‘KISS 4K’ Goes Digital

KISS 4K, Platinum Studios’ comic about the magical adventures of the rock band KISS (adventures which, surprisingly, didn’t involve many groupies), will be leaving the world of comic shops and heading exclusively to cyberspace.

While 4K‘s main story was told in print, webcomic site DrunkDuck.com had featured back-up stories that tied into the print series.

According to DrunkDuck.com’s Adam Black:

The second story was available here, at my humble little webcomic site on Drunk Duck. The webcomic existed to tell backstories about the previous incarnations of the 4K spirits, and we took them a month at a time, starting with Casanova, then moving on to Yoshiie, Constantine and Shaka. I also snuck in a little Christmas special, which seemed to go over well with everyone.

All, as of today, all that’s changed. The two have merged into one. The storyline from the print comic will now be told here, exclusively. There’ll be no more backstories or side-stories–those have all been told. So, when you’re done reading issue 6 and are ready for issue 7, you don’t drive to your friendly neighborhood comic shop. You come here.

So why the move? Dan Forcey, VP of Content Development at Platinum provided the following explanation in a news posting on the official KISS website:

The print book has been selling really well for us here at Platinum and we’re very excited about it. There are several reasons why we’re doing this.

First and foremost is that Gene, Paul and Scott (Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, CEO of Platinum Studios) are trend-setters and usually at the forefront of what is hot. (KISS was in comics back in the 70’s, thirty years before a lot of rock stars like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and all the other bands "discovering" the comics medium right now.) Scott and Gene both see the world moving towards the digital distribution, like DD and websites like Wowio (hint, hint), and they want to be on the trailblazers like they always have been.(Remember when everyone said iTunes wouldn’t work?)

Secondly, Gene and Paul plain love Adam’s work and want HIM to be the vision that guides 4K from here on out. You guys may not know this, but Gene and Paul both insist on their approval over every printed page of KISS 4K, but they let Adam, and only Adam, do what he wants on the title here online. Actually, I’m kind of jealous of the guy sometimes because they give him more free reign than me. :-)

New KISS4K pages will be published Monday, Wednesday and Friday spreading over two months for the complete issue. The first page is scheduled to come out the evening of March 5.

New ‘Watchmen’ Pictures Debut

Zack Snyder is a giving man. Not only is he trying his best to stay faithful to the source material in his adaptation of Watchmen, but he keeps the fans informed as well.

Continuing his tradition of giving, Snyder has posted large pictures of The Comedian, Rorschach, Silk Spectre, Nite Owl and Ozymandias on his production blog.

We’re still one year away from Watchmen hitting theaters, but that doesn’t mean we can’t whip ourselves into a frenzy by looking at brand new pictures of the film’s characters.

Gazing upon these pictures will probably make the wait for the movie that much harder, but you know you lack the willpower to resist clicking the link. Just note that if you look at the pictures, Alan Moore will personally come to your house and punch you.

Rumor: New ‘Doctor Who’ Doctor and New Cast for ‘Torchwood’?

SciFi Pulse is reporting rumors of major changes in the works for two of the BBC’s most popular sci-fi series, Doctor Who and Torchwood. These changes include a complete cast overhaul for Torchwood, and rumors about the future of both David Tennant, the current Doctor in Doctor Who, as well as his most recent companion, played by Catherine Tate.

If any aspects of the rumors are true, they’re pretty much the definition of the word "spoiler" — so consider yourself warned!

In order to give the spoiler-phobic among ComicMix readers a fighting a chance at avoidance, I’ve posted some details about the revelations after the jump.

On This Day: Garth (a.k.a. ‘Tempest’)

tempest_garth-9720928

Born on March 6, Garth had a difficult childhood. The son of King Thar and Queen Bera of the Idyllists (a colony of Atlantis, located in the Hidden Valley), Garth was exiled and sentenced to death at birth because of a mystic prophecy. Somehow he survived and lived alone for many years beneath the waves before finally meeting Aquaman.

Garth became the underwater hero’s sidekick, Aqualad, and later joined the Teen Titans. Years later, after the two had a falling out, Garth was trained by Aquaman’s father Atlan, who unleashed Garth’s full mystic potential. Garth renamed himself "Tempest" and defeated his necromancer uncle, Slizzath, in an attempt to transform the Hidden Valley into a necropolis.

Since then, Garth has been an ambassador to the United Nations, a husband (to the heroine Dolphin), a father, and a Teen Titan, and has reconciled with Aquaman. Currently, Garth is powerless and searching for his family—here’s hoping he finds them before his next birthday!

Kim 2008, by John Ostrander

kim-and-nettie-in-hammock-copy-8808789This week’s marks eleven years since the passing of my late wife, Kimberly Yale. The best way to remember people, I’ve found, is through stories – stories you know or stories you’ve heard. Story is what I do. So here are some of the stories by which I remember Kim.

Kim and I had known each other quite a while before we started dating or became a couple. In point of fact, before Kim and I started dating, I had given up on the ritual. It simply had gotten too painful. I was well into my thirties at that point and none of my relationships had lasted more than six months. The common variable in that equation seemed to be me so I just assumed I was never going to find someone. I had not gone on a date for maybe eighteen months prior to Kim’s and my starting up.

In fact, Kim had earlier been one of those who had shot down whatever overture I was making. I had gotten back from a business trip to England and picked up a Doctor Who tchotke or two that I thought she would like. I called her up, said I was coming over to her apartment, and headed over in vague hopes of maybe possibly something might happen. Kim and I were more acquaintances than anything else at this point.

Rumor: Who is Making the ‘Dark Knight’ Videogame?

dark_knight-6581738As sure as peanut butter and jelly, when a big-budget summer movie comes out, there’s usually a videogame tie-in. Images and footage of the Iron Man movie game have made the rounds as early as last July’s Electronic Entertainment Expo and San Diego Comic-Con. But we’ve heard nothing about the game based on the upcoming The Dark Knight movie — which is odd, given that Batman Begins sold well and received decent reviews.

Posters on the DC Comics message boards have wondered the same thing. The speculation is that Electronic Arts will once again publish the game based on Christian Bale’s version of the Caped Crusader. EA recently acquired developer Pandemic Studios, who’ve bucked the industry trend by producing decent licensed games (such as the Star Wars: Battlefront series). While searching Pandemic’s site, you can find a page recruiting for people to work on a mysterious "Project B."

"B" as in "Batman," maybe?

"Somewhere out there, someone’s working on my game."

‘Dragonball’ Movie Slips to 2009

The live-action adaptation of Dragonball, originally set to be released on August 15, 2008, has been pushed back to April 3, 2009.

20th Century Fox has moved the film from the busy tail end of this year’s summer movie season to the beginning of next year’s, where it currently faces no competition. The nature of the box office is sure to change that situation, but for now movies like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Wild Child can rest easy knowing they won’t have to compete against super saiyans.

The film’s story follows Goku as he races against time to collect those precious, precious dragonballs before the evil Lord Piccolo can get his hands on them. Lots of screaming and punching are involved.

Dragonball stars Justin Chatwin as Goku, Emmy Rossum as Bulma, James Marsters as Piccolo and Chow Yun-Fat as Master Roshi and is directed by James Wong (Final Destination, The One).

New ‘X-Files 2’ Set Photos Hit the ‘Net

In what will surely have X-Files fans reacting with a huge range of emotions including excitement, fear, anger and shock, new photos posted today from the set of X-Files 2 reveal that somewhere during the film Mulder and Scully will finally express affection for each other the old-fashioned way: with a kiss.

These new photos, posted at the X-Files News site were taken in Vancouver while the cast and crew were busy working on the film. Including the aforementioned kiss, there are also shots of David Duchovny giving his co-star Gillian Anderson a big hug after the kiss scene and Writer/Director Chris Carter leading the cheers of the crew after calling cut on what was probably a monumental moment in X-Files history.

To be honest, I was expecting something like this from the new film. At some point you can’t tease fans anymore or they will start to resent it. Eventually, you have to let them see what they really want to see and have been hoping for all these years: the believer and the skeptic together at last.

X-Files 2 hits theaters on July 25th.

Alternate ‘I Am Legend’ Movie Ending Leaked Online

Say what you will about the film I am Legend. You’re either a huge fan of the Richard Matheson novella and you hated the movie or you love Will Smith and he can do no wrong — or maybe, like me, you’re somewhere in the middle. I’ve always loved the Matheson story and I also liked the movie. Well, at least until the third act and the ending, which didn’t work for me at all.

Well, once again, thanks to the power of the Internets (via SlashFilm), we can now experience an alternative ending for the film not shown in theaters. This ending, certainly a more upbeat one, was most-likely shown during its original test screenings before release. It probably didin’t test well with audiences, for whatever reason, so the ending shown in theaters was used instead.

If you haven’t seen the film already, you might not want to watch this as it will certainly contain spoilers. If you have seen the movie and were let down by the third act as I was, then this ending might be the one you were hoping for all along.

Either way, enjoy.

UPDATE: It looks like this one is being taken down faster than anyone can post it. We’ll try to find a more stable version of the video, but in the meantime I’ve provided a quick synopsis of what was in the video in the comments thread for this article. – RM

UPDATE: Looks like some enterprising person has posted the ending here. Get it while its hot.
