bula bore down on the coast of Mexico and talks resumed in the New York City's teacher strike. In the movies, there was Up the Down Staircase, The Guide for the Married Man, Four for Texas, and The Beautiful of the Time, Jane Fonda in Barefoot in the Park. TV Tonight had episodes of Jackie Gleason, The Dating Game, Get Smart, and the premiere of Manics. We should also note there was a special that aired this evening featuring our link letter guest starring Groucho Marx and featuring a heavy segment on LSD.
On a radio, a group that was part of one of the strangest stories of the 60s, originally they were produced in a studio, which meant they didn't have a face to go out on tour. Even stranger was that the song we're about to play was originally released by a band called the Rare Breed last year. It was note for note the exact same song. However, the record company decided to fire that group, rename the group, The Ohio Express, and release it under the new name. Now they needed a group. Where did it come from? Well, they picked up a local Mansfield, Ohio bar band known as Sir Timothy and the Royals and renamed them The Ohio Express. And if that wasn't confusing enough, listen to how they ripped off the riffs from Louie Louie for a song called Big Bar We're Steel from The Ohio Express.
The Ohio Express. Back in a couple of days with a few things on our plate to get off, including a look at where heroes will begin when it premieres season three, Monday night on NBC. We talked to some of the folks involved in the cast about what we can expect from their perspective and you can put it all together yourself. And another new show that has some leanings toward the fantasy world is Samurai Girl on ABC Family. And we talked to the stars involved with that to give you an overview of what you might be missing.
