Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to The Point, where all parts of pop culture come together. So here's the deal. You dump a bunch of your buddies and you get a free whopper. We're going to tell you how.
It's like we'll tell you about the five cool things of the comic stores this week and how you can hook up with the Stars of Heroes and a lot more all on Twitter. It's Monday, January 12, 2009, and we get to The Point right now. This is The Point, The Point radio, get The Point radio. It's up to you, New York, New York.
New York Comic Con 2009, just 25 days away. Can you believe it? Time to get serious about it. The Point will be there, will be stationed broadcast and ready to roll in Podcast Alley. Look for us on the show floor.
However, there's a lot more to look for as well. You know, this year's shows a little earlier than usual. But no matter what the weather in New York City is like outside, it's going to be great inside with a bigger light up of guests than ever before. Lots of special events too surrounding upcoming movie and TV shows that tie into comics and
pop culture. And one of the biggest is the premiere of the direct to DVD Wonder Woman feature. It's not polite to hit a lady. In guest of honor, Bruce Timm will be hosting a premiere showing of the Wonder Woman feature followed by a panel discussion featuring himself and members of the cast and the crew.
It takes place at the Comic Con Friday the 6th of February. It'll be at 8.30pm, which is in the IGN Theater, part of the Jacob Javits Center. The Point, radio. It's Monday January 12th. Here's some of the things we're talking about in pop culture today. A little glimmer of positive news from the Watchmen Fight attorneys on Friday said that they're actually having fruitful settlement talks and they asked a federal judge to postpone
the hearing. However, the trial is still set for January 20th. Hopefully between now and then there might be some good news, which means we will get to see Watchmen hopefully as scheduled on March the 6th. And the Golden Globe goes to Heath Ledger of the Dark Knight.
Big news in the Golden Globes in our world last night of course was Heath Ledger winning the Best Supporting Actor for Dark Knight. Now it's on to the Oscars. What will happen there? Well, a lot of people say the same thing is more than likely.
I'm looking forward though to see maybe a Dark Knight denomination for Best Picture, maybe even a winner as well. That would break a bold. Oscar nominations by the way are a little later this year than they usually are. They'll be announced on the 22nd because that's a busy week with the inauguration
coming up on Tuesday the 20th and the ceremony for the Oscars live on Sunday night, February 22nd. News from the CES that Web Cars is teaming up with our old ComicMix buddy, cartoonist Kyle Baker to develop a comic book series based on their signature Web Cars world. Now it's an isometric playground populated by original cars but the cool thing is that
kids create these cars on their own. Come on, you know when you were a kid you used to love to grow cars. Kyle is of course world recognized. He's won eight Eisner Awards. He's won a whole bunch of other awards including the Best Artist for the Baker's series in
2007. And just like every other project that Kyle begins, he says when he picks up a pencil on this one, everything's got to be different right from the start. If your job is to design a ketchup bottle for example, you want to be creative as possible but you have to be creative up to a point.
It still has to be bottle shaped. It has to be red. If you start making a blue box, that's very creative but no one's going to know it's a ketchup bottle and they're not going to buy it. So if I'm doing a mad magazine job, it should look like a mad magazine job.
But if I'm doing something like Matt Turner which is a very depressing historical story about slavery and that's drawn in a more, you know, I don't want to say photographic but like everybody's anatomically proportional and things like that. They don't have giant heads and big floppy things like that. I would imagine there would be more news including an announcement about the first issue with
web cars coming probably close to San Diego Comic Con. Internet rumor now is fact as Golden Globe winner Mickey Rourke will be part of Iron Man 2 as playing the Crimson Dynamo. Sam Rockwell has joined the cast as well. He'll be playing Justin Hammer.
Of course Iron Man 2 is still set to be released in May 2010. Meanwhile Disney assigned Mick Gee to direct their revival of 2000 Leagues Under the Sea, the new picture called 2000 Leagues Under the Sea Captain Nemo. Did you know that the very first 2000 Leagues Under the Sea released in 1954 was directed by Richard Fleischer and it was Disney's very first live action movie.
Call it another casualty of the economic crunch but Wizard Entertainment has canceled the shows in LA and Texas this year. Wizard World LA was scheduled for March 13th to the 15th in the Wizard World Texas show. It was scheduled a lot later in the year around November of 2009. There will be shows as planned in Philadelphia and Chicago as well.
Get more information at WizardUniverse.com. Marvel fans have had 25 years and a lot of therapy to forget the Assistant Editors Month which took place back in 1984. Highlight of that of course was the David Letterman guest shot appearing at Avengers. Now they're doing it all over again on a little smaller scale than April.
Look for Marvel Assistant-sized Spectacular number 1 and 2 featuring stories allegedly by the Assistant Editors. More details on what to expect coming in the next few weeks or you may just want to avoid it and be shocked and surprised in April. Speaking of Egonomics, nothing beats that better than free comics.
Boom Studios is offering free copies of Hex number 1 to retailers who will hopefully be smart enough to pass those on to you as well. It's all part of the program that also involves Hex number 1 being on MySpace free online this week just like they did with Northwind back in 2008. Meanwhile Asylum Press still has that deal going on where they're more than happy to
send you three free comic books. They originally had this scheduled for just December. Now they're extending it through the 31st of January as well. To get your free Asylum comic books you can get more information by writing them at AsylumPress.AOL.com. You may have already heard that Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been cast as Thompson
and Thompson the Bubbling Detectives in the new Peter Jackson Steven Spielberg revival of Tin Tin on the big screen. However here's another Simon Pegg story you may not have heard. He is asking fans not to buy the US region 1 DVD of his movie How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.
It's not a marketing gimmick. It's really true. You can check it out on his website and his MySpace page as well. He's asking people not to buy it because the US release of the DVD does not have the audio commentaries, the gag reel, video diaries and other extra material.
They are available on the British version though but you have to have the correct DVD player to be able to see that here. Pegg said he and his partners worked very hard to get the DVD to be packed with bonus material they were promised it would be for US fans. And now since it isn't, well he doesn't think you should spend your money.
The boys, the boys, here's what's cool. I don't know about you but the big winter blues has me screaming to be entertained and I'm ready for Wednesday to come to head down to the comic shop. When you and I do here are five things we'll find this week that we think are pretty cool. About Faces of Evil which debuted last week actually started out a little interesting
which is more than you can say even at this point for Final Crisis. So if you decide to plunk down a whole bunch of money this week there's a number of Faces of Evil tie-ins to pick up that include Action Comics number 873, Booster Gold number 16, Green Arrow Black Canary number 16 as well. There's Green Lantern Corps number 32, Nightwing number 152 and Titans number 9.
All different Faces of Evil tie-ins as well as the single book Faces of Evil Prometheus number 1. Also cool this week the second issue of Eric Schanauer's Marvel series Wonderful Wizard of Oz number 2. That will be eight issues when it completes.
And one of the things we always find fun and I love the pointed out every chance I get is alter ego from two morrows. The hard working Roy Thomas putting out issue number 83 this week. It's worth a look through lots of cool comic stuff in there. Also a company that deserves a nod is Moonstone keeping alive one of the greatest comic characters
of all time. That will be The Phantom and this week there's The Phantom Annual number 2 that deserves a little bit of your attention from them. And of course big news book this week and the one everybody will be trying to grab will be Amazing Spider-Man number 583 with President-elect Barack Obama included in that one and the much
sought after Amazing Spider-Man number 583 Obama variant and probably will be pretty tough to get. Speaking of other hard stuff to find this week there's Exyn Furnace at number 1, a second printing variant on that one. And if you're following a dark rain from Marvel your tie-in this week is Deadpool number 6.
The point radio. Kansas are you or somebody you know is involved with Twitter. You probably do it just like they do to keep up with your friends and make snarky comments about some of the great and exciting things that are happening in your lives. It's also interesting to find a number of celebrities that are on Twitter just like
on myspace and Facebook though a lot of them end up being fake or just part of some PR machine that has nothing to do with a real celebrity. Well now there's an answer to that it's a website called CelebWitter.com. It is easy to find and it rounds up the very best celebrity Twitter feeds and the guys that put the website together guarantee that these are the real people not a publicity
machine and not some fake whacked out fan imitating the celebrity to begin with. There's about 75 celebrities on there right now more added every day you can find people from comedian Steven Fry, hero star Greg Grundberg, the beautiful Bria Grant also from heroes and a lot more and again the website guarantees that these are pretty much mostly the real people.

Twitter you're also on Facebook too maybe you joined Facebook well a while ago year or two in the past and now you look at your friends list and you wonder who some of these people are. It's January 12, 2009 and let's start the week with just a short trip back. After a 50 year wait Vernon Black was awarded the World War II Medal of Honor now Black was the first living black man to receive that honor in history. A leak in the Boulder Colorado coroner's office led to the tabloid publication of Jabba D. Ramsey's autopsy photos and entertainer Frank Sinatra was rushed to the hospital
after suffering a heart attack. In the movies at the bottom of the list the relic and Evita the first Scream movie was out this week. There were cliches of plenty in Jerry McGuire and MTV's Beavis and Fuddhead to America and then the big date movie for the weekend George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer.
And on TV there were episodes of Third Rock from the Sun, Men Behaving Badly, 87th Precinct, there was The X-Files, a special TV movie with Paul Abdullacal, Touched by Evil and the 1997 People's Choice Awards. Best comedy went to Seinfeld, best dramatic movie was Independence Day and the People's Choice for the favored daytime drama was Days of Our Lives.
On the radio one of the more interesting personalities of the 90's starting as a DJ in Australia she soon moved into recording her own material. Not long after that she was red hot all over Europe and by the time she got to the US her first album was big partly because she was on the front cover drenched completely in chocolate.
Her name is Gina G and ooh ah just a little bit. Alright hang on next stop coming up. On this January day the Vietnam War heated up to the highest level it had been in three months when communist forces attacked a US Air Force base for the third time in two weeks. President Nixon ordered pay increases for some 18,000 blue collar workers and two Toronto
teens made a grisly discovery after watching a TV movie where a crook stashed a murder victim in a freezer. They then discovered a real one of their own and then abandoned appliance in their basement and body was identified as a missing wife of one of their roommates. While they had tough guys in the movies this week, Gene Hackman and Chris Kristofferson
were in Cisco Pike, Clint was in Dirty Harry, there was a little bit lighter fare in the gang that couldn't shoot straight and classic Bond with Sean Connery. On TV tonight we got a dose of a little love of the courtship of Eddie's father and a lot of action from shows like Adam 12, Primus of the Persuaders and Dennis Weaver in McCloud. If you're going to be mentored by somebody in the music business it probably doesn't
come any better than the Beatles. The band was called the Ivy's and the Fab Four was so fascinated with them that Paul McCartney gave him a chance to record a song he wrote for the soundtrack of the movie The Magic Christian. However the band needed a name change, the Ivy's just didn't seem to fit in with what
was happening. John suggested a couple of different things which included the pricks, the cagneys and the glass onion but it was a staff member from Apple Records who actually made the right choice. It was a reference to with a little help from my friends and the Bad Finger Boogie was shortened
just to Bad Finger. On the charts again this year with Day After Day. I remember finding out about you. Every day my mind is all around you. Looking out from my lonely room Day after day.
