Hi, it's Mike Raub and she's part Indiana Jones, part Nancy Drew, and she's already in the movies. Sound interesting? We'll tell you all about that in a couple of minutes right here on… August 28th, 2008! ComicMix News! There was a surprise, at least to some, when Virgin Comics, the two-year-old venture between the Virgin Group and India's comic publisher Gotham Entertainment, closed its U.S. offices in New York.
That according to a story in Publishers Weekly. An insider's statement said the group was planning to restructure and relocate to L.A. in the near future. This is a little bit different sellout. Amazing Spider-Man number 569, which you probably haven't read yet. You may not even have picked up because it just hit the comic stores yesterday.
It is now sold out, at least at the retail level. It's the second part of the new anticipated, new ways to die storyline that is the first appearance, of course, of the new anti-venom. At this point, Marvel is not planning a second printing of Spider-Man 569, but I would look for some changes in that news in the days to come. Here's a quickie about Torchwood. It's official, the new season, as short as it is, and now has its own title.
It'll be called Torchwood, Children of the Earth. It's begun filming, as you've already heard, for the third season right now in Wales. It will premiere in the U.S. and on BBC in the U.K. in the early part of 2009. And again, it will only run five episodes for this season. Meanwhile, season two of Torchwood, which is a lot longer than that.
It's a five-disc DVD set, and it's available in a couple of weeks here in the U.S. I assume these series are all backups, but ABC has announced five new programs that they are putting into production, but they aren't on their regular schedule, at least so far, for this new TV season. It includes Cupid. It's a remake from Rob Thomas at the show he had back in the 90s, and at that time,
star Jeremy Piven, about a guy who actually thinks he's Cupid. Better Off Ted, starring Jay Harrington, who's an office worker who plans to move up in his corporation. Single With Parents, starring Alyssa Milano, and also a new police drama called Castle, starring Nathan Fillion, from Firefly. He's a novelist who helps the NYPD solve murder cases.
And then there's the Unusualz, an ensemble show set within the NYPD, about a crazy precinct that sounds a little like Barney Miller. Again, these shows not on their regular schedule, but are planned to debut sometime during the 2008-2009 TV season. The major convention season's just about ready to draw to a close, but everyone's already looking ahead with some special guest announcements for some upcoming conventions.
Beginning with Wizard World, Texas, it takes place November 7th to the 9th at the Arlington Convention Center. And the guest of honor will be John Cassidy, creator from the Lone Ranger, and a number of other projects as well. Meanwhile, legendary artist George Perez is a special guest of honor at next year's MegaCon 2009. That'll be held, of course, in Florida, coming up in the spring of next year. Girls in Danger, Tamsos in Distress, that's been a major part of comics, well, pretty much since day one.
And it's business as usual for a new series done with a little bit different twist from Atlanta Studios. The name of the book is Paula Perle, and creator James Watson explains it all. Paula Perle, that's one of our most popular series. It's kind of an update of Nancy Drew, who meets Pauline, Perles of Pauline meets Indiana Jones. So, we're a most popular series. We've got three issues out. We're working on issue four right now.
Hope to have all six done by the end of the year. So where did the concept come from? The concept came from all the adventure comics I read when I was a kid. I was a guy, but I read Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys and that kind of stuff. I love the idea of the cliffhanger, the pulp inspiration that came from, the Girls in Danger, the great mystery you have to solve.
It's just a fun comic. I wanted to do something that wasn't too serious, but a lot of fun to read and to do. Skipping a few of the usual steps besides being in comics, Paula has also made it already to DVD. We do. We're testing out some things. We can put the character on film, live action, but the live action videos are original adventures that you don't see in the comic. So to really get all of Paula's adventures, you've got to buy both the films and the comics. So is it tough to find actresses to portray Paula?
To work on the video, it was actually not too tough because a lot of girls read the comics and they said, yeah, I'd love to do that. It's a strong action heroine character, but she gets in a lot of trouble. So you've got to have the right look. It was the last Thursday of the month and that meant when we headed down to the drugstore, we would get our favorites, which were Action Comics number 317 and the Rainbow Faces of Superman. Along with that, at this time of the month, we always got Adventure Comics, this time with Allegiant Story, where Lex Luthor met the Legion of Super Heroes. And the new look was rolling along in Detective Comics number 332, which had the very first new look appearance of the Joker. We also picked up Lois Lane number 52, Metal Man number 10, and a couple of great warboats, our army at war number 147 and our fighting forces number 87. Marvel gave us Journey into Mystery number 109, which had Thor meeting Magneto.
We got Strange Tales number 126, of course, with the Human Torch and Doctor Strange Stories. Tales of Suspense number 59, which gave us a hint that Captain America was going to be moving in with Iron Man. And we got Two Gun Kid number 72. From ACG, there was the Incredibly Odd Ball, but a lot more fun when we grew up and read it again. Hurry number five. And from Charlton Comics, the bad version of the Blue Beetle, this time up to issue number three. 1964.
In the news, a weekend Hurricane Cleo limped through Cape Kennedy as the once dangerous storm began to head north. As the Democratic Convention came to a close, nominees Lyndon Baines Johnson and Hubert Humphrey hit the campaign trail, and comedian Gracie Allen died of a heart attack at the age of 58. In the movies, there was One Betated Two, Peter Sellers was shining at a shot in the dark. There was the Carpetbaggers, Robin and the Seven Hoods, but just like on the radio, these guys dominated the theaters as well.
It's been a hard day's night, and I've been working like a dog. It's been a hard day's night. I should be sleeping like a love. Glad to say it's still in my all-time top 10, The Beatles and A Hard Day's Night. TV Tonight had episodes of something called Destiny Rides Again. There was the Bob Hope Theater, a Jack Parr special, an episode of Burt's Law and… … Yep, those two guys rolling down the road for a couple of seasons on CBS in something called Route 66.
On the radio was an American singer and songwriter, a Grammy Award winner, and a guy who was in the middle of a career that would span over four decades. 1964! This month he was going head to head with the British Invasion, and he beat him hands down with a song that went to number one not only here, but in the UK as well.
