Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to The Point where all parts of pop culture come together. If you're listening to this, then you know the name Felicia Day. You'll be excited she's back with more about the future of The Guild and the future of Felicia.

In the meantime, more new comics from Stan Lee and Not So Scary at the box office for Saw. It's Monday, November 1st, 2010. We get to The Point right now. This is The Point, The Point radio, get The Point radio.

We're most familiar with Felicia Day, of course, from The Guild and on the internet, but it all began for her way back in the days of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Now Felicia, of course, has stepped up into the action role category with a new movie on sci-fi called Red Werewolf Hunter. And now she even wants to stretch her acting a little more.

To be honest, it would be really fun to play a villain. I would love to play an evil villain. Even if it's a comedy, I'm a comedy villain, that would be really fun. And that's actually one of the things that I put on my list, like dream roles. And if I don't get to them, if somebody doesn't write the part for me or offer it, or I get

to audition for it, it's on my list to write for myself in the future because, you know, being empowered and being able to make opportunities for me is like the thing that I'm most proud of in my career. So, yeah, I would cross fingers. Somebody else would think of me for a villain part, but if they don't, I definitely down

the road would love to just kind of sink my teeth into something a little more edgy and not so nice. By the way, Felicia has also joined the cast of the sci-fi hit series, Eureka. I play a scientist that's come to Eureka to work on a secret project. Her name's Dr. Holly Martin.

And I have a very antagonistic relationship with Fargo, Douglas Fargo, played by Neil Greyson. And Dr. Isaac Parrish, who's played by Will Wheaton, is a factor in that. My attraction to him creates a lot of conflict. And I guess I'm in eight episodes.

I have to go back up and finish the finale this week. And I've got to tell you that not only are the scripts fantastic, but just working on the set is just an amazing opportunity. I feel like that show is really run by geeks in a sense. So they know their science and they really, you could see the passion in the scripts.

And they're just so funny. I've been a show, I've been a fan of the show in years past. So when they called me to be on it, I was just ecstatic. And I have to say that this season has definitely raised the bar over all their other seasons. They're really innovating and doing some really fun things with the characters and with the

dialogue. And I'm just really happy to be a part of it. As far as the medium goes, the Guild is easily one of the most successful web series. So for those who'd like to try their hand at it, what kind of advice can Felicia offer? It's like every film, really shooting it and getting it made is only like 20% of the work.

The work with the web series is being smart about how you find your audience, about how you interact with your audience and how you retain your audience. We're very privileged to have very loyal fans that carry us through with no advertising whatsoever. Microsoft puts us on our portals, but we don't have billboards, we don't have ads, we don't

have anything really to publicize us. And yet we still have millions and millions of views. We sell a DVD in stores. So it's completely word of mouth. And I think that you always have to operate, at the end of the day, you always have to

do the work yourself. So any extra help you get from your distributor or the places you upload, you always have to rely only on yourself and everything else is kind of bonus. I guess also I would say please make sure that you take time with the script. I know a lot of people who've written the first drafts of a script and they think that's

writing, but really I've discovered that the first draft is merely a roadmap and you have to really, really work so hard in order to make the script go. Because if you have a great script, it doesn't matter how much you pay your actors or how nice a camera you have or if you have money to do special effects. Like if you have a good story, it will definitely shine through.

And the problem is that some people are a little hasty and think that just having a script equals let's just go shoot it. And I think being careful about what you present is the most important thing. Because the web, you can find an audience for anything. So if you make sure your story is something that just a small segment of the population

will like, you'll find an audience and that's the beautiful thing about the web. Like a lot of the people we talk to, Felicia's got a lot going on, but that's okay. You know, I think that I'm a little ADD in the sense that I love everything I do. I love waking up to write something. I love working on a new project.

I love actually giving notes. I'm producing a couple of web series with my co-producer and we're developing the scripts and just giving, you know, being able to help people on their scripts is really fun for me. I love being on set.

I love, I mean, I love taking around the craft service tray to make sure that everybody has a carrot or a cupcake. So to me, the collaborative nature of filmmaking is something that I love. So no matter what role I'm playing, I really enjoy it. I feel like I'm really doing something that is fulfilling in life.

You know, even waking up and spreading the word about a new episode, like that, that is kind of a thrill. That's something I would never want to give up, being able to release stuff into the wild onto the web and see, you know, all the feedback, good and bad. That's just what goes with the territory when you, you know, you have millions of people

at your fingertips. So it definitely toughens you up, but definitely makes me, it keeps me going. Compared to last year, business was up a couple of percentage points, but it really wasn't that great compared to how ticket sales have been over the past few weeks. Saw 3D picked up about 22 and a half million over the weekend.

And when you kick into the rest of your top 10, well, it's pretty much normal, paranormal activity that is at number two with another 16 and a half million. Red held steady at number three again for the second week with another 10 million for that one. Back has 3D still in there at number four and hereafter dipped down a little bit to

number five. Outside the top 10, we look for some familiar titles and they're there if you look hard enough for them. It's kind of a funny story. The independent movie with Zagalapenakis so far, 5 million, almost six for that.

And still in the top 20, barely. But hey, what can you say for a movie that's done a zillion trillion dollars? Toy Story 3 picked up another 300,000 this week. Things have to do with an official total of well over 400 million dollars so far in box office sales.

Track of Stan Lee projects that have been announced and promised. Well don't. It'll just make your head hurt. And grab an aspirin because here's another one. This weekend at the Detroit Fanfare Convention, Stan announced that he's going to be working

on something with Jim Staranko. Staranko, of course, more famous for doing Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Marvel back during Stan's days there. And of course, no details so far on this one. It's election week and it may seem like just too much to think about, but there's a landmark

free speech case that could involve you, especially if you're a video game fan. It's Schwarzenegger versus EMA arguing this week before the Supreme Court. The case originated, of course, in California with Arnold in an effort to overturn a ruling by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in which California's law restricting the sale of violent video games was struck down.

If it's allowed to stand, a whole new class of content could be regulated and video games may especially be vulnerable to the line of attack that other media would likely soon follow. The Eagle Awards for comics published in 2009 were announced at the MCM Expo in London. Some of the top winners include Brian Ballen for the role of honor, Best Newcomer writer

Jonathan Hickman, favorite writer Warren Ellis, favorite writer artist Darwyn Cooke, and favorite artist on the Inker category Kevin O'Neill. The awards being based in Britain have a category for favorite American color comic book that went to Batman and Robin. Favorite British color comic book was 2000 A.D. and favorite American black and white

comic was Walking Dead. The Eagle Awards have been around since 1977. Paying homage to the company that's pretty much done a lot for his work over the past couple of years, Orson Scott Card, is going to create and write a prequel to the Ender's Game called The Formic Wars and it'll be published as a comic first.

Formic Wars Burning Earth will tell the origins of the card universe for the first time in any medium and it'll be published as a graphic novel for Marvel who's done comic adaptations of Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow, Ender in Exile, and Speaker of the Devil more lately. Hardcover collections of those comics are currently available in good comic stores. Before it's a hardcover collection, Formic Wars Burning Earth will go on sale as a 7

issue miniseries with a first issue due for Marvel in February. It could be the Godzilla series that fans have been waiting for, the one that's done right when IDW launches an ongoing series with the Toho Company in February. The series will pretty much feature every monster from the Godzilla universe and a lot of characters that have never appeared in an American Godzilla comic before.

There'll be miniseries and focusing on other monsters in addition to Godzilla, IDW as promised. There's a new American Godzilla movie in development right now for release sometime in 2012. There's another Stan Lee note, this time about a comic you can actually put your hands on. Well maybe Stan Lee's Soldier Zero has sold more copies than any other title in the history of Boom Studios.

Over 24,000 copies so far topping the company's previous bestseller which was part of its Farscape series. As announced last year at San Diego, Soldier Zero is the first of three Boom titles. Based on concepts by Stan, there's two more coming along, one this month and another in December.

Here's an amazing act, here's a tremendous act, here's a startling act. The amazing, the thrilling, the greatest, spectacular, incredible, exciting, wonderful, world fame, the most unusual novelty act. I know nothing, nothing! This is my gold.

In honor of this weekend's holiday, I'm going to review one of the coolest comics re-print books ever, Dick Briefers Frankenstein. You might not have heard of this one. This Frankenstein was originally published over 50 years ago and was written and drawn by a little-known genius named Dick Briefer.

His style was bright and exaggerated, his stories moody and very, very human. Don't get me wrong, these are horror stories but they're told with a wit and charm unmatched in the genre. Unfortunately, the comic was cancelled the wake of the juvenile delinquency nonsense at the time and Briefer could not work under the resultant censorship.

Lucky for us, Yo Books has released a massive hardcover volume re-printing 124 pages of Briefers Frankenstein along with a mandatory and fascinating historical essay. Craig Yo put the thing together, he's a ridiculously talented man whose love for the medium drips off of each page. I urge you to check this out and to keep it in mind for holiday presents.

This is my gold on the pop culture channel, getthepointradio.com. Well, you may not be voicing your choice in the comic store this week but at least you'll show some interest in a few titles, hopefully the ones that we have for you. The five things you need to check out when you hit the store this week and it begins with Lady Death Origins from Avatar Press.

The recreation of the character that was so huge in the 90s is now being done by Avatar and they're rebooting it with a whole trade paperback that includes some of the original stories and some different things to tie it into what they plan to do with the Lady Death on a regular basis. If you were a fan of the character back in the 90s then this is your starting point.

DC Comics Presents this week is a flesh and green lantern compilation for about eight bucks. It contains some really interesting stories including the flesh and green lantern Fast Friends miniseries that is out of print and the trade paperback even at times is hard to find.

Superboy gets his own series with the Superboy number one this week also from DC. You may want to check through that. A little more expensive, The Art of Jim Starlin' Life in Words and Pictures. One of the premier artists of the 70s and the 80s and still working today. A great collection of Jim's work beautifully packaged as always by IDW.

And finally talking about great artwork David Mack and Kabuki, also a title that has been with us from well from the 90s on until right now. And Marvel has packaged a hardcover volume of Some of the Best of David in a Kabuki Volume One that's available this week in comic stores.
