Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to The Point where all parts of pop culture come together. It's the end of Doctor Who. Well, at least it is for David Tennant. We sit down with him to find out what it was like at the end and at the beginning. Are you ready for Taylor Swift as Supergirl and another version of Vision Quest? No, we're not kidding. And it was one year ago today that we sat down and got to The Point for the first time like this.
This is The Point, The Point radio, hit The Point radio. Just in case you stepped out of your TARDIS and hadn't heard, the last two Doctor Who specials scheduled by the BBC have the ominous title of the end of time. At this time it's not being great and grandiose, it pretty much hits home because these two shows will spell the end of David Tennant and the role of Doctor Who. We had the chance to sit down
with Tennant and executive producer Julie Gardner to talk about how the show comes to an end and how it began for Tennant who stepped into the role after Christopher Eccleson and pretty much made it his own and possibly made himself the most popular Doctor in the long line that came before him. So how did he go about creating this particular Doctor persona? More importantly, how did he go about creating the look of the Doctor starting with,
well, those shoes. The very first shoes that I wore were my shoes. Yeah, because I wanted them to be old and battered and hanging off my feet and one thing that Costumes and Louise paid is a fantastic costumes and I hate things being really knackered and I really wanted to be scruffy and knackered and hanging off so I just got my own shoes and so I'm just going to wear these because the soles were literally flat. You're not painting a very
good picture of your personal hygiene. They were very old. They were very old shoes. But I really did fall apart so I think I wear them in maybe two stories. I wear them in the Christmas invasion and a bit of school reunion and then they fell apart. Have you still got them? No, we sold them for children. Oh, of course we did. These last episodes for David were filmed a few months ago and in the meantime both he and Julie have had
a chance to, well, settle back and enjoy what's coming up on the series. What's great is it's exciting now to watch it. Yes, we're the origins again. The other day when the first photographs came from onset. We were all like, oh look at that, oh, that's how you say so. And then I think we're genuinely in the dark and excited and excited to be viewers again. So we just made the show like we've always made the show. How they do it next is up to
them. As difficult as it was for him to film and as tragic as it is for a lot of David's fans, he feels that pretty much his departure from the series is all part of a cycle. I'm afraid they won't miss me as much as they think they will because how the show works is the new guy comes in, you go, who's he for about two weeks? You're feeling a bit, it feels a bit disconcerting and then he's the doctor and that's why it works. That was
my experience. Tom Baker, I'd grown up with him and I'd alive for seven years and then he left and Peter Davidson turns up and he's young and blonde and what's going on? And then two weeks, he was the guy. So that's how it works and that's one of the huge, one of the many brilliant pieces of genius that define holding the show special and that will happen, I promise. The question was inevitable. Would he ever return to the role? Who knows?
I mean, who knows? I mean, there's none planned for the immediate future and I think there should be a bit of space. But you know, 50th anniversary, 2013. Doctor Who, the end of time runs right after Christmas and again right after New Year's on BBC America. It's Thursday, December 24th, 2009. Here's what's going on at pop culture. One of the fun things about the pop culture business is waking up every morning and finding out just what obscure
television show, movie or in this case rock band is going to be making it into comic books. Are you ready for Def Leppard? The five members of Def Leppard are going to be repackaged and put out there in a whole bunch of different formats, including a comic series that cast them in a fantasy action adventure setting. Also be some video game tie ins, mobile phone apps and a lot more as well. No word exactly on when some of this will happen. More than
likely there'll be big announcements through the year and a big marketing push at this year's San Diego Comic Con. Here's a box office update for Avatar. It's now 77 million in the ticket drawer for them for the weekend up from the original estimate of about 73 million. And again, it makes it the highest grossing opening ever for a movie that's not a sequel or remake or direct adaptation. It also is the second highest grossing film to open in December. Just
barely not beating. I Am Legend. I Am Legend was at 77.2 million. Avatar at 77 million. Overall weekend business again in the theaters was 55% over the same weekend last year, but again down over what took place in 2007. If you're somebody who bought and enjoyed Wizards Tale from Kurt Busiek back when Amaz Studios rescued it from the bankruptcy depths of Eclipse Comics, well here's some good news. IDW is doing a new edition of the book. It'll be re-lettered of course,
recovered as well and features a lot of other improvements. The story was done by Busiek and David Wenzel back in 1997. Again, it was originally published or at least supposed to be published by Eclipse. Wildsorums imprint Amaz Studios picked it up and published it then in 1997 as a graphic novel. This will be a single issue as well. A single volume that is done by IDW and probably beautifully packaged like most of the things they do and Wizards Tale will be in stores in January.
As far as the Green Lantern movie goes, one thing has not been settled yet is who's going to play the part of Carol Farris. Well right now there's a short list out there on the internet. It includes Eva Green from Casino Royale, Carrie Russell from Mission Impossible 3 and Felicity and even Diane Krueger from Inglorious Bastards and even other names like Blake Lively or Jennifer Garner. Even though it is the holiday weeks, we should get an answer to this and the role cast for the Green
Lantern movie very soon. In the midst of the holidays, we haven't had a chance to talk much about the Golden Globes and the nominations are out there. In fact, we're just about three of the weeks or maybe a little more away from the actual awards themselves. You may have missed it but here's a quick catch up. For example, Robert Downey Jr. for Sherlock Holmes is up for Best Actor. I know you haven't seen it yet but in the case of the Golden Globes that really doesn't make any
difference. Most of the recognizable pop culture names turn up in the television category. For example, for Best Drama, it's possible you can see an award going to Big Love, Dexter, House, Mad Men or True Blood. For Best Actor in a television series, January Jones from Mad Men is up as well as Anna Paquin from True Blood and Kara Sedgwick for The Closer among others. For Best Actor, Simon Baker in The Mentalist, Michael C. Hall for Dexter, John Hamm. For Mad Men, Hugh Laurie for House and
Bill Paxton for Big Love. Best Comedy or Musical Television Series could go to 30 Rock, Entourage, Glee, Modern Family or The Office as well. And there's a lot more to be handed out when the awards take place January 17th on NBC. When it comes to Hollywood casting rumors, especially those that come true, the best place to go for that information is the Latino Review. They've been pretty much right on all year on various things. In fact, they're the ones following the Carol Ferris role that's
being cast for the Green Lantern movie, hopefully in the next few days as well. So here's an interesting note that they had. They called the stupidest news of the day and well, I think you'll agree. There's talk now of a Supergirl motion picture called Supergirl the Love Story and in the lead Taylor Swift. The only substantial part about this is that there is a Supergirl script that's making the rounds out there. No attachment to Taylor Swift is official. In fact, it's more
than likely doubtful at the very least, but it's a fun rumor to kick around. Television might be a little boring for the next couple of weeks, but once January comes, things are going to heat up and heat up in a big way. And one of the things that are turning up those flames happens to be 24. You know, it's going to be premiering on Fox early in January, and there's already been a little bit of a trailer out there, but there's a new one. It's quite frankly, a lot more excited and believe
me, it'll get you pumped for the return of 24. As compliments of the folks at spoiler TV, you can catch it on our website, Githerboyradio.com and 24 premieres on Fox on January 17th. All right, so we're two months away from the direct to DVD release of Justice League Crisis on Two Earths. And you know, when we get that close, that question just keeps popping up again. The question of what's going to be next from DC's direct to DVD line looks like all the rumors are pointing
to a strong possibility of a Batman feature. This one being Under the Hood, the one written by Judd Winnick and who may also be doing it for the direct to DVD feature as well. It would feature the Red Hood and possibly other Batman characters tied into that storyline as well. We'll hear more about this as the end of January rolls along. That'll be about the time the publicity push takes place for Justice League Crisis on Two Earths, which will be released direct to DVD in February.
It was just a few days ago that we told you about the new Disney Digital Comics line that was going to premiere in Italy and would turn up here in the US eventually. Well, eventually has already happened. The iPhone app is up and free right now in the iTunes app store. And there are tons of Disney titles for 99 cents to one 99 each. A lot of which have been published by Boom, but a lot of this material has not been seen in the US yet. And it's pretty fascinating done by the Italian
creators who, as you probably know, taking the Disney characters into a bunch of different directions have not happened well for decades here in the US. So put a little sticky on your desk right now. And if sometime over the holiday you are lucky enough to acquire an iTunes card. Well, this would be a great thing to spend it on. It's also available to for the PSP, but you can check the app out of course in the iTunes app store. If you followed last year's broken trinity
series from top cow, here's some good news for you. They're following it up with a new limited series set to debut in February. Broken Trinity Pandora's box will deal with everything that well ended the last mini series, including the fact that Witchblade darkness and the Angelus as the three primary forces taking on the artifacts as well. And the search for those will continue with this new series. It'll be co-written by Rob Levin and Brian Edward Hill. Art'll be by Alessandro
Viti as well. And the six issue mini series also has some great cover work by Tommy Lee Edwards as well. Broken Trinity Pandora's box will begin the six issue run in stores in February. As illogical as it sounds, it does happen. Image United number two is sold out even though it's barely in comic stores in some areas. It might not even be on the shelf yet until the weekend. The six part crossover written by Robert Kirkman and of course the one that features all the image founders including
Eric Larson, Rob Liefeld, Rob McFarland, Wills Bertagio, Mark Silvestri and Jim Valentino has sold out at the distribution level, meaning that whatever stores get they get and there'll be no more reorders possible at least on this printing. Of course there are tons of different variants out this week. We've told you about that for Image United number two. And there will be a second printing announced more than likely in January with a new cover says Image by Rob Liefeld.
Studio 407 has announced that their science fiction horror property Night and Fog has been optioned by film. It's been picked up by producers Gil Adler and Shane McCarthy. Adler, as you know, has done a bunch of different stuff including Constantine's Superman Returns. He also recently produced Dead of Night which was also based on a comic book property popular Italian comic Dylan Dogg. Night and Fog tells the story of a legend from World War II about an infectious
mist that was unleashed on a military base transforming its victims into well just unstoppable creatures of the night. Right now Night and Fog is available in comic stores in a single issue format also available on the iPhone as well through the Comixology phone app. There'll be a trade paperback of Night and Fog headed into comic stores sometime in the early spring. IDW is picking up where the end of the G.I. Joe movie left off with an all-new series that begins
very soon. It's called G.I. Joe Operation Hiss or H.I.S.S. and features both Scarlet and Snake Eyes in the Spotlight. Writer Brian Reed is taking on the series which will run five issues and premiere in comic stores from IDW in February. Hey here's your oh my god they're really not going to remake that movie rumor of the week. This one involves Twilight's Taylor Lautner and a possible remake of the 80s cult classic. Are you ready for this? Vision Quest. No official word on this yet. However
there are some pretty strong reports out there that a remade script is making the rounds written by Richard Munich and it's said to be rather faithful to the original film. Lautner's people have said he's very interested in it. In fact E! Online has pretty much confirmed most of this at this particular point. However nothing solid as far as a studio or director has been reported yet. 47 Keebler elves were killed today when a light plane plunged into their tree.
How much for the little girl? Weird scenes inside the gold mine. This town needs an enema. Aren't you tired of all those moralizing public service announcements you hear this time of year? You know the ones that act as if you're some kind of moron.

We ended prohibition just in time for the boom in car sales during the depression no less. My head may go really thin but my heart will be obedient with intoxicating kisses for the principal ingredient. Of course, statistically speaking we are all kinds of morons. Yeah demon drink and drive will get you
killed and you'll probably take me down in the process. I think that's why you hear all those PSAs this time of year. The radio staff doesn't want to get killed on their way home from all those parties and if you drink you're gonna drink anyway. That's just the way it is. So this is my gold on the pop culture channel giving all the Point Listeners the only advice you might possibly follow. Early morning gold taxi.
Early morning gold taxi. It's that time again as we go back to 1986. Experts urged President Reagan to look into his own party for facts on the Iranian arms sales scandal. Former heavyweight champ, Mohammed Ali announced he would help market a new luxury sports car called The Greatest. Three years after his death, Jackie Wilson had his biggest success in Great Britain with the re-release of a song called Reed Pateat that hit number one and sold over 700,000 copies. In the movies there was Crimes of the Heart, Little Shop of Horrors, the fourth Star Trek movie,
The Golden Child with Eddie Murphy and Platoon making great use of a song by the Jefferson airplane. TV Tonight had Highway to Heaven, The New Bike Hammer, Head of the Class, an episode of Perfect Strangers and Magnum P.I. and CBS capped off the night with the Equalizer. On a radio, a young man who began playing guitar at age 11 and working in a whole bunch of cover bands. Later on he worked with some big acts like the Pointer Sisters, Elder Barge and Earth Winded Fire. He's worked with a lot of folks over the years but this time it was his turn in the spotlight.
And his turn in the top ten too is Robbie Neville and Cela V. All right, got some more surprises for you as we go back to 1970. The National Safety Council released figures predicting over 600 people would perish on the roads in the U.S. over the holiday weekend. Labor leader Cesar Chavez was released from jail after a High Court decided his civil rights had been violated. Elvis Presley stretched limousine, pulled up into the White House and delivered a letter to President Nixon requesting a meeting to give him a chance to be a federal agent at large.
Elvis wanted to be a federal agent and even gave Nixon a chrome-plated Colt 45 as a gift, hoping this would sway his decision. In the movies there was Little Fosse and Big Halsey, Where Eagles Dare, Albert Finney and Scrooge and Love Stories still with that song on the radio in the top 100. TV Tonight had family affair, there was a Flip Wilson show and Jim Neighbors too. Some action in Name of the Game and Felony Squad and ABC had the Partridge family. On the radio a died truly a cornerstone for Motown Records. He'd split with his group the Miracles back a few years ago. However, they dug up a recording he'd done in 1966.
And it was number one for Smokey. And the tears of a clown when there's no one around. Merry Christmas, The Point, The Point.
