I guess Marvel senior vice president David Gabriel has had a bad week. In case you haven’t heard – perhaps you were in solitary confinement – at the Marvel Retailer Summit Gabriel said that some retailers have told him that they “did not want female superheroes out there.” I have no doubt this is true:…
Saying a lot happened in the world of comics this past week is a gross understatement. Between MoCCA Fest in the east, WonderCon in the west, the poor performance of the Ghost In The Shell live action remake, and the reports coming out of the Marvel Retailer Summit, I could have column fodder well into…
One of the most exciting developments in the comic book industry in my lifetime has been the increased diversity, both in content and in creators. It is no longer a given that only straight cis white men can be writers, artists, or heroes. It’s something we champion here at ComicMix. Many of our contributors…
In the past, many writers on this site, myself included, have written columns shining a light on the abused state of minority characters at the Big Two. While I agree with everything said, I think that we have left out the very important point of creating new characters. For the past decade or so, it’s…
This week, I want to write about something I didnÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂt do. ItÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs a good thing. Rally. Trust me. Last Friday I read this itemÃÂÃÂÃÂàin The New York Times about a black comic book festival to be held on Saturday at the Schomburg Center in Harlem. Since I aspire to experience new things (and because,…
As many of you may know, last week was the release of Batgirl #45, the issue in which Barbara’s former roommate/good friend Alysia Yeoh gets married to her lover, Jo. The resulting wedding was the first time in mainstream comics that a transgender woman got married. Googling this will lead you to a slew of…
Like many of the contributors on ComicMix, I spent the other week at New York Comic Con. In a continuing trend, attendance keeps going up with a greater representation of the general population, and with that, more programming centered around diversity. Diversity in comics has been an important topic to me for years. Important to…
A few friends of mine on Facebook posted an absolutely fabulous op-ed by J.A. Micheline, calling out Marvel – and declaring a personal boycott – for some recent decisions passed. It seems Blade has been handed off to a pair of white creators, Hercules is now straight as an arrow, and I assume Spider-Gwen will…
http://thedissolve.com/features/exposition/618-were-losing-all-our-strong-female-characters-to-tr/ Many modern action movies, including How To Train Your Dragon 2, are visibly trying to make their female characters more than trophies and are only making them set pieces…
http://emeraldcitycomicon.tumblr.com/post/85161983740/as-you-may-remember-we-asked-emerald-city-comicon As you may remember, we asked Emerald City Comicon attendees to fill out a survey after this year’s show, to get a better idea of what worked, what didn’t, and who are attendees are. The majority of the data we received will remain private to our team, but we thought this piece of information…
If you’ve been following my columns this month here and here, you know I’m on a tirade. I don’t like it that women are still considered an afterthought in the comics industry, especially as our industry is represented at comics and pop culture conventions. And so, I want to shine a spotlight on various shows,…
It’s Black History Month! Here’s a list of some of what’s happening in comics to celebrate the annual spotlight on Black America! Let’s see now… Over at the fantastic website Comic Book Resources (CBR) my friend and Milestone Media alumni Joe Illidge is doing a wonderful series of articles called The Color Barrier. I just…
