Vanished Trades: Forgotten Jobs That Built the Modern World – A Graphic History

Before electricity, automation, and machines, entire cities depended on human hands.

Vanished Trades is a black-and-white graphic novel that brings to life the forgotten jobs that built the modern world-ice harvesters, switchboard operators, lamplighters, coal stokers, water carriers, and more. Through atmospheric illustrations and brief narration, each chapter captures a single trade at work, its tools, its dangers, and the moment it quietly disappeared.

These are stories of routine labor, skill learned over years, and lives shaped by work that no longer exists. Told without nostalgia or spectacle, this book honors the workers who carried cities through cold winters, dark nights, and growing industrial change-long before machines took their place.

A visual history of labor, progress, and what was lost along the way.
