A pretty slow week in comics, as everyone’s still gasping for breath post Comic-Con (including me, even though I stayed at home this year). Not even a dozen books worth reading this week, and I somehow missed the JSA annual. Still, some interesting stuff, with a strong DC showing. Book of the Week: Blue Beetle…
This week we’ll be looking at three books with main characters who look like one thing, but are something else. Nephilim, Vol. 1 By Anna Hanamaki Aurora, May 2008, $10.95 On a continent with the unlikely name of Elwestland, two political powers – with the is-it-quitting-time-on-Friday-already? names of “The Empire” and “The Federation” – are…
I had a particularly bad day after the San Diego Comic Con was over. I don’t feel like sharing nor do I feel like writing about it. There are times when I don’t trust myself with my Mac and I fear whatever I write at those times would come back to haunt me. It’s like…
Slow Storm By Danica Novgorodoff First Second, September 2008, $19.95 This is Novgorodoff’s first full-length graphic novel; she was an Eisner nominee last year for the one-shot [[[A Late Freeze]]]. She’s got an assured, pseudo-outsider art style, with big blocks of color and slablike faces, but her writing isn’t quite up to the same level…
It had to happen. The Presidential Battle spills over into the comic shops with a one-of-a-kind new set of graphic novels from IDW, plus: “Superboy” and The Legion on TV Doctor Solar and Magnus back again Make room for a stack of interesting titles from Ape Entertainment Press the Button – it’s just like casting…
Shmobots is a pretty stupid book on its face. And it’s pretty stupid inside too. Government negligence leads to a city full of worthless robots (termed [[[Shmobots]]]), and three of the laziest ones hang out with a guy and do pretty much nothing with their lives. The humore here — from writer Adam Rifkin —…
Canadian webcomic creator Ryan North’s Dinosaur Comics is another one of those projects that defies the norm in the comics world and succeeds despite all of the very good reasons why it shouldn’t. I mean, come on, folks: A series in which the art never changes, and readers just get day after day of a…
The sequence of numbers 73304-23-4153-6-96-8 sit at the top of each page of the superlative new horror graphic novel The Number by Swedish artist Thomas Ott.. Those repeated numbers create a cadence to the book, a dark rhythm drummed into readers’ heads that’s further instilled through Ott’s consistent use of four panels per page. The…
We’re back from Comic Con and ready to hit the comic shop in search of so much we saw previewed on the floor in San Diego, plus: Kal (Kumar) Penn shows us how he landed on Fox’s House Keith Giffen prepares us for this week’s visit to the DC Version Of Hell ComicMix‘s Denny O’Neil…
As many know, Comic Con International has become more about showing off secret footage of upcoming TV and Film projects than about actual comic books, and for those unable to attend this year, or the attendees who weren’t fortunate enough (or patient enough) to make it into the major halls for the presentations, we’ve put…
Essex County Vol. 3: The Country Nurse By Jeff Lemire Top Shelf, October 2008, $9.95 The finale of the “[[[Essex County]]]” trilogy – which will be available in October, so start saving your pennies now – draws together the first two graphic novels in the series, but at the expense of not being as coherent…
We at ComicMix didn’t get to too much manga news coming out of San Diego, if only because of the explosion of happenings and announcements coming out of the convention center. The folks at ComiPress come through in spades, compiling a thorough listing of manga news. Read up to your heart’s content right here.
