Last year Marvel made big news with the Black Avengers book they are doing or have done or will be doing. Truth is I don’t know if it’s been done or not because these days I rarely read comics that get massive press. Unless I know the creator I’d rather pass on hype – especially…
Closing them on my desktop so you can open them on yours. Here we go: Trading on Charlie Brown’s good name: What a cheap ripoff. I Am So Very Tired: I am tired, not of arguing in favour of equality, diversity and tolerance, but of having to explain, over and over and over again, why…
From the very second we announced Milestone in 1992 to today, there have been those who simply hate us. Chief among our haters are a small but vocal group of black comic book creators. Back in the good old days we were just called house niggers and we were hated because DC Comics owned us….
“I think it would be tricky to have one member of the Storm family black and one white. Is he adopted? I don’t know how you would play that.” – Mark Millar “ This speech is my recital, I think it’s very vitalTo rock (a rhyme), that’s right (on time) It’s Tricky is…
I’m not a Communist. I’m not a Marxist, unless you count Groucho. And I’m certainly not a Maoist. However, I’ve always enjoyed quoting this passage from Mao’s Little Red Book: “Let a hundred flowers bloom; let a hundred schools of thought contend.” I’ve always heard that as a call for diversity, not only of opinion…

From the moment the Black Avengers was announced I’ve been asked over and over again what I think. I think a few things… I think anytime there is a serious attempt to bring not just African American but any minority characters to the forefront is a good thing. I pitched a project a year ago…
It’s a modern meme that geeks are guys, and tech nerds are guys, and that first adapters are guys. Girls are more interested in gossip and romance and shoes. All guys are Sheldon Cooper. All girls are Kim Kardashian. Needless to say, none of this is true. Not only is it a ridiculous exaggeration (which…
There is an unwritten law in the black community: support black projects in the arts, especially film and television ventures. The thinking is if we don’t support them then it will be that much harder to get another project made with black stories as the draw. It’s hard as shit to get a black project…
While I was out of the country, there was apparently a media kerfuffle about the introduction of a transgender character in the pages of Gail Simone’s Batgirl. There were stories in the LGBT press, in USA Today, and on comics sites (here) (and here too). A lot of these stories said that this was the…
