Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to The Point, where all parts of pop culture come together. We're on our way to the Big Apple for Toy Fair 2009, but in the meantime, we go behind the scenes at NBC's Chuck, let you know how you can expand your horizons at the comic store this week, and Mike Gold explains how Caprica is a big risk. It's Monday, February 16, 2009, and we get to The Point right now.
This is The Point, The Point radio, get The Point radio. You might call it the little show that could. For almost two seasons, Chuck has been steadily delivering solid stories while building an audience on television just to sturdy. There's a man who leads a life of danger. So far in 2009, the show has drawn some extra attention from a 3D episode as promoted heavily
at the Super Bowl. As you can guess, producing an hour-long show that way wasn't easy, as co-creator and producer Josh Schwartz explains. So how did this all come about? Josh, along with his partner Chris Fiedak, fills us in. As both creators and producers, Josh and Chris are heavily involved in Chuck, a show that garners a lot of fan attention on the web. So how much of the commentary out there
do they follow? Being a masochist, you only find the negative thing, and that's what you read. Yeah, we read everything. That's who the show is for, and you can get a lot of good constructive stuff. You can go too far, you can allow every note to be created, but sometimes you're like, oh, that ought to be the show back.
Chuck is part of what I like to call Too Much TV Mondays, where not even three DVRs can keep up with everything I want to record. We think you should move into the top of your queue, catch it at 8 o'clock tonight and every Monday on NBC. It's Monday, February 16, 2009. Here's what we're talking about at Buff Culture this week. Well, Marvel has decided to prove me wrong when I said the other day by selling out more
comics. Here's a couple more to add to the list. Chigared Warriors number one has a sold out. There'll be a second printing variant with a different cover in stores right around the middle of the month. And War of Kings Dark Hawk number one. There are two issues in that run. First one is sold out, second printing variant in stores around the 18th with an extra special cover by Brandon Peterson.
Not sure how I feel about this one, and I'll tell you why ABC has greenlit a US version of the British superhero comedy, No Heroics. If you've caught 80s episodes on the internet and there's a bunch out there, you know that the series takes place on a world where superheroes are common and they pretty much have their own class system. Now, like all British television, it's a little bit above what we expect here, at least as far as regular network TV. It's
a little adult, as to say the least, language and situations. And it kind of makes me wonder how ABC is going to homogenize this one. We'll see, I guess, in a few months. No production dates have been announced yet. Artist Ben Tumblesmith along with Leah Moore are tackling their very first Doctor Who project. It's a one shot from IDW called Doctor Who The Whispering Gallery. It involves Doctor and Martha in a world where there's a maze like
gallery filled with thousands of talking pictures. Leah Moore said the story came to her while she was sleeping one night as part of a dream. But the one shot is reality. It'll be in stores from IDW at the end of the month. Rescue Me finally returns to FX with season number five, 22 episodes. It'll begin on April the 7th. And there's also a new season planned after that. FX is renewed to season six, which is good news. Hopefully
it won't take as long to get on the air. In the meantime, Dennis Leary has formed the Rescue Me comedy tour. It's an 11-city live comedy show featuring Leary, other comedians, and from the show Adam Ferrera and Lenny Clark as well. It begins at April 2nd at New York City's Radio City Music Hall. past Valentine's Day and a little too late for this gift, but you may find use for it. Miss 60, the Italian apparel company, is teamed up with King Features to create a limited edition set of clothing based on olive oil. Classic cartoon character will be on three eighties inspired cotton t-shirts from the 60. They're being launched worldwide this week. And speaking of this week, it's Toy Fair 2009 in New York City. Lots of things
to look for there. Some of the more interesting things we've heard about so far include a line of the Star Wars three and three quarter inch Clone War basic figures. This is a complete set that'll be available in the fall. It features all the characters from the show and lots of cool accessories as well. And lots of Transformers material too, based on both the animated series and the upcoming movie with lots of new characters and redone versions

Oh no, I don't believe it. You say that you think he knows the meaning of love. Just as Battlestar Galactica reaches its hot and heavy finish comes a word that Caprica, the pilot for the prequel series, will be released on DVD April 21st, about a year before it airs on the Sci-Fi channel. That's a first. It's also a risk. It'll be the hardcore who will buy it first and they are the hardest to please. So fans dislike it, word of mouth
could eviscerate their potential audience. If they have to make cash changes, it'll look blue. I admit I don't like prequels. Some of the suspense is missing. You know where the story is heading if not the individual characters. I prefer to boldly go where we haven't gone before.
A universal subscription of Caprica is less than enticing. They say, quote, Caprica follows two rival families as they compete and thrive in the vibrant world of the twelve colonies. Emeshed in the burgeoning technology of artificial intelligence and robotics that will eventually lead to the creation of the Cylons, the two houses go toe to toe blending in action with corporate conspiracy and sexual politics, end quote. Oh, that again.
But there's two reasons I'm going to check this out. First, the cast, particularly Isai Morales as the father of Admiral Adama and Polly Walker as well, a nun. Morales was the third boss on NYPD Blue. Walker played Octavius' mother, the villainous Adia, on Rome. Both are worth watching. Second, I was ruling about Galactica. I thought the idea of resurrecting one of the stupidest
TV shows of the seventies was carrying a bad idea too far. After urging from friends, I checked it out and became one of my favorites. The same folks are responsible for Caprica and I appreciate getting this advanced look. This is Weird Scenes Inside the Gold Mine. I'm Mike Gold, on the phone. As we put our list together of the five cool things of the comic stores, it is sort of
an expand your horizon week here with some interesting things from not necessarily the usual sources. We started out with Death Defying Devil Number Three, part of the project's Superheroes ongoing series from Dynamic Forces. Again, of the Niffert series, this probably is the better one. It involves the Golden Age Daredevil, renamed for obvious legal reasons, but still a good story. Invincible, you've heard a lot about it. You may have thought
of picking it up a number of different times. There's been a whole bunch of different jumping on points and you might as well just dive in to see what's going on because it is a great book. Invincible Number 59, This Week from Image. From The Dark Rain Run at Marvel, one of the better ones this week, Dark Avengers Number Two, a lot of controversy about the first issue. Find out what's going on in the second one here. Our friends at AC Comics
continually produce some wonderful reproduction of Golden Age material. So if you'd like to find out what people talk about in the good old days, well you can find it in any issue of Metamissory. This week there's a real good one, issue number 77 from AC. Finally, it premiered at New York Com last week and now it's in your hands as well. The official movie adaptation of The Warriors done pretty much shot for shot. Those will later on move into
a regular series as well. This part though is a five issue run and you get issue number one this week. From DC, your Omens at Origins title this week include Birds of Prey number 127, Justice League of America number 30, Outsiders number 15, Robin number 183, and Supergirl number 38. And then there's a whole list of hard stuff, all the second printings and variants that you may be searching out. Freelander number 36 has a second printing
variant this week from DC. Devil's Do, there's a couple of different versions of the book Zombies that Ate the World number one. From Dynamic Forces there's a couple of different variants to Black Terror number one, part of the Project Superhero series we talked about earlier. And then from Marvel, get ready for this list. A second printing variant this week include Invincible Iron Man number nine, War Machine number one, Wolverine number 70,
Thunderbolts number 128, Ultimate Wolverine versus Hulk number two, and X-Men Noir number two, all second printing variants from Marvel. It's February 16th 2009 as we step back into the 80s. A Colombian cargo jet carrying 2500 pounds of cocaine hidden among Valentine's flowers was seized by US drug officials and the country said goodbye to the 20 cent postage stamp. The cost this week went to 22 cents. Convicted kidnapper Glenn Wright was given
three consecutive life sentences in prison all for the kidnapping of the wife of a pharmaceutical mogul here in the US. However, due to federal law, Wright would then become eligible for parole in just 10 years. In the movie theaters there was Witness, Eddie Murphy and Beverly Hills Cop. The Nightmare on Elm Street run began right here. There were The Killing Fields and A Little Movie with a great soundtrack. On the screen Matthew Modine and Linda Florentino
and in the speakers it was Madonna in Vision Quest. TV Tonight, well the theme was a holdover to the 70s but the show is still at the top of the ratings for William Shatner and cast in TJ Hooker. Also tonight episodes of Different Strokes give me a break. Love Boat teamed up with another ABC short-lived show The Finder of Lost Loves and over on NBC It's Your Move. On the radio a British pop band formed in 1981 and went right to the charts here in the US just
last year with a song called Wake Me Up Before You Go Go. The group was very hot in England rivaling the top of the charts with Duran Duran and the Culture Club and over here this particular song was a showcase for one member of the group who would later break out on his own for a great career. The group WAM here's George Michael up front with careless whisper. I said we're gonna dance again, guilty of being a god in your river, but it's easy to pretend,
and we are not a fool. We should've known better to cheat a friend, and waste the chance that I'd be a giver, so we're never gonna dance again, to go where I dance with you. Sit down strap in as we head to the decade that took us out of the 60s. In one of the heaviest raids in Southeast Asia over 400 US fighter bombers attacked North Vietnamese troops, trucks and supply lines. A federal jury went to a third day of deliberation in the trial of the Chicago 7, but
meanwhile two of their lawyers received prison sentences for contempt of court and 102 persons died when a Dominican airliner crashed in the Caribbean. In the movies there was Plutney Swope, the kids were going to see Downhill Racer, there was the music of Paint Your Wagon, the drama of Goodbye Mr. Chips, Disney gave us the Computer War tennis shoes, but the very sophisticated were enjoying Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice, which had a kind of prophetic soundtrack from Jackie
DeShannon. TV Tonight kicked it off with an episode of To Tell the Truth, there was It Takes the Thief over on ABC, CBS adheres Lucy, Bob Hope was over on NBC with another special that featured Raquel Welch and Johnny Cash, but NBC owned the 8 o'clock hour with… From the school of animal husbandry and marriage counseling in beautiful downtown Burbank, Rowan and Martin Zappin. And Rowan and Martin, with special guest star James Garner and special regulars are the Johnson,
with… with Bobby, Henry Gibson, Bobby Hahn and Sue, Joanne Wertley, Rowan, Willie, Willie, Theresa Gray, and all of you, Joe Lee-Loy, Billy Pilgrim, and Steve Killam, and he and Dario from the third prank and the bottle ban. That's faster. That's faster. And me, I'm Ferd Burple. Time machine. On the radio, a guy named Tony Burrows, who was on the charts a bunch of times all through the 70s. He had five different
groups, including one called the Pipkins. He also knew him as a brotherhood of man, first class, and even a group called White Plains. This week though was his biggest hit at the top of the charts under the name Edison Lighthouse. It was Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes. People say she's crazy and has lots of mystery. Oh, what love grows where my rosemary goes and nobody knows who I need.
