Hello, it's Mike Raub and welcome to The Point where all parts of pop culture come together. She's part lizard and part Kryptonian and all about the return of V to ABC. We sit down with Laura Vandervoort coming up. In the meantime, not some good news for Spider-Man fans on Broadway or in comic shops as well. It's the last day of the year, December 31st, 2010.

It's been a long time coming, but finally ABC brings us back V. V returns to the network with a new run of episodes in the new year and a lot of big changes as well. Laura Vandervoort, who plays Lisa, explains that one of the biggest is, well, exactly where her character's headed. She's a little bit of everything.

It's pretty crazy for my character this season, but in a great way. You know, when we left off last season, it was fairly clear what side she was choosing, but this season you know for sure. And she's going through some changes. Physically, you see more lizard skin this year, more mythology, and some characters

die. So there's quite a bit going on. Fans of the old and the new series are excited about a couple of cast changes, including the addition of Brett Harrison and of course the return of Jane Badler. It's pretty known at this point.

Jane is Anna's mother, so she's my grandmother. So she's the Queen V, and you do discover that she's still alive. And eventually, you know, my character does interact with her. I can't tell much more than that. She is a major part this season, and she does kind of guide Lisa along.

And Brett's great too. I haven't worked with him too much, but we did have a scene together, and he's wonderful. It's a great kind of sci-fi blend of different sci-fi shows with the cast. And we have Mark Singer this year as well from the original. That's going to be fun.

During a couple of small movie roles, V and of course Smallville, Laura seems pretty well entrenched in the world of science fiction. Yeah, I wouldn't say I led myself down that path, but I'm completely happy and thrilled to be here. I mean, just doing Smallville, I was cast in that, and that kind of just opened up the

sci-fi world doors. And I tend to lean towards sci-fi, I guess, a lot more you would say than others because of the way they write their females. I like to play the strong female, and sci-fi kind of lends to that, especially on V. All the female cast is independent and strong.

But yeah, I mean, sci-fi is great. I get to do the comic conventions, and the fans are really loyal and honest with you about what they like and don't like about your performances. And I would love to do any kind of genre, but sci-fi seems to be where people want to see me right now.

All that being said, in the future, as far as acting goes, has Laura ever considered changing things up a little bit, maybe being just a little more evil? You know, you ask any actor and they want to mix it up. And I have a list of things that I'd love to do in my career. But I mean, playing bad and evil is definitely a lot of fun for actresses.

And you know, I can't say that I didn't get a chance to do that this year. I guess everyone's going to have to wait and see. But yeah, Lisa's definitely on the good side right now and trying to fight for what is right. But I would love to do, you know, a period piece.

I would love to do an action film because I have my second degree Black Belt. I would love to do a really gritty TIFF film. I have a list. A lot of eyes on Smallville too this season with the series finally coming to an end in just a few months.

And the question remains as to whether Laura will be back again in that Supergirl costume. I'm not sure. I mean, I did do the episode this year already for their last season, but they left the door open for Supergirl. So I'm not sure they haven't, the phone hasn't rang to return yet.

And I know they have a few episodes left. So I don't know. Right now the heat is on V with new episodes on ABC running all the way through March. And Laura says, well, you really got to be there. You love the first season.

Honestly, I can say this from the bottom of my heart. This season has so much more going on. The characters that you love have conflicts. They have big decisions to make. Characters are working with other characters they haven't met before.

People are turning. If you think one person's on one side, they're on another. Relationships are breaking and falling apart and growing. There's some major deaths. The new characters from the original bring a whole new kind of, I don't know, whole new

aspect to our show. And I think you really got to keep an eye on Lisa after the third episode, just to keep an eye on what she's truly thinking and feeling. You can catch up on past episodes of V at ABC.com and catch the new episodes every Tuesday at nine right after No Ordinary Family on ABC.

It's the last day of the year, December 31st, 2010. Here's what's going on in pop culture. As fans of the medium, we all love it. When we get extra attention to some of our favorite comics and comic book characters, not so much so for the Spider-Man musical, which is getting attention.

None of which is really good. For example, some reviews this week, not kind at all from the Bloomberg news and news day to reviewers, broke an unwritten Broadway compact between producers and critics and reviewed the show while it was in the special critics preview that they usually hold just before big Broadway productions open.

With the understanding, reviews will be held until well after the show debuts and giving a chance for the producers to make any changes that need to be made. The news outlets in question went ahead and published your reviews, which by the way weren't kind in any way. Tack that on, of course, to all the incidents of injuries that have happened well right

up to the risk before the Christmas holiday. Not a good run for the Spider-Man musical and more than likely and not a long life in 2011. Those around the internet, especially the Dark Horse website, and you'll find some interesting previews of the upcoming revival of Dark Horse Presents.

That was a title that Dark Horse premiered back in 1986. It lasted almost 15 years with the purpose of premiering really top flight talent and new concepts and hopefully they're going to revive that very same mission when it returns in April with an 80 page issue planned for it. And again, you can catch out some of these previews if you look around on the web.

A new series by Frank Miller, a new hard-boiled cop series by Neil Adams, and finally a new chapter of concrete from Paul Chadwick. If you're unfamiliar with the history of Dark Horse Presents, well, it's where concrete began Frank Miller's Sin City, also first appeared in the title just like John Byrne's Next Men.

It's a watermark decision for the ongoing battle between digital and print comic books, a big event which transforms a major part of the Ultimate universe and involves creators like Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Millar, and others. Launches in February in print and issues of Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate Avengers versus New Ultimates as well.

And on the day it hits the comic stores, it'll also be available on the Marvel Comics app in iTunes for the iPad, the iPhone, and the iPod Touch. The question now is how will this affect store sales on what's going to be a major event in comics for 2011? Well, it seems like everybody's confused on exactly what format the Sucker Punch movie

from Zack Snyder's going to be in. I mean, over the summer, well, we thought it was going to be in 3D and then right around San Diego Zack Snyder made the announcement that it was going to be released in 2D only. He said he'd seen a bunch of the tests and the conversions and it didn't really please him, so he backed it down to 2D.

Now there are posters being released in a number of IMAX theaters about special screenings from movies in 2011 and on the list in March is a 3D Sucker Punch. No word yet from the studio or official word from Zack Snyder. May not seem like a big deal, but you have to think about what it means in the big picture. And that is that Borders, the national bookstore chain in the US here, have announced that

they're going to be delaying payments to publishers. What that means is that Borders is trying to find new ways to get financing in in order to help them stay afloat. One of the ways to do it is to break the credit terms they have with the various publishers that supply material to the stores, hopefully to restructure those so they can again continue

to get new material, but in turn have a little more cash flow as well. What it all means in the biggest and blackest of pictures, well, if Borders does go down into bankruptcy, a lot of publishers may go down with it. Many would not survive in a world of book publishing where Borders doesn't exist. The point may go.

And I'm supposed to get all sacriony and stuff. Ah, bad chance. The fact is, just about everybody I know or have read about had a year that was crappy at best. Some of us, more than a few, suffered enormous brain-chilling loss.

Our government was too busy playing Red Rover, Red Rover with each other. No truly awesome new music came out that I can recall offhand. And the only book of real importance that came out was Mark Twain's uncensored autobiography, and we've been waiting 100 years for that. A couple OK TV series, maybe one brilliant new one, and maybe a couple OK movies.

Do you know why we wish each other a happy new year? That's because we're too pissed to congratulate each other for surviving the last year. Wishing a happy new year is more than just an act of optimism. It is what we deserve. And each year, we do our best to make it so.

Let us all enjoy a happy new year, because we deserve it. This is my goal on America's true pop culture channel. Get the point. Radio.com. All the clean things we forgot and all the enzymes.

Yeah. Here's what's cool. I can remember the days when the week between Christmas and New Year's was pretty bleak in the comic stores. Not the case this week.

It's a full load on the shelves this week, and we've got our list of the top five things you should look for. Starting with the new Batman series. Again, these are tough to come by because, well, there's so many of them, and you really do, for the sake of your wallet, have to pick and choose.

That's why we always kind of send you over there to at least page through the new stuff. And this week, well, it's Batman the Dark Knight number one from DC. Also, if you've been catching the new revival of the Thunder Agents and you want to look at the early stuff, but you don't necessarily want to buy well the back issues or even the expensive archive editions, DC's put together one of their DC Comics Presents packages for

just under eight bucks. It has some really great early Thunder Agents stuff in there. This is a great paperback this week with Mark Wade and Andy Kuber's beautiful K-ZAR stuff from Marvel for the recent times. That's available for just under 20 bucks.

And a Spider-Man trade paperback featuring some of the best black hat material as well. That's a nice collection. Also, this week, Wizard Magazine with the year-end special, the one we kind of look forward to every year from Wizard. That's number 234, if you're keeping track.
