Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to the point where all parts of pop culture come together. Is comedy in a sorry state right now? Well, there's one guy that's been doing it long enough to have an opinion. And believe me, he's not afraid to share it. Stand by for Pat Cooper. Dr. Who gets a new companion and up goes way up in the box office. It's Monday, June 1st, 2009. And we get to the point right now.

You can say it today, just like you could a decade, two decades, four decades, even longer ago. Comedy is king. We all love to laugh, especially when times are just a little bit tough. But what about the style of comedy today? A lot of people have some comments about that. Is it going a little bit too far? Are things really not funny that we consider to be funny? Well, there's probably no better person for an opinion on that than a guy that began comedy on the Jackie Gleason

show in 1963. And he's been performing consistently ever since and shows no sign of slowing down. He's Pat Cooper. When it comes to talking about the state of comedy today, Pat doesn't hold back. I can say that, but there are entertainers now, common entertainers that have just blew their top and there's no bottom line anymore. And some of it is really terribly garbage. And I'm surprised that some of these places on television allow that stuff to be told. When

you start talking about people's body and knocking people's body, that's a terrible, terrible scenario. And I don't think that's going to last so long. Hopefully, I'm right. I don't mind. I'm not, you know, you want to get a little risque. I can understand that. I'm not approved, but I'm talking out and out garbage. And some of these people ought to be ashamed of themselves, but they have no class and they don't understand the art of comedy. It's not garbage. It's saying

things that funny that people walk out of the theater and say, gee, that was funny. I remember that. That's wonderful. I mean, the Jack Benny's and all these kind of guys are melting wild. Those are all these guys are gone, but these guys were treasures. I don't think you're going to see too many treasures in this new era realizes that things do come in cycles. And over the past decade or so, while there's been a lot of innovations in the media that have certainly

changed things. And again, the music has changed. Everything has changed. I mean, but that's okay. People are allowed their era. My era is over. I respect that. But that doesn't mean that when you get into a new era, you got to just flop down on everything and not respect your character and that respect your dignity, spilling out something on television that has went to do with with humor. That's a shame. Probably one of the more raucous forms of

comedy these days are the celebrity roast, but they're not new. They've been around for decades and they're a style of comedy that Pat says belongs in its own category. When you're talking about a roast, that's one thing. A roast is an intimate thing that's not for the public. A roast. So you can practically say, you know, anything but not to to disgrace a man's body or a woman's body if you're roasting them. It's nice to tease him, to kid him, and to make fun of certain gestures.

That's fine. But a roast, you know, before they get up on that stage, they should be prepared because if you palm on a roast, you'll never live it down. Cable certainly has played a part in allowing a stage for comedians to be well, shall we say, a little bit less family friendly than they could in the past. Pat understands that and still feels that it's gone just a little too far. Where's the joy of that? I mean, I learned my craft the hard way, but today there's no

odd way you get six funny minutes. You're lined up with a series. He's got more to say, believe me, Pat Cooper is currently doing a tour of comedy stores around the U.S. Check your listings to see what he's going to be in your area. It's Monday, June 1st, 2009. Here's what we're talking about in pop culture today. It's so surprising that Up was way up at the top of the box office list this weekend. $68 million is the box office estimate for that animated feature. Night at the

Museum came in at number two and at number three, Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell, Terminator Salvation and Star Trek Around Out the Top Five. X-Men Wolverine slips down to number eight. But what about next weekend? Can an R-rated comedy make intended all this? We'll find out when a much anticipated hangover hits theaters next weekend. It's a totally left turn, but then again, they've done this before. Producers of Doctor Who have now announced the Doctor's new companion

and she's Scottish-born actress, Karen Gillian. She's currently in a program called Kevin Bishop Show. It's a comedy program that airs on the BBC. She also has appeared in a Doctor Who episode. She had a part in the Fires of Pompeii episode of the last full season of Doctor Who just about a year ago. As you run to Wikipedia to check her out, Karen will be joining Dr. Matt Smith in his new role as a doctor in Adventures that Begin in the Spring of 2010 for the BBC. Speculation in

the comics world is running rampant all about Captain America number 600. Now let's go back a couple of steps. For a few months now, there have been some teaser images that Marvel has released for this landmark issue of Captain America. And to be honest, there's nothing out of the, well, extraordinary. There are some interesting images, multi-Captain America figures, and another image with a title called A Girl Without a World. There's been no direct correlation to how

these all tie into whatever happens in Captain America number 600, but here's what's interesting. In a special program, retailers are allowed to have this issue on sale on Monday, June 15th, breaking the rule that most comics of barring holidays always come out on Wednesday. So what's going to happen? Well, Marvel only says that there'll be a surprising announcement in the mainstream press right around that time and people are going to want to have this issue on sale on

June 15th. Now in addition to this, Marvel's going back to press on a previous issue of Captain America. Cap number 50 has a second printing that'll be in comic stores the Wednesday before this big time Monday. It'll be in there on June the 10th, pallet ties into Captain America 600. Well, at yet another piece of the puzzle. Now those are the facts. Let's step into rumors now on what could be happening in Captain America number 600. Well, it's obvious that something is going to happen to

the character itself and a lot of folks seem to think that Steve Rogers will return as the one the only the original Captain America after being dead. And there are quotes around that because it's Marvel comics for the past three years. We'll find out more at least between now and June 15th and mainstream press will carry that story that day. Grab a newspaper and head to a comic store so you can be part of the action. Never want to pass up another opportunity to latch on to

presidential popularity. Marvel Comics has opened the doors of its lockjaw in the pet Avengers series to the first dog. Little Bo Obama will appear in issue number four of that series from Marvel. If it sounds like you're interested in this, I would suggest grabbing it quick. This looks like one of those books is going to be have a multiple sellout and a lot of different varying printings. It'll be in stores on August 12th for Marvel Comics. It looks like Dwayne

McDuffie has been fired from DC's Justice League of America title. In an online interview, McDuffie cited the fact that the firing came from a compilation of comments he made in a number of different areas on the web about his frustrations in working with DC and on the Justice League title. In the meantime, it looks like issue number 33 will be his last one. Len Wien picks it up after that. McDuffie though is still going to be working heavily in comics. Don't worry there. He's editing

the Cartoon Network's Ben 10 Alien Force. He has an upcoming Ben 10 Evolutions series. He's also working on a milestone forever project for DC and he's slated to write a direct DVD animated feature for Warner Animation. Seems like there's still some more nuggets left in the world of Jim Henson to be brought into comics and the next one appears to be Fraggle Rock. Some rumors on Twitter talk about the fact that Arcea Press coming back from the dead the past few weeks will be the new publisher

of a Fraggle Rock series. Arcea by the way the guys have did a number of different comics including that great Mouse Guard series a year or so ago. It's all on Twitter and it's all just speculation and tease at this particular point in time. I'd look for more news as we get closer to Comic Con. Our buddies over at G4 got to do the exclusive this week on a brand new series coming from Marvel. It's interesting because some of the names involved and the character as well. Alex Ross and Mike

Carrier teaming up for a miniseries that stars the original Human Torch. Nope not Johnny Storm. This is the guy who debuted way back in 1939 in Marvel Comics number one. The Android guy that later on became The Vision and well there's a whole continuity thread there we don't have to get into at this point. Alex Ross is providing the concept and the covers that will be an eight issue miniseries and the Torch number one is set to debut for Marvel Comics in September. In the wake of the San Diego's,

the Chicago's and even the Baltimore's here's a little convention over the summer that might escape your notice but it's kind of interesting it's the Screaming Teegee Con and it takes place in Cleveland, Ohio coming up in July. July 10th to the 12th to be exact. An interesting guest list here that includes Edward James Olmos from Battlestar. Michael Rosenbaum from Smallville, the kid who played Boba Fett, Helen Slater who played Supergirl back in the 70s and so many more

artists and writers to fill the gap as well. Other interesting events include your chance to ride on the original 60s Batcopter from the Batman TV show. A little more historic than that will be the ribbon cutting for the restored home of Jerry Siegel. The home where he and Joe Shuster are sad as teenagers and created Superman. There's going to be a renaming of streets in the area like Jerry Siegel Lane and Joe Shuster Lane as well and it'll be a landmark in the Cleveland area.

Another sellout for the Disney Pixar line of comics from Boom Studios Incredibles Family Matters number two. That's now sold out in comic stores pretty much around America. There may be a few left if you're lucky enough to dig around on the shelves in your local area. Meanwhile there's going to be a second printing of the title available for retailers

to order very very soon and they should be in the store near you by about mid-June or so. Incredible Family Matters number two second printing also has a brand new cover as well. In case you're keeping track the Incredible Family Matters number one, The Muppet Show comic number one, Cars the Rookie number one, and Muppet Show comic book number two all have sold out first printings from Boom Studios. Here's a movie you probably won't see

first at least legally. Variety says that the new Steven Spielberg Adventures of Tin Tin, The Secret of the Unicorn, debuts here in the U.S. on December 23, 2011. Now that's going to be well after the film opens around the world. People there will get to see it in late October or early November of that year. They say that the decision from Paramount and Sony to open the film overseas reflects the fact that the original Tin Tin graphic novels that have sold more than 200 million copies

are far more popular in other parts of the world than they are here in the U.S. And a side note, they also say that Paramount and Sony are releasing the Tin Tin movie in 3D after looking at some of the footage shots so far. They feel 3D would be a great enhancement to what the film is becoming. Fresh on the heels of this weekend's Up success story in the box office world, DreamWorks has announced plans to release eight 3D animated features, five original films, and three sequels

between now and 2012 staking out some pretty important dates on the movie-going calendar. It begins in 2010 with How to Train Your Dragon, released in March that year. Shrek Forever After goes into theaters on May 21, 2010. Ubermind is released on November 5, 2010. Kung Fu Panda the Kaboom of Doom hits theaters June 3, 2011. There's The Guardians, also in 2011 on November the 4th. Plus in Boots on March 30,

2012, Madagascar 3 hits theaters on May 25, 2012 as well. If somebody in your house enjoys the Dinosaur King anime that's been airing on the CW for Kids Network, well they might also enjoy the trading card game that goes along with it. That's been out for a little bit but there's a new major new expansion headed to Source this summer. Dinosaur King the trading card game, Alpha Dinosaur's Attack will be in Source on August the 4th. It's a huge expansion that has

a lot of great new characters and new cards as well. All slated to be in the hands of players just in time for the premiere of the second season of the Dinosaur King anime show. That begins in September on the CW for Kids Saturday Morning animation vlog. One of the coolest things I picked up last week at Book Expo was promo art for the upcoming new Unclothed Man in the 35th century graphic novel on the way from Fantagraphics at the end of this year. It's done by an artist

named Dash Shaw. It's a really beautiful piece of work and now there's going to be even more chances for you to get involved with the property. IFC.com, that's the website of course associated with the independent film channel, is announced they're going to premiere a five-part animated web series that'll also begin around November or so. It's in conjunction with the release of the graphic novel as well. And if you'd like to get an instant fix on Dash Shaw's work, his debut graphic

novel Bottomless Belly Button, which by the way was named Publishers Weekly's graphic novel of the year for 2008 and has been named for an Eisner this year as well, is available right now. Move over Muppets, here comes John McClain, Boom Studios has announced they're going to be publishing a new series based on the die-hard run of movies, which by the way when you add them all up all four, have earned a little over a billion dollars at the box office around the world. Boom Studios

begins with die-hard year one. It goes back to the very early days of John McClain back around 1976 to explore his early years as a New York City rookie cop during America's bicentennial. Howard Chaikin is writing this first series of die-hard. Stephen Thompson is doing the artwork as well. And die-hard year one hits comic book stores in August this year. Kickstart Entertainment with the guys behind last summer's movie release of Wanted has announced a new acquisition from

comics. It's called Dear Dracula. This was originally published by Image Shadow Line last October as part of Jim Valentino's Silver Line imprint, which contains a lot of all ages material in the comic book world. Kind of bridging the gap between regular story books and traditional comics as well. Dear Dracula is written by Joshua Williamson and it's the story of a young boy who likes horror movies and decides to write to Dracula on Halloween the way other kids write

to Santa Claus on Christmas. Naturally no production dates have been set so far. Meanwhile, Williamson also has Necessary Evil, another comic book he created published by Desperado back in 2007-2008. That's in development with the Cartoon Network as well as a live action series in the very near future. There may be a few of us who missed it the first time around but it's floating all over the internet so now there's no excuse. It's a teaser preview for the new season of Torchwood at Last.

Torchwood Children of Earth and this video is all around the web currently. Shouldn't be too hard for you to find in a number of places. BBC has announced that finally they're going to run this series of Torchwood in July. As you remember it's only a short season for five episodes and more than likely they'll run those in succession on the BBC network in England. And as we get closer to the premiere of this particular Torchwood series, stay with us on the point. We've got exclusive

information and interviews with the producers of Torchwood about not only why this season ended up being as short as it is and what it contains for the characters there but also the future of Torchwood on the BBC. Schools are beginning to wind out around the country. Colleges are letting people out. Good friends are coming back home and summertime is on the horizon. And for decades summertime has always met the very best comic books. If this week in the comic book store is a

trend well it's going to be a pretty good summer. Five things we tell you this week you can't miss and the store begins with the Muppet Show number three from Boom Entertainment. Again these things have been blowing out of the stores and the adaptation of the great Jim Henson works have been pretty accurate as far as one Muppet fan here is concerned. This is number three in a series of four and it's a first printing this week if you're lucky enough to grab it. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

from Dark Horse takes a little turn from the Buffy season eight to A New Tales of the Vampire one shot this week. There's a couple of different covers on this one as well. It's pretty interesting but the big gun comes from DC. Batman and Robin number one the new series from Grant Morrison. Who's Batman and more importantly who's Robin. You'll find out with this first issue this week as well. Captain Britain and the MI 13 annual number one is another thing to point you toward

in the stores this week. Again the series is coming to a close very soon and this has a major part in how it's all going to come to an end for Marvel. And finally one more time for the series that we continue to recommend every month or so. Just as enthusiastic as the first time we told you about it. The Boys number 31 this week from Dynamic Forces. Here's your list of the hard stuff to find in the comic stores this week. The second printings and the variant covers as well.

Incredibles Family Matters number one has a second printing variant this week from Boom Entertainment. There's also one for Irredeemable number one. That's a second printing variant. Battle Star Galactica final five number three from Dynamic Forces as a variant cover. There's a couple of different variant covers of course to DC's Batman and Robin number one including a really nice and probably hard to get sketch edition. There's Superman World of New Krypton number four that

has a variant this week from DC. Marvel's third issue of Daredevil Noir has a variant this week. There's a second printing variant for Thunderbolts number 131. And in the Ultimate universe here's a whole bunch. Ultimatum number one has a second printing variant. There's a third printing variant to Ultimatum number two and a second printing to Ultimatum number three. And finally there's a J. Lee variant for this week's War of the Kings number four from Marvel. Sping ya Marvel a whole

bunch of new dark rain tie-ins this week. Get your list ready. It starts with Agent of Atlas number six. Amazing Spider-Man number 596. Black Panther 2 number five. Dark Avengers number five. Mighty Avengers number 25. And New Avengers reunion number four. Final issue of that mini series for Marvel. The point, the point, the point. And he sees John Cameron Cameron. I am the god of hellfire and I bring you weird scenes inside the gold man. Oh now I don't believe it. We understand why

vultures like Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh meticulously misrepresent Judge Sotomayor's comments by quoting her completely out of context. She becomes the bigot not the repub right. biggest hit in fact their only one this year but it was a great one it's the shades of blue and oh how happy a thousand times and more times than i can count i have called you my you have stood by me in my darkest hour and oh how happy oh
