the point, the point. Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to the point where all parts of pop culture come together. Well, lots of blowing up and shooting going on on TV this summer and the guy behind it is Matt mix creator of the good guys and burn notice and we'll find out what's going on there coming up in the meantime for the box office big weekend for Toy Story. Not so good for
Jonah Hex. It's Monday, June 21st 2010. Let's get to the point right now. This is the point, the point radio. Get the point radio. Well, it comes to television action these days is pretty much the summer of Matt mix. Matt, of course, the guy who created burn notice and runs it for the USA Network just about hitting its big third season and in the meantime also is brought to Fox.
The summer hit the good guys. So where did these concepts come from in the beginning? For example, what was the birth of burn notice? I had been friends with a guy who's a consulting producer on the show now named Michael Wilson for some time and he had worked in the private intelligence industry and I'd sort of been kicking around ideas for for something that took place in that
world for some time. And one of the things that really stood out for me in my conversations with Michael Wilson was he was always sort of giving me advice about, you know, what to do if I ever found myself in a situation where I needed to use hollow point rounds and armor piercing rounds, you know, that it was always a good idea to put a tracer round in there as well. So even when you
were about to run out of it, you know, like that. And he always sort of gave me advice as if I was going to be in that situation sometimes. And I sort of thought that was funny. And so as I was thinking about ideas for television series to pitch, I started out kind of thinking about a much more serious kind of traditional spy theme show, but it ended up evolving into something that owed a
lot more to my conversations with Michael Wilson. Actor Jeffrey Donovan, who stars in Burn Notice, came pretty much prepared for his audition originally. According to Nick Seep, while the producers, the writers, the creator himself and walked off with a part in easy fashion. That was the most confident audition I have ever seen in my life. And this is what we've seen a lot of
auditions. And so so that was kind of that. Along with his new season of the show comes some new concepts, some new directions and some new characters on Burn Notice. Well, I mean, this is this represents kind of a new relationship for Michael with people that burned in. We learn a lot more about who they are and what they do.
And, you know, we sort of. So, and it's and and, you know, Michael discovers that there are, you know, they're not just sort of an anonymous organization dedicated to doing abstract evil, you know, they're they're, you know, they're people with agendas and and budgets and specific pressures and that kind of thing. And and so, you know, he finds himself in kind of a new relationship with him. And
the character that we meet early in the season and who sort of runs throughout the season, the character of Vaughn played by Robert Wisdom, who's on the wire. Terrific. Is kind of a more reasonable face than we've seen before. You know, we're sort of Carla or Victor were very very much in Michael's face with guns and that kind of thing. Management is nobody's version of a
friendly old man. Vaughn is a reasonable guy. We'll talk more to Matt about Burn Notice. Good guys. And how do you get into the mindset of finally ending a series and what's in the future for Burn Notice? That's actually two questions that we'll cover both of them coming up.
It's Monday, June 21st, 2010. Here's what's going on in pop culture. It was a massive weekend for Toy Story 3 at the movie theaters with $111 million in ticket sales showing there's still life in the box office after some pretty quiet weekends the past month or so. The second animated sequel in a 15 year old franchise was number one right under the karate kid with another $29 million.
The 18 hung in with about $13 million this weekend. Only 49 total for that one. Not too great. The Russell Brand comedy Get Him to the Greek was fourth after picking up another 5.7 million dollars. Shrek 4 took a big hit from Toy Story. Only 5.5 billion dollars so far for that film this weekend, but don't feel too bad.
$223 million is what it's picked up so far. Biggest disaster of the weekend, a big black eye for DC Comics movie adaptations and not too good news for comic fans either. Jonah Hex debuted with just 5.2 million dollars in sixth place. Latest rumor about The Hobbit may have the name Neil Blomkamp attached to it.
Blomkamp of course who's been highly recommended by a number of folks and has a huge fan base. Well for all the right reasons would probably be a great choice for the director however there's been no decision made yet and in fact it continues to be one of the most contested and rumor inducing stories going on right now in Hollywood. Alright get out your remake checklist and scroll down to where we left off for the Monster Squad
remake. Right now they're talking to Cousins Mark and Brian Gunn about being the writers of this. Their resume of course includes their work on Journey to the Center of the Earth and being related to James Gunn you know him for doing another set of remakes including Night of the Creeps and Slither combined in one picture. As far as directing goes it looks like Rob Cohen may be the guy who gets that job for the remake of the Monster Squad.
As you know lately Spider-Man has been a well three times a month title which is pretty amazing however they pull it off by rotating the creative team. Rumors are the Marvel's gonna pull it a little closer to home, reduce it to twice a month and give the writing to one creator. That creator being Dan Slott. No definite word on this yet he's already a leading writer on the title and now well this would make it pretty much all his.
Expect a final announcement about this in time for Comic Con. Things are changing a little bit for the second season of that really good British superhero show Misfits. We told you there was a second season planned well it was set for November now it's been moved early in 2011. But the good news is in typical BBC form they've added a Misfits Christmas special coming up. That'll be shown during the holiday season it's a new one-hour episode written by the series
creator and then again the brand new series the second one for Misfits will begin early in 2011. Ah one of the great joys of summer people roll out their fan films just in time for San Diego and there's a good one out now. It's done by Aaron Schonke it's a Batman fan film it's called City of Scars. He shot it in 21 days and he had a budget of well 27,000 dollars. Not great when you consider what well a real movie would have but it sure is interesting. Check it out we've

Tying into the latest trends just like they have for decades there's a new run of Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy's books on the way in graphic novel form from Papercuts. They're called New Case Files Nancy Drew Vampire Slayer that sounds familiar it seems to be the first Nancy Drew release and a Hardy Boy's Crawling with Zombies is the first
new case files for the Hardy Boys as well. Some familiar comic names are involved like Jerry Conway and Stefan Petruca and they will be in stores coming up in September. It's like a giant game of musical chairs trying to figure out exactly where all the interest is going to land with digital comics on the web and on your mobile device. Right now a new move has been done by Comixology the bulk of their comic sales have been on mobile devices so far. Right now though
Comixology is running a beta test of a web version of its mobile active. If a user wants to they'll be able to view comics purchased through the mobile app on the website using the comics by Comixology web reader. Unlike the company's mobile application users can read comics either by viewing full pages or the guided view as well. Again it's in beta test right now full release probably later this year. Some of the classic early vampirala stories are being reprinted by Dynamite Entertainment
in collections of the Vampirala archive. Volume one contains some of the really early worn material that includes stuff by Forest Ackerman, Don Blutt, Tom Sutton, Neil Adams, Ernie Colon, Adam Weiss, Jeff Jones and even Frank Frazetta as well. In addition to the hardcover archive collection there'll also be the Vampirala Masters Series volume one featuring talents like Grant Morrison and Mark Millar. This will include some of the things from the Harris publication run of
Vampirala, Vampirala Monthly back a few years ago. Covers for this will be by Jay Lee. Both will be available soon from Dynamite Entertainment. The ever-changing saga of the Green Hornet movie continues with now word that the film will open in IMAX theaters on January 14th. Simultaneous with its debut on the regular screens as well. It'll be in 3D and 2D covering pretty much all the current big screen basis. IMAX showings by the way will be in 3D at about 20 bucks a ticket
depending upon your particular marketplace. In order to make the transition to 3D the film was moved back from December to January now falling on the Martin Luther King holiday weekend which has been pretty strong for Hollywood the past few years and might mean a good push for the film as well. Lots of merchandise already out there of course for Green Hornet including a run of comics on a regular basis from Dynamite Entertainment. Comic book sales not doing too bad
we'll tell you about that in a little while and the iPad of course you know it continues to be a top seller. Put them together and the comics app for the iPad are among the top 10 best-selling apps right now. At positions number six, seven, and eight in the top 10 you'll find Marvel, Boom Studios, and comics by Comicology also who created the apps for Marvel and Boom as well. These days is a good bet to check the app store on iTunes for comics material just pretty much
as often as you do your regular comic store. This place blows. This is my gold. I didn't see Avatar but I'll bet you a boatload of lawyers will be seeing its sequel. Larry Flint's Hustler Porn Empire just finished making what is thought to be the most expensive porn flick in history and it's called This Ain't Avatar XXX and of course it's in 3D. That's awesome although some fans of the medium might think it's a remake of the hit 1968 classic I Am Curious Blue.
Me, I'm not so curious. Porn has long been the logical subject matter for 3D movies unless you're into really small-breasted women. As it turns out there was an alien sex scene in Avatar but it was cut out because somebody thought showing the two main blue characters hooking their tails together on screen would jeopardize the movie's rating. Maybe the parody will incorporate James Cameron's environmental
message. That would make this Ain't Avatar XXX relevant, something the original was not. We can find out this September. This is my gold on the pop culture channel. Get the point. Radio.com. PC takes the top spots as we check our five things that you need to check when you go in comic stores this week. It begins with Batman Return of Bruce Wayne number three. You know I've had friends of mine who haven't read comics in years who've picked this up. Well because the
title is kind of interested and then they sort of knew what's been going on in the Batman universe. They really enjoyed it so if you haven't picked it up yet this might be a good chance to do so. Fringe. If you're Jones and for a little more of that in a Fox series well you can catch it now with a new comic series that runs for the next few months. It'll be six issues total. Fringe Tales from the Fringe number one begins this week from DC and finally another DC title Superman number 700.
You can't pass by a monument like that without at least paging through to see what they're going to be doing from here on out with The Man of Steel. Also this week from IDW you know it's a guilty pleasure you turn to it in the newspaper and you may not tell your friends about it but at some point you probably enjoyed the Family Circus. Now there's a hardcover library this is the second volume of it but hey it's not like there's a story you have to follow right. The Family Circus
hardcover library volume two out this week from IDW and also from them the beautiful Jon Sable freelance Ashes of Eden. If you've seen it on ComicMix well you know how gorgeous the work was that Mike Grell turned out for this and it's all captured in an inexpensive trade paperback this week from IDW.
