Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to The Point where all parts of pop culture come together. You know how great it is to see your favorite comic characters on the big screen or even in a DVD feature, but who makes a decision as to what they sound like? You'll get to meet her coming up. In the meantime, Stan the Man says grab your violin. He needs help. It's Friday, February 26, 2010. We get to The Point right now.
This is The Point, The Point radio, get The Point radio. One of the main components of the success of the DC Direct to DVD animation features is the fact that they draw not only the characters from the comics, but a lot of the creators as well. Bruce Timm has played in both arenas and now you can add the name Dwayne McDuffie to that list as well. Coming off a recent run on the Justice League comic, Dwayne is
also the writer of the newest DC Direct to DVD feature, Justice League Crisis on Two Words. And he made the switch for a particular reason. I actually really like writing the characters, so whether it's for comics or whether it's for a movie like this one or you know some new medium, maybe I'll do a stage play next. Which character does he enjoy animating the most? I really enjoy writing Batman's voice. In this movie I really enjoyed
Owlman who is probably the most twisted villain that I've worked with. Yeah, he's really got a problem. Along with the producing talents of Bruce Timm, one of the other more successful components of the package is Andrea Romano, director of most of the recent DVD releases including the Justice League film just out a few days ago. Besides choosing the right characters to animate, the right voices are a very important part of this. So how does
Andrea make those choices? You know there's a lot of different ways that casting ideas come to me and I don't work alone in casting. I have a lot of people that help me as far as the producer Bruce Timm often has ideas, the animation directors often have ideas. But what happens is because I watch a lot of TV and a lot of films because I need to know what's going on in the theatrical world, I'll see somebody and say, I'll keep them
in the back of my mind and say they would be really good as a Superman, as a Lex Luthor, as a Batman. And then when a project comes along that we're actually casting for, they'll be on that list. And I literally keep a post-it note on my bulletin board, just a list on several of them of don't forget so and so because they'd be fun to have in. Or agents will call me and say I just signed X-actor and he is a huge fan of animation and he's
always wanted to play Batman. And so I have a lot of different sources whereby I find talent and where I think about actors for certain roles. Most recently there were reports on the internet that Mark Hamill would not be returning to the role of the Joker in any future DVD animated feature. As you can hear, Andrea is not quite ready to give up on that yet.
I love his performance and know what happens is you get it, it's like Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill to me are Batman and Joker. They just are. Not to say other people can't play it but they embody it for me. Whenever I am prepping a script, I call homemarking a script, I'm getting ready to record it. I hear Kevin Conroy's voice, I hear Mark Hamill's voice. I have to make the adjustment in order to work with the other people that I'm working
with but they all come through for me. They all, I'm lucky that I have such a talent pool of really talented actors that for whatever reason let themselves be in my hands. And so they can trust me, I won't pull a rug out from under them and I won't let their voice go out there sounding bad. I promise them always at the beginning of a session I will make sure you sound good when we go out, trust me. And they do. And so I have been
so lucky to work with remarkable people, remarkable. So Amongger posted notes, who would she like to see do some voices? One of them particularly right now is Jon Hamm. I'm just crazy about Jon Hamm. I think he's so, he's good at comedy, he's good at drama, he's a terrific guy from everything everyone has ever told me. And I know that he would probably do this if he could just
work into a schedule but he may be one of the busiest actors on the planet. But I'm a huge fan and I'd love to have him come play. And the character he'd play? I think he could play so many characters. I mean I would trust him with Superman, I would trust him. I would trust him with Superman, I would trust him with Lex Luthor. I really
think he could play a lot of different characters. I really do. I think he's really talented. Along those same lines we had a chance to talk to Tim Daly who was the original voice of Superman in the Superman animated series and also recreated the role again in last summer's release of Superman, Batman, Public Enemies. So what happened? Why isn't he still wearing the cape?
You know I can actually walk away from it. I feel bad about that because I love doing it and I love working with Andrea and you know that whole experience was great for me. It just was, you know, life kind of intergene that moved back to the east coast, I was living in Rhode Island and it just became sort of logistically impossible for me to do it for a while. But yeah I do it again on a heartbeat. I really enjoy it.
Tim of course may be known as the master of great television series that well nobody seems to appreciate from time to time. That hasn't stopped him from being proud of each and every one of those performances. You know I'm still very proud of the nine and I, which is great shows, I'm very proud of the future. You know so I've gotten to do some interesting work and that's sort of
the ultimate goal for me. You know it's something I try to practice is paying on and it seems to be a great option but it's, you know, I just have to go by what my gut tells me in terms of security on the character. You can catch Tim as Superman in Superman, Batman, Public Enemy still available on DVD and Justice League Crisis on Two Earths is available on disc in good DVD stores right
now. It's Friday, February 26, 2010. Here's what's going on in pop culture. Those of us in pop culture journalism walk a fine line especially when it comes to rumors. Some we ignore, some we report, some we ignore, some we just hope are true because well they're just way too cool and here's one for you. Latina Review has printed a story saying David S. Goyer
has been hired to write the screenplay for Superman, The Man of Steel. That would be the new Superman movie being overseen in some capacity by Christopher Nolan. The review says that Goyer has been hired to write a fun John Byrne type script that will have no ties to the Christopher Reeve or the Bryan Singer version of the character and that it would feature Lex Luthor and Brainiac. Right now there have also been similar reports saying
this is not necessarily true but the word yet seems to be thrown into the sentences a lot so we'll see. Charlene Harris, the writer who brought us True Blood and you know how good that is, is also an author of well many other great vampire and mystery stories and now some of those are being brought into graphic novels by Dynamite Entertainment. The first one will be Grave Sight. It's part of a series by the way involving Harper Conley
just in case you're keeping track of Charlene's characters. In the meantime Dynamite plans to bring this to a graphic novel sometime later this year. There's no word on whether Ms. Harris will be involved with any future projects in comics. You can add Mickey Rourke to the cast list of the upcoming Conan feature. He will be playing the father of Conan who by the way dies early in the film. Rourke will be joining a number of other actors playing
not only Conan but also a young version of the character as well and shooting for the feature is scheduled to begin in Bulgaria sometime in the next couple of weeks. Todd McFarland says there will be a Spawn 2 movie. In fact he's so convinced he's not only paying for it he's going to write, direct and produce it himself. Spawn 2 is being looked at with a budget of about 20 million at least under the way the project is designed by McFarland
and he says for an independent movie that's a damn good budget. No word yet on if this project will come to fruition or when it would do so. McFarland right now very involved in a lot of different comics and image on the art side including Inking the Monthly Haunt with Robert Kirkman who co-created the book with him. It reports out of Hollywood that Matt Damon might be playing Robert F. Kennedy on the big screen. Damon would play RFK in
a film based on the book His Life published in 2000. Gary Ross has been said to be the director Steven Knight would write the script as well. Speaking by the way of casting add another name to the short list of people who might be Captain America. John Krasinski from The Office seems to be coming up on a lot of those lists lately and again we should get a final answer as to who's going to wield the shield sometime in the next few days.
Other red carpet doing publicity for cop out Bruce Willis was asked about the future of Die Hard or if there was a future and he answered pretty positive. He said that sometime next year he's looking to do a Die Hard 5. No word yet on exactly what will encompass although Willis did say he'd like to see the franchise go worldwide as opposed to being centered in just a city like New York or Los Angeles. And then there's that uncomfortable subject
of how to get the movie rated PG or R and those who saw the last Die Hard movie will certainly know how that could affect the material. So here's this week's head scratchers the Stan Lee documentary with great power the Stan Lee story just about finished and we're heading for the editing stage but right now it needs a soundtrack and the people behind it don't necessarily want to pay the licensing fees which I have to admit are sometimes pretty
high depending upon the music you search out. So they're looking for fans of Marvel comics who are accomplished musicians non-union who would like to take part in the scoring. There's an entire list of the different things they need and the requirements up on the website check it out if you're a musician somewhere in the California area or willing to travel there in the time for the recording which will be not that far from right now. Again
pretty much all the information and your questions can be answered at TrueBleaverTheMovie.com. Abrams is taking up the public tours of the Simpson Futurama crossover crisis hardcover originally scheduled to be released by Bongo and HarperCollins it's now been repackaged in a pretty deluxe edition a double die cut slip case and a bonus facsimile a reprint of Simpson number one with an intro by Matt Groeninger just part of the package. There's
also a preliminary sketches and a pin up gallery with work by people like Kyle Baker Sergio Argona's Alex Ross and Bernie Wrightson. The hardcover from Abrams will be available in stores in April. If you're looking for the usual springtime release of the overstreet price guide well you got a little bit of weight ahead of you for the first time in the price guides history it's going to be released later in the year this time in July it just to go
inside with the San Diego Comic Con by the way. The new edition has 1100 pages two different covers including a Batman cover by Mark Chiarello and a beautiful Captain America cover by Darwin Cook also features a lot of things about the year 1970 the year that the guide first came out including a feature on Conan number one the most amazing list of variants ever in one particular book at least that's what they say and a lot more it'll be available with
retailers in both a soft and a hardcover and again it's scheduled to be released the 21st of July. Ian McShane has now officially joined the cast of Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides that follows a recent announcement that Penelope Cruz has also done the same on the third movie which by the way is loosely adapted from a book by Tim Powers called On Stranger Tides. The Johnny Depp starred feature is set to go into production sometime the next
few months and Pirates of the Caribbean 4 will be in theaters coming up on May 20th 2011. Gil Bellows who you might know from Ally McBeal or maybe even 24 Redemption is picking up some work in the last few episodes of Smallville this season playing Maxwell Lord. Of course the character of Lord was created in 1987 by Giffen and DiMatteus and their run on the Justice League International title and you pretty much know what happened
to him. In the meantime he also joins people like Annette O'Toole returning as Martha Kent, Brian Austin Green coming back as Mattallo and Michael McKean returning as Perry White also coming up this season on Smallville. It'll be the home stretch for Chuck when it returns to the NBC schedule after the Olympics in just a few days and it could be a lot more than that with some pretty strong episodes that will more than likely determine whether

Weird scenes inside the gold mine I'm shocked, shocked This is Mike Gold. When is a racist cartoon character no longer racist? Warner Brothers New Line Cinema figured out the trick. Speedy Gonzales is back, this time voiced by George Lopez who's also a co-producer.
Speedy's been around for 60 years but has been reduced to small roles in cluster cartoons like Space Jam after having been branded stereotypically racist and severely outdated. George's wife Anne who's also a co-producer stated we wanted to make sure it was not the Speedy of the 1950s, the racist Speedy. He's going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting and he's a little too fast for what
they do. Ah, I see. Speedy Gonzales Why don't you come home? Speedy Gonzales How come you leave me all alone?
Hey Rosita I have to go shopping downtown for my motor she needs some tortillas and chili bampers. This all sounds a bit hinky to me. Since the 1950 debut, the Speedy Gonzales term has taken on an additional meaning, that of illegal immigrants dashing across the border. So while the Lopez family might be trying to retire one stereotype, they run the risk of promoting
another. No word yet on Warner Brothers' remake of the classic Cole Black and the Seven Dwarves, voiced perhaps by Chris Rock and Pam Greer.
