Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to The Point where all parts of pop culture come together so you're doing one of those mundane tasks you do every day. You let your mind wander and what happens? Well, one guy we know turned it into a book and now maybe into a movie as well. There's big news coming out of E3 and even bigger news with us. It's Friday, June 5th, 2009. Just about every one of us probably has what you'd call a mundane task. Something we do every day. It may not be the most exciting thing in the world, but it's something that to get some sort of thing accomplished we have to do. Now during that time, what if you were to spend it letting your imagination

run wild? Come up with new concepts and exciting adventures and maybe even write a story based on the things that you produce in your mind during your task. Well meet Frank McKinney, entrepreneur, real estate radical and now the author of Dead Fred Flying Lunchboxes and the Good Luck Circle is a book that's based upon the fact that I have walked my daughter to school since pre-kindergarten over 1100 times. She's never been driven.

She's going into sixth grade, never once driven. Walk through a dense grove of mangrove trees, through a nature preserve over a drawbridge every single day of her life. You can imagine the stories, games and adventures we've codified now into this book where the protagonist moves from Indiana, a very shy and insecure little girl. She is charged with by default restoring King Frederick the Ninth, who she calls Dead Fred, three inch shiner fish, as the ruler

of the underwater kingdom called High Voltage. Underwater that has been taken over by Megalodon, the 50 foot prehistoric shark that has come back to life, has a bite stronger than T-Rex and was alive 50 million years ago. So she learns how to build her character and her strength. At the same time, the adults who read the book will learn how to avoid cynicism around our children and to maybe pay a little bit more attention because the one adult character

is always texting and blackberrying and blah blah blah. And so it's as good for adults as it is for kids. Even before turning it into a novel, Frank and his daughter began sharing the stories of Dead Fred on a local level. This walk to school has grown to where the first Friday of every month she invites whoever wants to come on these walks to school. This first Friday, we had 68 kids that walked from our house to school that just lived this

adventure so I thought it was a story there. In the world of Harry Potter, it seems like Dead Fred is almost dead certain to end up as a movie or a comic book or somewhere else besides just in the novel. Now, Frank wouldn't let us know exactly what his plans were but he was more than willing to tease us just a bit. We decided to have a movie poster for a book cover because you'll read the story. I mean, I'm not a movie guy but there was

something about it that said, I went to the guy and said, let's just skip the whole sketch art stuff. Let's go straight to the movie poster. So, you'll see. right now. There's a big weekend coming up. Now, you know you could say that just about any weekend in the summer especially when it comes to the world of comics and it would be true but this weekend is especially important. The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art in New York better known as Mocha has their annual festival this weekend and it is going to be big. It's truly a celebration of the art form and it features hundreds of exhibit tables

from indie comics to web comics to mini comics. All your favorite creators of all this are right there. Happy to meet you and showing things that you might not have a chance to see otherwise. There's never been a time that I haven't gone to Mocha that I haven't come away with at least two new books that I had no idea existed and were soon on my favorite reading list. It is this weekend, June 7th, 2008, at the Lexington Armory in New York

Some more news out of E3 and good news for Mario fans, the sequel to Super Mario Galaxy has finally been announced by Nintendo. A lot of good graphics at least that's what

we hear. Yoshi is part of the game as well and if you'd like to see more about this, there's a trailer up right now at E3.Nintendo.com. Meanwhile, there seem to be mixed feelings about the new PSP announced by Sony. It'll hit stores the first day of October of this year. Retail price is about $249, one of the pluses. Well, the screen is a little smaller. Is that a plus? I'm not sure, but there's a lot of other changes as well including 16

gigabytes of flash memory which can also be expanded through a memory card slot so that is definitely a good thing. Also add to the good list that there'll be a lot more games available for download through the PlayStation Store and also out the same day as the release of the PSP will be Gran Turismo. Again, that date is October 1st this year. This week a couple of more interesting casting rumors, one a little bit more than a rumor

but we'll get to that after the one that is a big maybe attached to it. And that's the fact that Flash Gordon actor Brian Blessed might be playing Odin in the Marvel Thor movie. Seems to be a number of people reporting that as fact but no confirmation yet from Marvel Studios. Meanwhile, the producers of Lost have almost confirmed that Emily DeRaven will be back next season full time as Claire on the series. No explanation as to how that's

going to happen and speculation that is certainly running rampant on the internet but she will be a part of the program when Lost returns early in 2010 on ABC. The latest Nielsen book scan report, that's the one that gives us the top 10 or 20 graphic novels every month, has one or two interesting surprises on it. In the top 10 of course there's lots and lots of manga, lots of Naruto volumes as well as Full Metal Alchemist and others.

Interesting note though is that number 5 is Star Trek Countdown. That's a movie prequel from IDW. Also in there at number 8 is Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 Volume 4. At the top of the list, well this deserves notice as well, it's been 11 months and it's still there the Watchmen Trade paperback from DC. Number 1 again on the monthly graphic novel list from Nielsen. Here's a note we want to pass on for our buddy Peter David. He's

in the process of putting together a Spider-Man book along the lines of those vault books that came out from DC and Marvel over the past year or so. It's going to be a history illustrated wise of Spider-Man and lots of oddball stuff is always needed. That's what makes these books very cool. If you have anything Spider-Man related, memorabilia, toys, pictures, unusual sketches or illustrations, anything you think might be interesting, well there's

no money involved but you do get credit in the book and I gotta tell you putting a book like this together is going to be a lot of fun. Collector's Guide magazine. It's a bi-monthly entertainment magazine that hit stands in early July and it'll be 80 pages, retail for about $9.99, have all sorts of collecting information, preview of the movies and pull out posters and the usual. By the way, if you wonder what this is all about, well here are the numbers of proof of the Twilight Novel series accounts for about 16% of all the books sold the first quarter of this year and the

movie is considered to be on all accounts the most anticipated film release of what's left of 2009. The points, baby y'all! I don't know what they have to say, it makes no difference anyway, whatever it is, I'm against it. No matter what it is or who commenced it, I'm against it.

Weird scenes inside the gold mine. We can do all that, you should! You can't see us having a good time! Originally, nostalgia was the name of a disease, sort of like Melancholia. Well, I'm going to talk about nostalgia for a bygone era that this past week was finally put in its grave. When I was a young baby boomer, my friends and I could identify just about every car

that went down the road. Model, make and year. They were that distinct. All they had in common was their size. By today's standards, they were huge and heavy and powerful. But they were magic. Well-designed, usually well-built, certainly well thought out. The debut of the new car season was so anticipated that one year General Motors, remember General Motors? Bought a six minute block of airtime on about a half dozen TV programs to announce

their new cars. I think it was the 1965 model year, give or take. The shows ran without commercial interruption and people stayed there for the big GM commercial at the end. That's how badly we wanted to see the new cars. Those beautiful beasts got about eight miles to the gallon. Today a hummer gets better mileage. Of course, the gas costs about 29 cents a gallon. See how far 29 cents will get you in that

Hummer. Driving was an experience. The great US highways like Route 66 were still around. Entire families would go out for a Sunday drive with no real destination in mind. It was a fun time, but it's been over for 35 years. The dream is over and that's okay. We'll make new dreams. This is weird scenes inside the gold

mind. I'm Mike Gold on the point. Hey, let's start out the weekend with a drip back to 1997. Former CIA employee and admitted spy Harold Nicholson was sentenced to 23 years in prison. A Colorado jury continued to hear emotional testimony in the trial of Timothy McVeigh accused in the Oklahoma City bombings. After pressure from women's groups, lawyers for President Clinton decided not to include

Paula Jones sexual history and the evidence they would use in their defense in the sexual harassment case. In the movies, there was a lost world till there was you break down Bruce Willis in the fifth element and addicted to love with Matthew Broderick and Meg Ryan and a great sixties classic in the background. TV tonight had all the attention on NBC and Friends. There was also suddenly Susan on that network. Couple of interesting shows you hadn't

heard of in a long time called High Incident and Turning Point. On Fox, there was Martin and then back on NBC to close the night. It was a yard. On the radio, a UK band that borrowed from Bing Crosby for this one. It hit number one in that country. Over here was used in a Paul Rudd directed DVD movie a few years later. It's White Town and I could never be your woman. Now I know your heart, I know your mind. You don't even know your bit of kind. So much for all your

high-brow boxes to place. Just use me open and you will walk her away. Or you can't make it that way. Step back in the box because now we're going back to 1975. Egypt president Anwar Sadat reopened the Suez Canal calling it a tributary of peace. Greek heiress Christina Onassa said that half of her father's late fortune would be used for welfare projects in their home country of Greece. The Soviet Union began a month-long test of long-range missiles

firing warheads aimlessly into the Pacific Ocean. In the movies, there was a comedy of young Frankenstein, there was Mandingo, the Great Waldo Pepper, Posse, Death Race 2000 and more in Beatty and Shampoo with a lot of very familiar but uncredited songs like this one from the Beach Boys. TV Tonight had Sunshine, Karen, the streets of San Francisco and a special called Good Night America with Geraldo Rivera featuring a great performance by Sly and the Family Stone.

On a radio, a group that was a mainstay in the music videos all through the 70s. They were up to number eight in their series of numbered album releases and on tour over the summer with the incredible Beach Boys as well. Couple of hits on the album but this was the biggest.
