Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to The Point where all parts of pop culture come together and plenty to be thankful for on this one, including a little more backstage scoop on what's coming up on the event direct from the cast and a Tim Burton Twitter story. Then on the other side, there's that Buffy remake, but we'll talk about that. It's Thanksgiving week 2010 and let's get to the point right now. As we've told you, things are starting
to heat up on the event with a couple of episodes used to wrap up this first half of the season and big plans set for the return of this series early in 2011. Cast members like Jason Ritter are pretty pumped about what's coming up. I'm excited for the next half of the season to see how more of our stories start interconnecting. I think we've been on our own little Sean and Layla story and that's been so much fun. I really have loved watching both of
these characters transition from sort of innocence in the world to taking a little bit more ass. But it's been an interesting journey. I completely was blindsided several times during the season. I mean, I did not think that I would, that Sean would find Layla in episode five. I really had been thinking about that as a maybe a season long problem. And so it was really exciting to be, to to make an assumption about where the show was going and then have the rug pulled out for me
over and over and over again. Things on the show are ever evolving for the actors, as Jason explains. You know, well, it's interesting. There are always, you know, there are always things that change in the editing room and things that change from, you know, for time's sake and things like that. There was a little something in last night's episode where that was cut out where when I first talked to Coley, she kind of is mad at me for ditching her at the motel a couple episodes
before. But maybe that'll come back. Maybe we've talked on the phone before that. So they cut that out. But there's sometimes we go, oh, that was a cool thing. But I understand for the whole sake of the show that that it was unnecessary for that moment. But then for the most part, you know, especially with a lot of the action stuff and a lot of the stunt things, when you're there and you're seeing something happen, you see all of the bells and, not the
bells and whistles, but all the little pulleys and how it's all working. And so you see that it's, you know, you can see all the magic has gone. And so when you get to see some of those sequences all cut together, it's really exciting. So any hints about what's coming up from Jason or series co-star Sarah Romer? I did read somewhere, so I'm safe to say this. I read somewhere that that Layla makes a discovery about one of the cast members that is a stunning revelation that will
change the way she views everything. Just like all of us, even the cast members like to play the game of trying to guess exactly what is the event. I don't. I know that there are other cast members who do. Laura Ennis does and, you know, if any Dale does. I think Blair thought he knew and that was frustrating because I know he's not sure. And now he's not sure. Yeah. So, so yeah, no, I don't know what it is. Sarah and I keep having theories with each other, but catch up on the event at
NBC.com and be prepared for the return of the event coming in February. It's Thanksgiving week 2010. Here's what's going on in pop culture. This just screams bad idea. Atlas Entertainment and Warner Brothers say they're doing a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie based on the original movie and again, not on the television series. Actress turned screenwriter, Whit Anderson is doing the screenplay for the new film. And again,
it's based on the movie. So therefore you won't see Willow or Oz or Xander or any of those characters. And you also won't see any involvement from Joss Whedon as well. Who's decidedly upset about the whole thing online this week. Whedon made a comment saying it's a sad, sad reflection of our times when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths. Wasting no time. ABC family has a new deal with Warner Brothers to acquire the final two Harry
Potter movies. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows parts one and two. As with the previous movies, a new agreement gives ABC family the first rights to getting it on basic cable. The network will premiere Deathly Hallows part one in the spring of 2013, followed by part two in the winter of 2013, 2014. Just in case you've been in a cave, part one of Deathly Hallows is in theaters right now. Part two hits on July 15th of next year. The sci-fi channel is already making
plans for a lot of new additions to the schedule early in 2011, including the new Being Human. Based on, of course, the popular British series, this is a new original run with totally different characters and hopefully not too much of a difference in storyline. Thirteen episodes of the one-hour series premiere on the 17th of January on sci-fi. There'll also be new series runs of Ghost Hunters International, Ghost Hunters, and Merlin will air on Fridays on
the network starting the 7th of January right after WWE Smackdown. In the meantime, they're going to run off all the remaining episodes of Caprica in one big bunch on January the 4th. Sci-fi will run a five-hour block running from 6 to 11 p.m. Over in Fox, some more announcements about what they're planning for the mid-season, including a special episode of Glee that'll come on after the Super Bowl. That's February 6th in case you're keeping track. It'll be on sometime
after the game. I wasn't likely close to 1030 but keep close to the DVR for that one. Bones gets a new time slot on Thursdays at 9 o'clock following American Idol in January and this can't be good news. Fringe moves to Fridays, the death spot. New episodes of Fringe return on Friday the 28th of January at 9. Capitalizing on the success of The Life with RG Magazine, Betty and Veronica get their turn in a new spot on the newsstands early in 2011. It's Veronica and Betty, a new magazine
set to debut pretty much in the spring of next year. The title will have Veronica and Betty away from the Riverdale crowd as they become exchange students and engage in worldwide adventures. The new series is written by Michael Useland who also does the Archie Wedding series in Life with Archie magazine. Jorge Garcia is back with JJ Abrams and that's good news. He'll be co-starring in Alcatraz, a Fox pilot which Abrams is producing based on a story about the most infamous prison
of all time, Alcatraz and a group of missing Alcatraz prisoners and guards who reappear from the past 30 years later in present day. Right now plans are for the pilot to begin production in January. Now here's your chance to finally work on a project with Tim Burton. Tim's latest project involves a collaborative story effort that begins on Twitter. Here's the deal. He began a story about his character, Staneboy, and he's inviting everybody else to contribute as well. More than 127 characters
worth obviously. Some will be used, some won't, but when it's all over with the story will have well dozens and dozens of authors involved with it. You get more information of course on the Burton story website, BurtonStory.com, or follow it on Twitter or contribute as well at Burton Story. Records were broken, but did you really expect them not to be when Harry Potter hit the theaters a few days ago? The overall weekend box office? The movie picked up $125 million which puts them in the same class list
as things like Dark Knight, Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Man's Chest, Iron Man 2, and of course Twilight New Moon, but still not bad company to keep as far as ticket sales go. It came in a little behind the first Harry Potter movie, Sorcerer's Stone, but it did break some records when it came to the Midnight Thursday showings. It came in number three as the third biggest grossing film ever there behind Twilight Eclipse and Twilight New Moon with $24 million in ticket sales and just
that one showing around the country. As far as the rest of the top 10 went, well there were some other movies out there. Mega Mind was at number two. Chalk up another $16 million for that one. Unstoppable came in at number three with $13 million this weekend. Due date still hanging in in the top five at number four. Total of $72 million so far for that one and the comic base red is still in there too in the top 10. This time at number eight with just under $84 million in ticket sales so far.
In an interesting double shot of TV series to comics news, Dynamite Entertainment picked up the rights to do comics based on the sci-fi television series Warehouse 13. That series comes back for a third season during the summer of 2011. Comics to be produced sometime between now and then announced soon from Dynamite and surprisingly Jericho is still alive. Comic book rights to that property have now moved to IDW. Jericho Redo collects the first three issues of
Jericho season three that we produced in a whole package coming from IDW in February which will also release a fourth issue of the Jericho comic series. UK fans may have to look to eBay to get this one. Hasbro has decided not to release the Transformers spastic figure in the country. The name is viewed as offensive to the disabled in the UK. Hasbro pulled the toy in response to concerns as reported there by the newspaper The Daily Record. No term in the US. Hasbro says the
term is not seen in the same light here in the US and they will distribute the toy in time for the holiday. The point radio. We're gonna work, we're gonna search for an event. We won't stop until we have an event. Long time, long time, long time. There was a touch of sarcasm as he said. This is my gold. They say everybody's a critic. They say put your money where your mouth is. Well here's one critic who did just that.
Last week a 67 year old Wisconsin man was watching Dancing with the Stars. Angry at what he saw, he found his shotgun, took aim, fired and reloaded. He then told his wife to get his handguns, the ones his daughter had hidden out of safety concerns. Instead, Mrs. Cowen left the house and went to the police. To make a 15 hour standoff story short, police, hostage negotiators and a dog team arrested Stephen N. Cowen for reckless endangerment after he shot his television set to death.
That's it for the Mr. Cowen did not appreciate contestant Bristol Palin's performance, screaming the only reason she was there was due to the influence of tea bagger queen Sarah Palin, her mother. He felt Bristol simply was not a good dancer. Cowen had been taking medication for bipolar disorder and he had been drinking before he came home. Bristol's mom is a well-known opponent of gun control
regulations and likes to shoot animals from helicopters. One man's goose is another woman's gander. You'd think the elder Palin would appreciate somebody exercising his Second Amendment rights. Ah, I pity the poor television. This is my gold on the pop culture channel, The Point. Our goal this week is to get you into the comic store, get you some cool stuff to bring out of this tour and leave you a few dollars to spend for Black Friday. We start with a new series,
well kind of, from DC. A lot of press and a lot of attention has been given to what Greg Ruck has been doing with Bad Woman. Bad Woman number zero hits this week. I don't think you're going to want to miss that. Speaking of ladies getting a second chance, Dynamic Forces has their reboot of Vampirala out this week. Take a look at that to see what their take on the character is. It's a little pricey maybe but it's really beautiful. Another great hardcover this time
collecting the best artwork of Stan Goldberg from the days of RG Comics. It is of course done by the people who we always tell you do the very best in these trade paperbacks and hardcover collections. That's IDW. And this week another cool collection to have is the Masterworks collection of the very earliest Doctor Strange stories. This is another nice Marvel collection and it's absolutely beautiful with some of the most incredible work ever done in comics by Steve
Ditko. Grab this, give yourself an early present. Wherever you're shopping this week or next you'll find the very latest list of comic stores in your area with the comic book locator service at 1-888-COMIC-BOOK and again free app available for iPhones or iPads in the iTunes app store. That puts a cap on our week. We're back in a couple of days. In the meantime we give it to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on Get The Point Radio and you can listen free
anytime on your computer, your mobile phone, whatever it takes. A couple of clicks and you're there at GetThePointRadio.com.
