Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to The Point where all parts of pop culture come together. Alan Alda along with us to talk about some of his very favorite episodes of MASH. In the meantime, get excited. The Transporter is coming to television and you might be making a trip to the Tube as well. How'd you like to end up in an episode of Smallville? It's Monday, December 13, 2010. Let's get to The Point right now.

This is The Point, The Point radio, get The Point radio. Actor Alan Alda has the dual responsibility of being well a face familiar to all of us on television, yet somebody you don't see in new shows that often. So with a classic comedy like MASH and a current hit like 30 Rock, what difference is Alan seeing in the series? No, I think the process of those two shows is pretty much the same, but I think

my guess is, I'm not authoritative about this, but I get the impression that 30 Rock is unusual among modern shows in that it's shot on film like a movie. And that's the way we shot MASH. So it's a rhythm and a schedule that I'm used to. It's not shot in front of an audience the way many shows are with four cameras shooting the show in one go, and then they do two versions of it, and pick-ups all night long. I think that's a kind of a

process that I've never, I don't think I've ever done. And I'm used to this process. You can do things in this way of working that you can't do the other way, and vice versa. When you sit down with Alan Alda, you have to talk MASH. What episode's rank is among his favorites? I think there were about 15 or 20 shows at the top of my list, but no single favorite. I liked the most the ones where we told the story in a different way,

like the Dreams episode or the Black and White interview episode, where the camera was the eyes of the patient, the point of view from the point of view of the patient. Those shows that were very different stick out in my head because we took a risk and we shook up the format. And it always reminds me that the audience was generous with us and let us play around like that. But we had a feeling that they'd let us come back the following week,

even if they didn't go for the shift as much as we hoped they would. But as it turned out, I think that was one of the pleasures of watching the show was to see what we were going to try to do next. Plenty of classic MASH out there for you to find and some great movies with Alan as well. In the meantime, Ketch's appearance is on 30 Rock right now at NBC.com and Hulu. It's Monday, December 13th, 2010. Here's what's going on in pop culture. It was another light

weekend at the box office with Chronicles of Narnia, the voyage of the Dawn Treader, not doing even what its predecessor Golden Compass did two Decembers ago. A total of just twenty four and a half million dollars, followed by the Tourist. Also another opening this weekend at 17 million in your top three. Tangled held its own at fourteen and a half million dollars this week, bringing its overall total to just about one hundred fifteen million so far. Harry Potter

still in the top five at number four with an additional eight and a half million, just over two fifty million so far for the Harry Potter franchise. Still in the top ten to date with an additional two and a half million dollars and Mega Mind at number ten. Total so far for that one one hundred and forty million dollars. As we search down a little bit in the top twenty for some familiar titles, well, Red still hanging in again with another half million dollars there,

just under ninety million so far for that one. And the social network still in the top twenty at number twenty this week. Another two hundred and eighty thousand for that one. Total so far for the film, just over ninety million dollars. As your chance to be part of both Smallville and DC comics history, The CW is giving fans a chance to appear in an episode of Smallville on the show's tenth and final season. Now to win that coveted on air slot, you have to submit a video testimonial

as a hopeful citizen appealing to Clark about the important role he's playing in crime fighting. Clark will then see the video on the show and you'll be seen and well things will move along, hopefully as they will toward the end of this long running series. announced plans to release the Black Panther motion comic series for Marvel Knight's animation on DVD next year. The six episode series was released in the U.S. via iTunes, Xbox Live, Microsoft Zune and the PS Network as well. Now you can get it on DVD with a lot of extras, including looking back at the Black Panther music videos and more. Suggested retail price for this will be just under $15. It should be on DVD store shelves right around the 18th of January.

The transporter franchise is coming to television right now. It's being produced by a European company, but they will have a U.S. partner that has not been announced yet. It'll be a 12 part series beginning with episodes showing hopefully in the U.S. by next November. The series based on the three transporter movies and no there's no word as to whether Jason Stratham will be involved with these. You've probably already heard the news that the Doctor Who Christmas Special shows

both in England and in the U.S. on the BBC and the BBC America respectively at the same time on Christmas Day, which is good news. Now if you missed that, well the DVD edition has already been set as well. It'll be in DVD stores sometime in February. It features of course lots of different extras and the Christmas Special as well. Doctor Who A Christmas Carol will retail for just under $15 for the standard DVD and just under $20 for the Blu-ray disc in both the U.S. and Canada and

should be in both areas right around the 15th of February. Never letting an opportunity pass by, Adam West is involved in Batman again, at least painting him. West has been a cultural pop art expressionist for a while, actually even sold a few paintings over the years. Now he's had a new Beverly Hills Art Gallery opening over the past few days showing some of his rather unusual depictions of Batman, including some of the villains from the TV series and one in depicting

the meeting originally between Batman and the Green Hornet from the TV series as well. No word yet on whether anything at the gallery opening sold. In a shocking announcement, TNT has said the closer will come to an end next year at the end of the seventh season. It sure isn't a ratings problem. Every time closer episodes premiere on TNT, things happen for the network, which is important these days. No word yet on exactly what the reason is behind at the end of the series. Of

course, they are all available on DVD and there's some new episodes running soon on TNT. Here's an amazing act. Here's a tremendous act. Here's a startling act. The amazing, the thrilling, the greatest, spectacular, incredible, exciting, wonderful, world-famous, most unusual, novelty act. It seems it's signs of gold mine. I know nothing. Nothing. This is my gold and this one is pretty weird, even for weird scenes. It's also pretty cool

or pretty frightening or both. Miracle visionary caught in the spotlight. I'm a big fan of singer-songwriter Rackentour actor punk god Henry Rollins. His observations on society are fascinating and often hilarious. His talk shows are informative and involving. His performances in Sons of Anarchy and Heat are compelling. It really didn't come as a surprise to me that Henry Rollins worked with Charles Manson. You know, the murdering madman who carved

a swastika into his forehead to impress the members of his parole board. Yep, that Charles Manson. Henry just disclosed one of the songs he performed at a benefit was written by Manson. In fact, Henry helped mix down the tracks from the prison session. The record was never released because record label employees received death threats. Nobody in his right mind would mess with Henry Rollins, but Charles Manson and his family were, well, you know. This is my gold on America's true pop culture

channel. Get the point radio dot com. It begins with the revival of a great sixties title. Mighty Sampson number one this week from Dark Horse. Certainly worth a look. Showcase presents our army at war volume one. Some really beautiful vintage

Joe Kubert and Russ Heath work in this one. Nice volume. Lots to see here for under 20 bucks. Superman's Secret Origin, the Geoff Johns reboot of Superman from the early days, finally collected in a deluxe hardcover this week from DC and John Burns. Next Man number one, another book revive not quite from the sixties, but from well, almost a decade or so ago. John's doing it back again for IDW. First issue out this week, maybe worth a look through as well. And finally, a cool independent

done by a great independent artist. It's called the Devil's Panties. There's already been three volumes out. Volume four is out right now. It's not a continued strip. It's more like a cartoon strip as well. Great stuff though. And you need to check it out as well. It's from Devil's Panties, the publishing company. A lot of comic stores might not carry it, but again, try and ask or at least have them special ordered. It's well worth the time. Check out all these and more in comic
