ComicMix Radio: The Hulk Goes Six For Six

The myth's blowing but the Hulk goes six for six. Hi, it's Mike Raub on ComicMix Radio, back in business in Baltimore with another big sellout for Marvel Comics, as well as some real interesting things and some key titles you're not going to want to miss in the comic stores this week. Grab the wallet, get ready, we are on the way.

It's not necessarily incredible when comics sell out these days, even though we do like to make note of it, but when six issues in a row of a new series all blow out the door, that's kind of interesting, and once again the new series of Hulk for Marvel has done that. Issue number six is gone, this time Marvel says they are not going back to press instead.

Just around the corner is Hulk volume one, the Red Hulk premiere hardcover. That will be in comic stores right around the 5th of November or so. Talk to your retailer to make sure that he's going to stock that. Farland Toys has announced extensive new product lineups for 2009, lots of things going on in both the Halo and Guitar Hero universes.

It begins in January with Halo 2009, Wave number one, and then the Halo Haroey Collection. 2009 follows after that in January, as well as the Guitar Hero 2009 mix and match guitars that allow you to build and customize your own guitars in a variety of styles. Then in February, more Halo with the Hunter Action Deluxe figure, the Halo Helm with three packs, and more Guitar Hero 2009 as well.

It continues with new Guitar Hero and new Halo product every month all the way through June for McFarland Toys. In case you missed it, it's deal number three for Mark Millar, who now has War Heroes in Progress as an upcoming movie. As you know, of course, Kickass is being produced right now.

Wanted was out from Mark earlier in the summer. Now, a real director, cast, or release date yet announced though for War Heroes that will be around the corner though. And from our list of cool things to waste time with when you're online, the always sunny in Philadelphia website sure fits up there.

The cool series from Fox has an even cooler new mashup trailer due to help promote the series and give you a chance to take some of the outtakes and make your own funny stuff. A kind of an interesting week this one is, only because A, it's sort of a catch up week for some publishers with a few key titles and some really interesting books that'll be avoiding down the line coming into the stores, as well as a fact that right around the corner it's the beginning of October and the sweet bit of the Christmas season for retailers and publishers as well.

A short list for Dark Horse this week, there's the Gant straight paper bag volume 2 from them. And from DC, the alcoholic hardcover this week, Army at War, The Art of War number 3 which is a 6 issue mini series, Authority number 3, and then our first best bet. If anything is going to take place in the Batman R.I.P. storyline, this should be the

key book. It is Batman number 680 this week which also comes with a variant edition. For the all ages group, there's Batman Strikes number 50, DC Universe Decisions number 2, as a 4 issue series. El Diablo hits issue 2 as well, that'll be a 6 issue series.

The Hellblazers spin off, Chazz the Knowledge hits number 4, that's a 5 issue run. There's House of Mystery number 6 from Vertigo, Jonah Hex number 36. Justice League of America hits number 25 this week, Mark Andre Goz, Manhunter number 35, also along this week as well. Another piece in the Batman R.I.P. storyline this week from Nightwing in issue number 149,

and then our second best bet also from DC. Another piece of the foundation of the building, or the rebuilding we should say, of the Superman Universe begins with the addition of Sterling Gates and Jamal Eigle as the new creative team on Supergirl with issue number 34 this week. That's also a key issue in the life and the career of artist Jamal Eigle who's been a

Superman fan most of his life. Superman, because I grew up on Superman, Superman's been my favorite character since I was like four years old. For me he always personified the truth, justice, fair play, everything to supposedly write with the world.

Supergirl 34 also comes with a variant cover this week, be sure to check with your retailer on that one. There's the first issue of Terror Titans as part of what's going on in the Titans universe. This will be a six issue series when it's gone. Back to the top ten universe for top ten season two this week.

The first issue begins what will be a four issue miniseries there. Tor winds up with the sixth issue of that miniseries. There's Trinity number 18 this week of course from DC. And finally Vixen, Return of the Lion, another miniseries based out of JLA. This will be a five issue series when it's done from DC.

Some interesting eye candy this week from Devil's Dew publishing the covers of Dungeons and Dragons comics all contained in one big hardcover collection. Really beautiful. Speaking of that same series there's Forgotten Realms and other great paper back in this run.

The Dark Elf trilogy Omnibus begins with volume one from Devil's Dew. There's Odd Squad number two which comes with a couple of different covers. Voltron, a legend, Forge number three. And again the Worlds of Dungeons and Dragons. This is issue four of that also with a couple of different covers from Devil's Dew.

From Dynamic Forces there's Army of Darkness number 13, Battlestar Galactica Origins number ten and our next best bet. Can't miss with any issue with the boys. We're up to number 23. This one also has a variant cover by John Cassidy.

There's also the boys trade paperback continuing some of the things you might have missed. Volume three this week is available from Dynamic Forces as well as The Man with No Name number four. From Image Comics 4 Eyes number one. This has a couple of different covers.

Some which may be hard to find. Talk to your retailer about those. There's Invincible number 53, The Red Mask from Mars miniseries continues. This is issue two of a four issue run. Savage Dragon hits number 138 and Witchblade hits number 121 from Image and then there's

Zero G number one which will be a four issue miniseries. From Marvel this week, Second Printing Variant kicks it off with one that's a tied-in to Spider-Man. Amazing Spider-Man number 569 the variant there out this week. If you're lucky enough to find it from Marvel.

Also this week, The American Dream trade paperback beyond courage. Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Laughing Corpse number one hits this week. That'll be five issues when it's done. Civil War House of M continues with the second issue of that. That'll be five issues when it's over.

There's Eternals number five which also has a zombie variant this week. There's Marvel Apes number three. You know what that means. There's a variant on that one. This one by Sal and John Buscemi that you may want to check out.

For the All Ages group there's Marvel Two and One number 16 and the Marvel zombies get collected into trade paperback with three particular covers. One featuring Hulk, Iron Man and one featuring Spider-Man. There's New Exiles number 12 this week. The Punisher trade paperback from first to last.

Also another issue of Punisher War Journal. This time a Secret Invasion tie-in. It's issue number 24. Spider-Man magazine again for the All Ages group. That hits issue number three.

The second issue of the Submariner miniseries. Submariner Depths comes out this week. That'll be five issues when it's done. The Venom Dark Origin miniseries continues with the third issue and that's a five issue run from Marvel.

And we wind it up with one of our favorites from tomorrow's Alder Ego number 81 this week. They say the best weapon is one you never have to fire. I prefer the weapon. You only need to fire once.

That's how Dad did it. That's how America does it. And it's worked out pretty well so far. You're as ready for it as we are. You're probably already in line at your local Best Buy to Grab It.

Iron Man hits DVD this week with a couple of different versions. The one you really want to care about is the special edition packed with tons of great stuff. Not too far behind that in the sales department this week is Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Again, two versions of this one as well.

The unrated and the rated versions. Also a direct to DVD Chapter 27. Great performance by Jared Leto there. Taxi to the Dark Side. There's Rest Stop this week.

An interesting film on the use of steroids in sports, both in wrestling and other sports as well. Bigger, stronger, faster. That's out this week. And if you dare, how about a visit to the minescape of Alan Moore this week on DVD.

Too many easy jokes there. We're going to pass on all of them. As far as the special editions and repackages go, one of my favorite movies and probably one of the ones that's way overlooked from the 90s. One called Can't Hardly Wait.

Great soundtrack and great performances by Seth Green and Jennifer Love Hewitt among others. If you get a chance to grab it, you really should. Also repackage in Blu-ray this week. There are special editions of Daredevil, the 40 year old version.

There's the new version of Knocked Up in Blu-ray as well as the sixth sense, Land of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead, The Thing and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre as well. From TV, well, let's slow down just a little bit this week. We get season four of Numbers, season two of the classic Adam 12 and season three of My Name is Earl.

If you were a Superman fan, you sure knew what the last week of the month meant to you. When you ran down to the drugstore, you got Action Comics number 330, which was an all magic issue featuring both Superman and Supergirl. Adventure Comics number 338 with another Legion of Superhero story and the Time Trapper 2.

End of the month also meant Detective Comics, this time number 345 in the early days of the new look. This time introducing Blockbuster. Black Hawk number 214 came along this week. Another big war classic from DC was Captain Storm number 10.

It was Rip Hunter Time Master number 29 and Sea Devils number 26. Both titles almost at the end of their run. For Marvel, this week meant that the double feature books were going to be on the spinning rack if you looked hard enough. That meant Journey into Mystery number 122 with both Thor and Tales of Asgard.

Strange Tales number 139, which had Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Doctor Strange as well. Tales of Suspense number 72, which had Captain America, headed up by Iron Man, as well as Tales to Astonish number 74, which had Sub-Mariner and the Hulk. You winded it up with Dick Harris drawing his heart out in yet another issue of Sargent

Fury. This time it was number 24 from Marvel. A little bit farther down, if you dug hard enough, you found the first issue of Charlie Chan from Dell Comics and from Gold Key it was Doctor Solard number 15. 1965.

In the news, both on the local scene and in Washington, government bodies worked hard on the law to reduce the voting age in America to 18. Russia found itself losing ground in their diplomatic advances with the U.S. due to their involvement in supplying weapons to the North Vietnamese. And President Johnson signed into law measures to help upgrade the nation's tired railway

system, including allowing new trains that could reach speeds of over 400 miles an hour. In the movies, there was Marriage on the Rocks, Once a Thief, Donovan's Reef, Bob Hopin, I'll Take Sweden, and Jane. Classic performance by Lee Marvin, too, in Cat Ballou. TV Tonight, episodes of OK, Crackerby, there was another Dean Martin show.

You could laugh along with the Munsters, Bewitched, and My Three Sons, and then an incredible episode of Shindig, featuring on stage Leslie Gore, The Searchers, The Hollies, and… The really cool people could pick out Flo and Eddie, but you knew him as the Turtles. And sharing the radio with all those guys was a music group out of Texas that began in 1964 with a string of hits that ended right here.
