Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to The Point where all parts of pop culture come together. We get the front line scoop on comedy and on the college tour and the future of Super Droopers, all from Broken Lizard. How do you think Brett Radner would handle Hercules? Well, we'll talk about that and then hit the road for Comic Con. It's Friday, July 16th, 2010. Let's get to The Point right now.
This is The Point, The Point radio, get The Point radio. One of the benefits of performing comedy live is of course the instant audience reaction. And for the guys in the Broken Lizard comedy troupe, well, they got reaction not only to what they were doing on stage, but they got to talk to people about their films, including the much beloved classic Super Troopers. Kevin Heffernan, who of course has directed the
new Slam and Salmon direct the DVD Broken Lizard feature and will be involved in Super Troopers too, of course, really enjoyed hearing about what people thought up front. I don't know. It was more kind of interesting, I think, going out there and realizing the amount of fans that you have across the country. You know, like we spend our time in certain places and whether it's LA or New York, whatever it is, making the movies that we do, and you
don't necessarily go out and meet your fans face to face. And, you know, to go out to Iowa and Milwaukee and Nashville and whatever it was and go around and, you know, fill a house with people who love your movies and then hang out with them a little bit afterwards. I think it was a kind of very cool thing. And it made it feel like, you know, hey, you got fans all over the place and all different kinds of parts of the country and they all
love the movies that you make. And it was a very good kind of feeling to get out there and see that. On the road to Super Troopers 2, what else has Broken Lizard got in the pipeline? Right now we're writing a movie for Universal and it's called Rogue Scholars. And it's a movie where we play college professors and we kind of wanted to do kind of a spin on Animal House. And so we play the professors who kind of screw around with the students
and play pranks and things like that. So that'd be funny kind of twist on that Animal House thing. So us as wild and crazy college professors is one of the next ones. And then we're also working on, we're actually working on Super Troopers 2 right now. We've written a couple drafts and scripts and we're trying to push that one forward and hopefully make that one too. So what about Super Troopers 2? Who's going to make it back? Is everybody returning
for the sequel? I don't know. You know, I think we'd love to. We'd love to get everyone back. And the story that we work on now picks up narratively right where we left off. So it would make sense to try to get everyone back. Just a matter of whether you work on everyone's schedule. He's created, he's starred and now he's directed. So what would Kevin like to do next? I don't know. People ask if you're ever interested in doing dramas
and stuff like that. I don't know. I really do love doing comedies. I think they're fun to make and they're fun to be around. The people who make them. So I don't know. Maybe someday we do some sort of dramatic acting. But I really enjoy doing the comic stuff. I think in this last movie, Simon and Sam and I, I'd say kind of straight man. So I wouldn't mind getting back to the last five of the characters and the kind of a more kind
of a wild kind of character. I think in the next movie, we kind of fun. As far as the whole group goes, what would they like to do in the future? Yeah, we had, you know, for years we've been writing the script and it was based on a sketch we used to do. And it was a Socrates Plato movie where Socrates and Plato are kind of buddies who would travel around ancient Greece and get into different hijinks and stuff like that. And so we always
want to do this kind of sword and sandal thing, comedy thing. And, you know, we've never been able to get someone to put up a budget for that just because, you know, you do these history pieces and also it gets more expensive. But we're hoping like when things like Crash of the Titans do so well, maybe somebody wants the comic version of it. So, you know, I'd say the old sword and sandal comedy would be something that we definitely
want to do. Slammin' Salmon is out on DVD right now, as is, of course, the original Super Troopers and lots of great stuff from the guys at Broken Lizard. It's Friday, July 16, 2010. And here's what's going on in pop culture. Now that Brett Radner is not going to be directing Conan. In fact, it's been so long we've been dealing with that. We actually forgot he was a contender for the role. There still might be some swords and sandals in
his future. Radner's in talk to direct Conan producer Avi Lerner's production of Hercules. He's been in development for over three years. Of course, only the very beginnings of talks are here and a lot of those are centered around rumors about Radner and Lerner's desire to work together on a film. I'm sure he's going to talk a lot about it this week at Comic-Con, but Nicholas Cage now is officially saying that he's got a deal to be Ghost Rider 2.
On the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson last week, he made the announcement saying the film would be directed by Mark Neville Dean and Brian Taylor who co-wrote and co-directed Crank. They also co-wrote Jonah Hex. Columbia has been under some pressure, of course, to get production started on Ghost Rider 2 so that they could continue to maintain their rights to that character. Come this fall, here's a movie you're going to be talking a lot about. It's called
Due Date from the guys who did Hangover with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis in kind of an anti-buddy movie. Cool trailer just came out for it. We got it posted for you right now. Check it out on our website, getthepointaradio.com. Due Date is due in theaters on November the 5th. We're heading to the theaters to see Inception. There's a prequel to the film that's available in comic book form online and it's free. It's called Inception, the Coble Job. It's a standalone
piece. You don't really need to read it before you see the movie, but it could make it a little cooler. It is available in a number of different formats over on Yahoo. You can also get it downloadable as a PDF for your iPad as well and you can grab it at Yahoo Movies. Despite the fact that the MGM studios are in financial trouble and he really doesn't officially have the job as a director, Peter Jackson is out casting for The Hobbit. Right now he's been meeting over the past
few weeks in Los Angeles and New York with various actors talking to them about coming on board for the film. Of course no production schedule. In fact, like we said, there's a lot of ink to be put on paper before The Hobbit actually happens. Considering last weekend's box office, it's only right that we'll see a Despicable Me number two. That's already in the works. Talks between writers and producers already taking place. And Illumination Studios is also talking about making two
short films featuring the Minions, those adorable yellow thumb-shaped henchmen that everybody seems to have loved from the movie. Of course it's way too early for production dates on anything or even word as to whether Steve Carell will sign up for a Despicable Me sequel. Kind of makes you wonder why this hasn't happened before but now there are serious talks that might bring Wicked, the successful Broadway play and book, from the stage into the big screen. And listen to some of the
names that are being tossed around here. JJ Abrams, James Mangold, Ryan Murphy, and Rob Marshall. Already directors who've either met or otherwise expressed interest in the movie. Interestingly enough, Wicked actually began as a movie project with Universal before they changed course and took it to Broadway where it's doing pretty well, just about 1.4 million dollars a week in average ticket sales. If you're a fan of Scott Kurtz's popular P versus P player versus player, just like I am,
well you're gonna have to do a little work to keep up with the book because it's being pulled from the regular distribution channels. The next collection of the strip, The Cat is Plotting My Death, will not be coming out to image. It won't even be distributed by Diamond. Creator Scott Kurtz is self-publishing the book and selling copies directly to customers from his website under the Toon Hound Studios banner. His website is pvpstuff.com so that's where you'll go. There
also will not be any more single issues of PVP scheduled from image for the foreseeable future. Again, the website to get it, pvpstuff.com. This could be the most interesting, maybe the most exciting news for comics in general so far this year. Movie producer Jason Netter, comics creator Jimmy Palmiati and publisher Larry Young are forming a new company called Kickstart Comics. It's all part of the existing Kickstart Entertainment and the most interesting part is
there'll be four new comics a month all distributed to the mainstream market in places like Walmart. Also, including will be possible distribution in Best Buy and Barnes and Noble as well. Walmart will be giving shelf space to the Kickstart books in their different media departments. You can also go of course get the comics through Diamond which means that your local retailer has the opportunity to stock them as well. The books will include Bad Guys by Phil Eisner,
Riff Raiders from Mark Sable, Adam Friedman and Mark Bennerin's Hero Complex and Witch from Travis Fickett as well. It's not quite comic-con yet but here's a couple of announcements that are already being bandied about from Marvel. Look for a new ongoing series called Uncanny X-Force to launch in the fall. Rick Remender is involved with it. The team will consist of a number of heroes including Archangel, Deadpool and Psylocke as well and again it will be a monthly title. In addition
to that there is a mini-series from the astonishing lineup of books from Marvel. This one featuring both Spider-Man and Iron Man. The team up is called Astonishing Iron Man Spider-Man. It's a five issue series as well that will also include Carnage and it begins in the fall for Marvel. The point radio. We are all and we want our freedom. We are all and we want freedom.
It seems inside the gold mine. I don't know what this means. This means you can learn some real money. This is my gold. Okay I guess I'm not much of a baseball fan because I root for the Cubs but this is beyond the pale. Take me out to the ballgame. Take me out to the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and crack a jack. I don't care if I never get back. It's root, root, root for the home team. And if they don't win, what else is new? It's one, two, three strikes. Generally speaking I wouldn't lift my face out of my own puke to defend the now late George Steinbrenner. To the extent I recognize the American League as a legitimate part of Major League Baseball,
I think George was a checkbook asshole who didn't care that the essential Americanism of baseball is fair play. Like his Wall Street buddies he never got past the greed is good mantra. But then came Rush Limbaugh, the pompous fatass drug addict who couldn't make it on ESPN. Make six bullpen pitchers, carry my coffin. And six groundskeepers, clear my path. Have the umpires barked me out at every base, in all their holy wrath.
It's a beautiful day for a funeral. Hey Ernie, let's play too. Limbaugh called Steinbrenner a, and I quote, cracker who made a lot of African Americans millionaires, end quote. He also complained Steinbrenner fired a bunch of white guys as managers left and right. Okay, I just spoke ill of the dead, so that's not my problem here. And if my problem with Rush's comments isn't obvious, you simply weren't paying attention. So here it is
in different words. Rush Limbaugh is such a racist that he's just one sheet away from a cross burning. This is Mike Gold on the pop culture channel, getthepointradio.com. It was a 1% jump for comic sales in June of 2010, over the same month in 2009. Of course, these are the sales based on the direct market, the comic stores around America, and the comics distributed by diamond distribution. When you look at the entire sales picture for the
first half of 2010, well, it's almost a wash. Just about a 1% decline in comic and graphic novel sales versus last year. But when you break it out, comic sales were again up 1% the first half of this year over last year. Let's go to the list. Here's your top 20 best selling comics in stores in June, starting at Marvel's store, number 611 and number 20. Astonishing X-Men, number 34, number 19, Captain America 606 next at number 18. More Marvels at number 17,
Amazing Spider-Man 633, followed by at number 16, Amazing Spider-Man number 634. DC checks in for the first time at number 15 with Justice League of America number 46. X-Men Legacy number 237, the number 14th best selling comic in June. At number 13, the brightest day tie-in green lantern core number 49. At number 12, Superman number 700. At number 11, flash number 3 from DC. Into the top 10 for Avengers Prime number 1 at number 10, Uncanny X-Men number 525 at number 9,
Secret Avengers number 2 at number 8. Number 7th best selling comic for the month, brightest day number 4 and number 6, brightest day number 3 both from DC. More brightest day at number 5, Green Lantern number 55 there. At number 4, Return of Bruce Wayne, the Batman miniseries. Third issue of that was the fourth best selling comic. At number 3, Avengers number 2 for Marvel. At number 2, Batman number 700 and the number 1 best selling comic for the month of June in
comic stores, New Avengers number 1 for Marvel. That puts a wrap on us for this week and for a little while as we head to Comic Con 2010. Here's how you can stay in touch.
