Hello, it's Mike Raub and welcome to The Point where all parts of pop culture come together behind the scenes of USA from an actor to a director. Tim Adelson talks about what it's like to be on the set of some of the coolest shows on the USA Network. And life after Michael Scott, what's going to be on at The Office.
It's Monday, August 2, 2010. Let's get to The Point right now. This is The Point, The Point radio, get The Point radio. From Animal House to Tucker's Witch all the way to Van Wilder, Tim Adelson has been a familiar face.
And he's a familiar face behind the scenes as well, being a director of many series over the year and most recently working with the USA Network with shows like Psych, White Collar, Burn Notice and most recently the director of the pilot of the new series, Covert Affairs. It's no question that Tim is USA Network's go-to guy, but the opportunity ever came up to be on a series as a director rather than jumping in for just an episode or a pilot.
Would Tim jump on that? Yes, you know, I mean, I think that with the right people, the trick is to work with the right people. And in that situation with talented people, yes, I decided a few years ago that after I'd sort of gotten my sea legs and figured out, because I think episodic is the best
film school there is, and to go from show to show as a freelance director is the best training you can get. But at some point I said, you know, I only want to work with the people that I like, that are good, nice people and fun people and value what I do, you know, and everybody's got different expectations and likes and dislikes.
So, you know, if there was a situation that wanted me to participate on a bigger level, yeah, it'd be fun, it'd be great. Is it different coming in to direct a series that's already been established rather than coming on board for a pilot like Covert Affairs? My distinction, when you come in and do a show that is already on the air and the look
has been set, then my obligation and my function is to distill what that is and to give them a version of that with some special topspin that maybe you bring to it, you know, I love working with actors and, you know, perhaps I'm good with actors because I am an actor, you know, and I appreciate what they do and I try and, I'm there to help, I'm there to help them, I'm there to help the writers.
When you come in as a pilot director, then I serve the writers first to try and find out and distill what's the heart of the show and then use the actors and support the actors to get to that heart in their characters and then use the camera to help tell the story so that the actors don't get caught acting and it sweeps the audience up in it and hopefully it'll be over before they realize it and they'll even want it more.
Coming from the world of acting, has that helped Tim to be a better director? Yeah, I mean, I understand, I think the problems maybe of the actors a little better, you know, than a lot of directors and, you know, another great thing about being an actor was I've been, especially as a kid actor all my life, I've been an actor, I've been on a million sets and I've worked and seen, worked with and seen a million directors, you know, and good ones, bad ones,
mediocre ones, middle ones and great ones and most other directors have not had that opportunity because most other directors don't go on your other director set. They just don't feel comfortable there, it's my experience. I've seen that. I love going on other director sets because, you know, I can always learn something. So I, and as an actor, I sometimes would give a great performance or what I thought was like, wow, I nailed that and then I'd go see the film and I just realized
wow, it wasn't well directed because the camera wasn't in the right place, it just didn't look good and then I'd say wow, I sometimes I didn't do the best work I'd ever done but it, it came across well because it was well directed and I, so I, I just want to provide the actors that I get to work with the best support and the, you know, and put the camera in the right place and emphasizes and enhances their performance and create an environment where they can do their best work.
And that's my job and, you know, you're sort of like the coach on the sidelines at a football game with the playbook and, and you just talk to them and say, you know, well you could try this, you could do this or, you know, what do you think or anything in any way they want to work is fine with me. I don't, I don't have one particular way of working. So I'm just there for the writers and the actor. Catch Tim as both an actor and a director in episodes of white collar, burn notice
and psych and heavily involved in the new series, covert affairs running right now on the USA network. It's Monday, August 2nd, 2010. Here's what's going on in pop culture. There may be even more to battle star on the way. According to the Chicago Tribune, Battlestar Galactica and Caprica, co-executive producer, Michael Taylor is working on a script of a new short form online spinoff series for sci-fi. It's called book and chrome and it traces the experiences of young William Adama
in the first silent war. Again, it's an online series for sci-fi. No production schedule has been set. Actress Janie Slater, who you remember from the watchmen is now taking another turn in the superhero universe. She's showing the cast of the pilot episode of Alphas being done right now for the sci-fi channel. Alphas written by Zach Penn and Michael Carnot involves a young group of ordinary citizens whose brain anomalies give them extraordinary metal and physical abilities.
Production on Alphas is set to begin in Toronto in just a couple of weeks. Add this one to the list of projects for JJ Abrams and Bad Robot Productions and it actually seems like a natural fit. Boilerplate, the story of the very first robot who went to war. It's an actual book about an actual event that took place back in history, 1893 the year, in case you're going to look it up. It seems natural that this would be something that JJ Abrams and Bad Robot would do. After all,
it is Victorian robots. No word yet on anybody attached to the project including writers or directors. Now that it's official that Steve Carell will be exiting the office at the end of this season but the series will still continue. Lots of speculation on exactly which direction the show will take in the year after the upcoming TV season. Right now what we do know is that Melora Hardin will return for a multi-episode arc as Michael Scott's former lover Jan Levinson
and then Amy Ryan, another one of Michael's exes Holly Flax, will also return for eight episodes in this season of The Office. The court battle between Tom McFarland and Neil Gaiman continues and McFarland got a fairly hefty blow days ago when a U.S. District Court judge said that three characters in the Spawn universe, medieval Spawn Angela, co-created for the series and Dark Ages Spawn, Domina and Tiffany all could be part of the characters originally done by
Gaiman therefore allowing Gaiman to claim at least 50% of the profits on anything those characters appeared in. Right now McFarland has a little bit of time to produce some accounting as far as the use of those characters go and the case continues in U.S. District Court in Wisconsin. It's not necessarily a rumor it just isn't confirmed yet but Mark Bilar is talking about a sequel to Kick Ass that will involve a fairly hefty script pretty much spotlighting the future of Hit Girl
and the return of Red Mist as well. Bilar seems to have the plots down fairly securely no word on whether we'll see this first as a comic or it'll go directly to a possible movie script. That should be hopefully announced sometime before the end of this year. It may have slipped under the radar of a lot of fans but it definitely is true that the Thunder agents are coming back and to the DC universe which has been a long time thing. It actually began back in the early part of the
decade when DC had the rights to the characters. Things went up and down from there and well let's just say right now we have a Thunder agents book on the schedule for November. An interesting bunch of characters will be involved with it. A new version of the higher United Nations Defense Enforcement Reserves. Writer Nick Spencer is going to be involved in the new ongoing series. It'll have a 20-page lead story and then 10-page co-features about some of the minor characters
in the Thunder agents universe. Frank Whiteley does the cover to the first issue. Darwyn Cooke does the variant cover and again Thunder agents will be on the DC schedule for release with the first issue in November. IDW's series lore by Ashley Wood and T.P. Louise is now headed to the big screen according to The Hollywood Reporter. Corey Goodman from Priest and Jeremy Lotta writing the screenplay Andrew Lazar and Rick Jacobs are among the producers that also include IDW's Ted
Adams. Lore tells the story of a world where mythical creatures have been held back from the modern world by a secret society of shepherds but a line of shepherds has been broken and the creatures are on their way back into reality. So what's going on in the world of RPGs? Well here's your list of the top five best-selling role-playing games for the second quarter of 2010. It begins at number five with Rogue Trader Dark Heresy from Fantasy Flight. Shadow runs at number four.
Warhammer Fantasy Role Play is at number three. Pathfinder finds its way to number two. Number one best-selling RPG for this part of the year is still Dungeons and Dragons from Wizards of the Coast. It was a big independent back into the 90s and the beginning of this decade as well. Now Studio Folio has announced a multiple book and game license deal for Girl Genius giving it a new exposure it has not had any time in the past. There'll be books published in three formats
including a prose novel sometime in 2011. Also next year Tor Books will collect the first three Girl Genius graphic novels into a compendium that will be released in the fall of 2011 as well. And Studio Folio will continue to publish their new graphic novels with volumes 10 and 11 coming soon to complete the first arc of the Girl Genius saga. In addition there are Facebook and iPhone games based on the property that won the award for the Hugo for the best
graphic story back in 2009 and is more than likely available in some form in any good comic story you manage to visit. Grab your calendars here's the additions for the new TV season as far as the CW network goes some new premieres and some returning shows here as well to the network. Coming up on September the 8th it's America's top model returning and then the premiere of the new Tom Welling produced series Hellcats. The next day Thursday September the 9th is the return of Vampire Diaries
and the premiere of Nikita. On Monday September 13th it's 90210 and Gossip Girl both returning for a new season. The 14th has One Tree Hill and Life Unexpected returning and then Friday September 24th is a return for the final season by the way of Smallville and the premiere of the new season of Supernatural on the CW. Good news for fans of a lot of the dramas on TNT. The Closer, Rizzoli and Isles and Leverage have all been renewed for yet another season. Rizzoli and
Isles which hit big this summer is returning for a second season. The Closer will return for its seventh season next year and Leverage has been renewed back again for a season number four next year on TNT. There are known knowns there are things we know we know we also know there are known unknowns that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But they're also unknown unknowns the ones we don't know we don't know. This is my gold just when you thought
everybody who wanted to was already publishing comic books. Here comes the Tea Party. Yes the first three issues of Tea Party comics have hit the internets and if you enjoy subtle humor well you'll be disappointed. However if you're looking for blatantly racist comics with a dash of anti-Jewish sentiment this is the place for you. Three 40-page collections of parodies of classic American comic book covers with the original trademarks intact such as you
know Superboy, Batman and Thor. Each depicts a vision of President Obama that make minstrel show advertising look like handbills for the Black Panther Party. He's doing all those things that keep the paranoid right up at night. Death panels, illegal immigrants taking over the nation, even Obama choking the life out of the poor little Neicon Richie Rich. Political satire is hard to define and even harder to produce and it has to maintain the
ambiance of reality to work. Not only is this crap lacking in perspective it's also lacking in a sense of humor. Some tea backers have disavowed these books and at least a few have declared them plants from the left-wing commies. Now THAT is funny. local word Some of this fell off from Comic Con hits in comic stores this week some things that were premiered there are actually going to be available for everybody and they're on our list of the five cool things that you had to check out this week starting from Dynamic Forces Green Hornet Golden Age Remastered number one. Green Hornet one of the classic characters from the Golden Age you know
that and if you like or even don't like what's happening with the character now here's a chance to see some of the original material from Dynamic Forces. Dave Stevens the Rocketeer Artist Edition you heard people talk about this well before Comic Con and those who saw it there loved it now here's your chance to own it even if it is just a little pricey it is well worth it especially if you're any kind of a fan of the late Mr. Stevens works 75 bucks is what it costs but again not that much
when you consider what you get in this package. From Marvel Daredevil Black and White number one interesting take on the character in a new black and white format that Marvel seems to be trying a lot lately. Also Marvel Universe versus Punisher number one a four issue series one of those free for all things that Marvel only Marvel can do and they seem to do them well. Also this week the second issue of Shadowland with Daredevil and a bunch of other noir Marvel characters first issue sold out
so if you haven't grabbed that get a second pretty and then pick it up here from issue number two.
