We noticed htmlcomics.com a while back and its, shall we say, creative interpretation of copyright law before Rich Johnston brought them a bit of extra attention– which, as we were afraid of, spiked their traffic upward even faster than it was going. So we were pleased to notice their site went down about three weeks…
Yeah, I know. Jack’s long-gone. That doesn’t mean he can’t be sued – or, at least, his estate. To be fair, Jack started it. A whole bunch of copyrights expire between 2014 and 2019, and Kirby’s estate sent notices saying those copyrights will revert to from the House That Jack Built to Jack’s actual house….
This was prompted by a Slashdot post, but consider: It’s nearly the end of 2009. If the original 1790 copyright maximum term of 28 years was still in effect, everything that had been published by 1981 would be now be in the public domain — which means most of the Marvel Universe up to Dazzler…
Pity Skynet. They rule the world of the future but can’t seem to get it right in the present. Rights to the Terminator franchise have been handed from one company to another and now Halcyon Holding Group is undergoing Chapter 11 reorganization which will affect plans for the Terminator. Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood reports…
And now, the other shoe drops. Jeff Trexler points to this New York Times piece saying that the Jack Kirby estate sent notice of copyright termination to Marvel, Disney, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures and others who have been making films and other forms of entertainment based on the characters Jack…

This LJ post from urbaniak sums it all up: I’ve enjoyed many a Jamba Juice so I was disappointed to learn that their current marketing campaign features a blatant ripoff of David Rees’s detournement classic Get Your War On. Rees, of course, is appropriating free stock images but the Jamba Juice campaign is not doing…
On March 27th, we wrote that “A long-simmering trademark dispute over who owns Famous Monsters of Filmland ended on Wednesday when a federal court in California issued a summary judgment against Ray Ferry, who had lost the trademark during a bankruptcy filing.” The ruling was actually a temporary injunction. Quoting from Philip Kim: At the…
For those who came in late: "Lady Sybilla" announced the publication of her very own sequel to "Twilight" entitled “Russet Noon.” She claimed that Stephenie Meyer had no copyright protection to her work (very wrongly). Peter David, writer of stuff, in an absolute state of whimsy*, decided that simply mockery wasn’t enough, and a long,…
If you thought Harlan was slowing down in his old age, think again. Earlier this month, Harlan Ellison sued Star Trek for royalties on merchandise derived from his Star Trek script, “City On The Edge Of Forever”. Now, in the wake of Alan Moore’s action to get Watchmen rights back from DC, he’s taken up…
The clock has reached midnight. The unthinkable has happened, and soon, so will the worst case scenario. In what may go down as the biggest sucker-punch to hit DC Comics since the Superboy lawsuit, Alan Moore has reversed his position on taking money from the film version of Watchmen. The reason is elegant and ironic;…
