Romance and Reality: The Changing Contours

As soon as human beings developed a tendency to acknowledge God or

the gods for the creation of the world and humanity itself, they developed a

sensation of being protected by The Almighty. The inception of espionage seems

to have an intimate link with this feeling of being protected. In order to protect,

God has to ‘watch’ or ‘see’ his creation constantly. The notion of God (or gods, in

case of polytheistic religions) being a permanent resident of heaven, that is, a

place located above the earth too bears a reflection of this idea about God being

the watchman for the entire creation. Though myths or religious texts from

numerous cultures and religions bear such ideas, keeping in mind, the present

discussion’s focus on Anglo-American literature, it seems proper to trace echoes

of the ideas in Christianity due to the dominance of Christianity on the Anglo-

American culture.
