Manga Friday continues to go backwards and forwards at the same time; this week, I read the first volumes of two very popular and long-running series, and the latest volume of Path of the Assassin, a lesser-known samurai series from the creators of Lone Wolf & Cub. Our theme this week is young love…but this…
Looks like Valerie D’Orazio is starting her new term as President of Friends of Lulu with a bang. Along with the Ormes Society (and the equally wonderful Cheryl Lynn Eaton), the group is sponsorting a panel, "Women of Color in Comics and Manga." On the panel: Alitha Martinez (Iron Man, Thor, Yume and Ever), Jenny…
This week, Manga Friday heads into the past…sort of. I picked up the first volume of two extremely popular manga series, to see what they’re all about. But we’ll start with something even less likely. Siku is the pseudonym for a British cartoonist of Nigerian heritage who’s worked extensively in the British comics industry for…
Only two books for Manga Friday this week; the deadline crept up on me and found me with a smaller “read” pile than I expected. But they’re both pretty good, and both are brand-new, which may make up for it. First is Alice on Deadlines, which is the first time I’ve hit a concentrated dose…
Welcome to the second week of Manga Round-Up! This time, we have four more books from [[[Del Rey Manga]]] – all first volumes in series, as new-reader-friendly as it’s possible to be – which are aimed at a slightly older audience (sixteen and up) than the books I looked at last week. And you know…
Well, duh. That was my first reaction when I read USA Today’s story regarding Manga’s loosening grip on readers in Japan. After all, we lived through it in America starting some 30 years ago, where three things happened around mid-decade: Cable television was introduced and began snaking through the country, suddenly captivating television watchers and…
Let me be honest: I don’t know all that much about manga. I’ve read a few series (going back to Area 88 and Kamui, twenty years ago during the first attempt to bring manga to the US), but I’ve never really gone really deeply into the field. Well, I’m hoping to remedy that now. I’ve…
Two of our comic friends’ posts follow up on news we reported here earlier on two ongoing contests. Becky Cloonan notes that she was selected as one of the 18 finalists in the first-ever International Manga Awards, first mentioned on ComicMix back on May 25. Way to go, Becky! The winners are listed at the…
DC Comics caused a bit of a ruckus late last year when they announced their new Minx line of comics. Minx was avowedly an attempt to drag the large audience – mostly young, mostly female – for translated Japanese [[[manga]]] back to American creators by giving them books in formats and styles similar to manga….
Three words you never expected to see all at once: KISS. yaoi. manga. Our illustration today is, I’m afraid, only the beginning… [via Journalista!] Chris’s Invincible Super-Blog not only reviews a bunch of new comics, but also has a picture of Jughead with a jetpack. Speaking of Jugheads, the Joplin Independent is in love with…
Like Ode to Kirihito, this is a major graphic novel by Osamu Tezuka, creator of Astro Boy and “godfather of manga,” translated and published in English by Vertical Publishing. I won’t repeat the background here, but you click to the earlier review if you like. (I’ll just wait for you to get back.) Apollo’s Song…
On the west coast, San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum is debuting an exhibit on Osamu Tezuka tomorrow. Creating over 700 manga titles during his lifetime, he is best known in the West for his cartoons of Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion. His prolific manga work contains two main streams: manga ‘comic pictures’ for…
