In the Netherlands, a country surrounded by the sea, Nellie Jansen has a good job as a freelance computer programmer, an unusual but mutually loving relationship with her water-crazed partner, Bram and a precocious eight-year old daughter, Anneliese.

It looks like a good life but in a very short time, weird burns appear on Anneliese’s back, Nellie’s mother Johanna is getting terrible headaches and Nellie herself dreams of a mysterious woman made of the sea.
