The award, now in its 13th year, honors the memory of Joseph Brooke Baker (1940-1991) a dedicated supporter of the library and a supporter of the library as a…
Editorial cartoonist Ted Rall and animator David Essman have released a hilarious, vicious parody of GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin to celebrate Election Day 2008. Distributed for free on YouTube and at tedrall.com, "Death Cab for Palin" is an animated political cartoon that lampoons Sarah Palin’s presidential ambitions. Noting that vice presidents frequently become…
When you realize the fact that everything changes and find your composure in it, there you find yourself in nirvana. – Shunryu Suzuki Because I’m a sorta-kinda Buddhist (without portfolio) and, if that isn’t enough, because I’m an eager believer in evolution, I guess I can’t lament, much, that this is our last visit together….
As an occasional Star Trek author, there are days when I have cursed Paramount’s licensing department for saying that you can’t do this with that character, or saying that Klingons aren’t warlike, or that Federation officers never disobey orders, or any other sort of restriction that seems arbitrary and picky that wrecks a perfectly good…
Something is going on in comic books. Have you noticed? It’s been happening for a few years now. For some reason, certain comics are not making sense with the rest of the established universe and history. For some reason, things that don’t make sense have been running rampant throughout the fictional realities of DC and…
I’m not a joiner. I’m too much of an asshole to belong to any organization. I have no patience for debates when it comes to making a decision. I hate focus groups and polls. I would rather live and die by my own choices without the benefit of a vote. I know, I know. I…
It’s been a good week for cartoonist / columnist / bon vivant Ted Rall. The Mad Magazine regular and incendiary editorial cartoonist was named president of the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists. GIven how some newspapers are dropping their local editorial cartoonists in an organized effort to trim down their page count while chasing away their…
We’re all familiar with the story of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. They created Superman but nobody would buy it so it sat in a drawer for a few years until an editor remembered seeing the submission and thought it would fill out the first issue of a new title that was lacking a lead…
I just had a sobering realization that this month is my twentieth anniversary of working in comic books professionally. Gah. I was in college, between my freshman and sophmore year and my summer job in the city had just gone bye-bye. I started looking for internships, and decided to give DC Comics a shot– even…
Artist Dusty Higgins recently sent over what is pretty much the coolest thing since the wheel made of sliced bread: a wedding program drawn as a comic book. Did I mention the bride and groom fight ninjas? In addition to being an editorial cartoonist and illustrator, Dusty draws some comics. So, naturally, when his wedding…
There are no shortage of reminders of the lack of attention span in today’s culture, so it shouldn’t come as any surprise that there’s already some murmurings that “geek chick” has “jumped the shark.” At the very least, those are two phrases that are well beyond cliché. The Hollywood Reporter gives some thought to the…
There’s been quite the hub-bub over artist Barry Blitt’s recent New Yorker cover featuring presidential candidate Barack Obama dressed in traditional Muslim garb and surrounded by various jingo-tastic symbols in the Oval Office, and you can catch up on some of the debate via ComicMix Editor-in-Chief Mike Gold’s recent column, "We Will Think For You."…
