Hello, it's Mike Raub and welcome to The Point where all parts of pop culture come together. And this weekend they come together in one place, that's the Big Apple. It's New York Comic Con 2009 with guests galore, exclusive goodies to grab and quite frankly a little bit of a crowd as well. Stop shopping, all right?
It's Friday, February 6, 2009. We get to The Point right now. This is The Point, The Point Radio, get The Point Radio. It's a big weekend in New York but it's also a big weekend for director Kyle Newman. Fanboys opens in theaters around the country.
Hopefully there's some decent crowds even though there's some heavy competition in the movie theaters. We're going to be there for a number of different reasons and I think you should be too. One of the things you'll enjoy most about the movie is the huge amount of really cool cameos that are there.
A tough situation to coordinate for Kyle, that's for sure. It was kind of a tough situation to figure it out but I think you got it right. Once one person jumped on it was kind of like they just started flowing. We got Carrot Fish here and then we got William Shatner and Ray Parker had already been involved with us friends of them prior.
So it helped, there were Star Wars personalities already in the film and then Billy Dee came on and that's when Billy Dee felt like they were a perceived carrion. It was kind of like a, it just kind of started growing. And you know guys like Kevin Smith obviously, we were working on one of the classic films with Scott Moser who's Kevin's producing partner and editor.
So Kevin was familiar with the project and thought it was kind of cool and Kevin actually wrote his own little scene and while we were doing the road shooting with the additional photography our first time, Kevin came down and we had to do his little scene. So it was fun and then he brought Jason Muse and it was awesome. One of the stars of Fanboys is Kristen Bell.
You know her from Heroes and from Veronica Mars. Kristen of course a long time fan herself gave a lot for the movie including something involving a princess layout. Kristen was so great and I'm so glad it worked out with Kristen because I knew Kristen before we were making a film and before we started casting it and I was like oh my god it has
to be Kristen because she's just smart, she's sassy, she's sexy, she's got like the right energy and she's a nerd lover and she also honestly is into all this stuff too. It was just a perfect fit. I couldn't think of anything else but I wasn't going to work out with her show Veronica Mars. So I was actually casting it to try and find somebody else and I met a lot of great people
but ultimately once you have something in your head you set on it, I knew somehow it worked out with Kristen and then we stayed patient and didn't make any decisions and at the last minute we worked it out with her schedule and it made our shoot a lot harder production wise because she was flying in and out and doing her show and only giving us two days a week.
She was working seven days a week but it was the best thing for the movie. It made our lives harder and more difficult but I think the end product, I'm so glad she's in it and like you said the slave costume she was all game for. She was like bring it on bitch. So it was awesome.
Bandboys opens in theaters around the country this weekend. Get some friends together and see it. You will enjoy it. It's Friday February 6, 2009. Here's what we're talking about in pop culture here in New York and just about everywhere
this weekend. Well if you're waiting in line for something to do, grab your iPhone and download the soundtrack to the animated movie Coraline. You can do that wherever you are. It is now available this weekend on iTunes.
Of course it will be available in stores on February 24th and the Neil Gaiman book adopted to a movie will open in theaters today. Meanwhile Warner Brothers and Joel Silver have named John Stevenson, the guy who co-directed Kung Fu Panda, to direct the live action adaptation of Mattel's Masters of the Universe. It's on the way.
It's the first time Stevenson has done a live action feature. And in other news, Dan Messier is said to be Warner Brothers pick for the guy to write the movie adaptation of The Flash. In case you missed any of it, TNT is going to air the encore run of Star Wars the Clone Wars in high-definition starting on Valentine's Day at 11 p.m. with back-to-back episodes
following their NBA All-Star Saturday night. And then the series goes into its regular time period of Wednesdays at 10 o'clock and will continue every week with double episodes of the 22-episode run. Here's an interesting note to follow away for a future date. Luminous Animation Studios, an indie film production and distribution company, has begun
work on an original family-aimed animated movie called The Legend of Santa Claus. It's the first in a planned movie trilogy and it's set for a theatrical release in fall 2010. It's directed by Colin Brady. He's the guy who was involved in Limonese Knickets, E.T., Hulk and so many other films.
And a screenplay is by Tabb Bertha, who did the screenplay for Disney's Brother Bear, Hunchback of Notre Dame and Tarzan, among others. The story talks about Nicholas, a young boy who lives in an 18th-century fishing village who finds himself in a struggle between good and evil and eventually becomes a hero. Our friends at IDW have announced the release of the Bloom County Library.
This is big. It begins in October of this year with five volumes to collect nearly two years worth of daily and Sunday strips in chronological order in each volume. You know, it's the first time a lot of these have been collected, the first time in a combination like this.
It's all going to be done as part of IDW's Library of American Comics, designed by, of course, our old buddy Dean Malaney. And if you haven't seen Dean's amazing work, check out IDW's Dick Tracy hardcover, which is in comic stores this week. Okay, now there's a new official start date for the second season of Reaper on the CW
network. That date is now March the 3rd. Episodes begin at 8 p.m. that night and CW says they're going to run all 13 original episodes of season number two through the 26th of May. And their press release says that that is the day of the season finale.
Not series finale, season finale. Take that for whatever it's worth, but hopefully it means the third season of Reaper is not that far away. One of the big pieces of anime news, a lot of people here at the show are talking about is the release of the Death Note 2, the last name from Viz.
The Japanese live action film is going to be now officially on DVD, done beautifully, of course, with the original Japanese dialogue, English subtitles, and an English dub version as well. Lots of special features like the making of Death Note, the original Japanese theatrical trailer, and a lot more.
It hits DVD racks coming up on the 10th, not that far from right now. But in the meantime, there's some real interesting online contests you can get involved with. Note 2 poster. Got to do that though before the 28th of February. If you're a fan of Shonen Jump magazine, which hit comic stores this week, there's an exclusive contest there that gives 10 lucky fans a chance to win a copy of the DVD. And three of those fans to win an autographed copy as well.
Again, that issue of Shonen Jump magazine is in comic stores right now. Good point, baby girls. I've been enjoying Smallville ever since they made it the launch pad for a version of the DC universe that makes sense and is actually interesting. And while lately Superboys come off as self-righteously wimpy, it's clear that's just a face he's
going through until he earns his big red S. One other thing is clear. After three, maybe four remarkably crappy Superman movies, the last starring a kid with no discernible appeal, the clueless bean counters at Warner Brothers are making a big mistake by not carrying the TV cast over to the big screen.
For one thing, I doubt there's ever been a better Lois Lane than Erika Duran's. Her character is clever, intelligent, aggressive, and human. Most of her predecessors had but one of those attributes. For another, Michael Rosenbaum's Lex Luthor is the perfect screen villain. Credible, possessed, yet subtle, and evil.
His motivations have been established one at a time. He made the decision to become what he has become. Plus, he's got a father complex to beat the band. And of course, the kid in the t-shirt deserves the cape. In 2009, his is the face of a man of steel.
But more important, we have eight years invested in this approach. More people who are likely to go to the movies have seen it than any other. Few shows last anywhere near as long, particularly on a bargain basement network like The CW. I don't think another big screen makeover has a chance. The audience has been through it too many times.

Air movie ticker got you in this week to see a great performance from Nick Noldy in Down and Out in Beverly Hills. There was also The Color Purple, Murphy's Romance, Iron Eagle, FX, and one of the better sequels of the 80s, Tool of the Nile that had to have a Billy Ocean soundtrack. When it was Sunday, that means on TV there were episodes of Silver Spoons, Murder She
Wrote, 60 Minutes, the Disney Sunday movie, but at the beginning of the night on NBC, it was Puggie Brewster. Time Machine. On the radio was a guy known more for comedy than for music, but actually music was his first love.
In the early 80s, he did background vocals for a number of smaller groups, including the Busboys, and even his very first comedy album back in 1982 had some parody songs on it as well. However, this year he teamed up with superstar producer Rick James to finally put his own mark in the music world.
If you listen closely, though, you'll hear some homages to some of his favorite artists, including Elvis and Michael Jackson. It's all Eddie Murphy all the time, no imitations here, and a hit song called Party All the Time. All right, we press another button and we're back to the bicentennial.
Death tolls in the Guatemalan earthquake rose to a staggering 15,000 at this point. Oklahoma Senator Lloyd Benson dropped his bid for the 1976 presidential election and a DC six passenger plane crashed in LA with only three surviving passengers. In the movies, there was a Jack doing his very best and one flew over the Cuckoo's nest, the man who would be king, Disney's No Deposit, No Return, George Burns and the Sunshine Void,
the lord of Flatbush, and Goldie and Warren Beatty in Shampoo, a movie with an eclectic soundtrack of all sorts of artists, including Buffalo Springview. TV tonight entertained us with episodes of Rhoda and On the Rocks. CBS also had Phyllis and Chad Everett in Medical Center. Over on ABC, it was top of the ratings for the sweeping miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man.
On the radio, a band that began in the late 1960s under the name of the Sweet Shop. It was only one of a lot of changes that experienced throughout that decade, the 70s and even into the 80s as well. And hits periodically in the US and the UK all during that time, but this was their biggest album, Desolation Boulevard.
