In 1973, as most super-hero series faded from Saturday morning memory, ABC introduced the Justice League of America under the more kid friendly name [[[Super Friends]]]. Until 1986 the series evolved but continued to be a network fixture with one series break, absent the 1984-1984 season. It was at that point production company Hanna-Barbera had…
As the 1970s dawned, I was 12 and no longer as interested in Saturday morning fare. There was Little League which was either in the morning or afternoon and I found myself drifting more towards the [[[Bowery Boys]]] shorts that ran on channel 5 after the cartoons wore themselves out. My younger siblings watched, but…
Back in the days after the dinosaurs died out, Saturday mornings meant all three networks would run children’s programming from as early as 7:30 until noon or so. Every fall, as we started a new school year, we eagerly anticipated what new animated fare there might be and were mesmerized by the cartoon antics of…
We were all kids once and, let’s face it, for many of us there was a particular television show or short that caught our attention and grabbed our inner-geek by the shoulders to shout “Look at me!” Whether you had a particular fondness for Interplanet Janet (“She’s a galaxy girl!”), Underdog, or Super Grover, chances…

On a Saturday in 1973 at about 8:56 in the morning, right after Super Friends on ABC, kids were introduced to a new hero, Zero. This was the first appearance of Multiplication Rock, brought to you by Nabisco ("You’ll find quality in our corner"). It was the beginning of Schoolhouse Rock, which taught millions of…
37 years ago today, Josie and the Pussycats premiered in ABC’s Saturday morning lineup. Based upon the Archie Comics series of the same name created by Dan DeCarlo (and based on Dan’s wife, Josie) Josie and the Pussycats featured an all-girl pop music band that toured the world with their entourage, getting mixed up in…
Here’s an esoteric one for you– if you remember the sub-sub-basement of the Leo Dullo computer company, and the hapless Marlo who worked there, then you remember that after that five o’clock whistle blew, he’d hang out with a machine he brought to life, the Magic Movie Machine. Marlo and the Magic Movie Machine ran…
Twenty-three years ago today, Hasbro brought the Autobots and Decepticons to store shelves all across America. Initially reusing previously-released toys from the Japanese Takara toylines Diaclone and Microman, Hasbro issued the toys under the name Transformers. The basic back-story of the toyline and subsequent comic books and cartoons was developed by the Marvel Comics writers…
