“Rowdy Roddy Piper Lends his Voce to Green Lantern: Emerald Knights

“Rowdy” Roddy Piper ruled the wrestling ring for the better part of four decades, crafting a Hall of Fame career that brought cheers – and huzzahs – from fans across the globe. Along the way, Piper established numerous milestones that set his career apart from all others.

At age 15, Piper was the youngest professional wrestler to ever enter the squared circle – and he would proceed to hold more than 38 titles while eclipsing 7,000 victories in professional matches. It was the main event at the very first Wrestlemania – pitting Piper and “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff against Hulk Hogan and Mr. T – that truly established the WWE.

Of course, any fanboy worth his weight in comics can recite Piper’s famous lines from John Carpenter’s cult classic They Live. Wherever he goes, somebody asks Piper if he has any bubblegum.

Today, Piper continues to entertain and educate, whether it be via his one-man show or as a best selling author of an autobiography entitled “In the Pit with Piper.” And on June 7, fans can experience Piper’s acting chops in his very first voiceover role for animation as the barbaric Bolphunga in Green Lantern: Emerald Knights.Produced by Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights will be distributed by Warner Home Video on Blu-Ray™, DVD, On Demand and for Download.

Piper’s character – Bolphunga the Unrelenting – is the central antagonist in the episodic segment entitled “Mogo Doesn’t Socialize.” Based on the 1985 story created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, the story centers on Bolphunga’s search for Mogo, the largest Green Lantern, in hopes of engaging the famed warrior in a battle worthy of the villain. The role serves as a perfect vehicle to showcase Piper’s strength and wonderful sense of humor.

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights weaves six legendary stories of the Green Lantern Corps’ rich mythology around preparations for an attack by an ancient enemy. As the battle approaches, Hal Jordan mentors new recruit Arisia in the history of the Green Lantern Corps, telling tales of Avra (the first Green Lantern) and several of Hal’s comrades – including Abin Sur, Kilowog, Laira and Mogo. In the end, Arisia must rise to the occasion to help Hal, Sinestro and the entire Green Lantern Corps save the universe from the destructive forces of Krona.

Primetime television stars Nathan Fillion (Castle) and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) lead a diverse array of performers as the voices behind the Green Lantern Corps, including actor/spoken word artist Henry Rollins (Sons of Anarchy, The Henry Rollins Show), Jason Isaacs (the Harry Potter films), Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy), Kelly Hu (The Vampire Diaries) as Laira and Wade Williams (Prison Break) as Deegan. Radio Hall of Fame commentator/talk show host Michael Jackson voices the esteemed Guardian, Ganthet.

Bruce Timm is executive producer of Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. Directors are Lauren Montgomery, Jay Oliva and Christopher Berkeley. Oliva directed “Mogo Doesn’t Socialize” from a script by Gibbons.

Piper spent a few moments after his recording session to discuss his current activities, his love of acting, and the responsibilities of being a role model. Listen closely … because Roddy just ran out of chewing gum. (more…)

Star Wars on Blu-ray Details Unveiled

20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment took advantage of yesterday’s International Star Wars Day to formally announce the details surrounding this September’s Blu-ray debut of the original Star Wars trilogy along with the more recent trilogy. The six films are accompanied by three discs of extras totaling a stellar 40 hours of material – some new, some old.

Here’s the formal release with the details. Begin saving for this event, although let me caution you that the original versions of the trilogy won’t be here. George Lucas has previously indicated the film is in no shape for high definition conversion.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (May 4th, 2011) – Bring home the adventure and share Star Wars™ with your whole family – when Star Wars: The Complete Saga comes to Blu-ray Disc from Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment! To be released beginning on September 12 internationally and on September 16 in North America, the nine-disc collection brings the wonder of the entire Saga direct to your living room, where you can revisit all of your favorite Star Wars moments – in gorgeous high definition and with pristine, 6.1 DTS Surround Sound. Dive deeper into the universe with an unprecedented 40+ hours of special features, highlighted by never-before-seen content sourced from the Lucasfilm archives.

The comprehensive collection also features numerous deleted, extended and alternate scenes, new documentaries and a cross-section of the countless Star Wars spoofs that have appeared in pop culture over the past three decades. Marking the first time ever that the full Saga is available in one complete collection, Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray also features a coveted peek into the making of the Saga with vintage documentaries, audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, prop and costume turnarounds, retrospectives and more.

Episodes I-III and IV-VI will also be available as distinct Blu-ray Trilogy collections.

Fans will get an exclusive first look at some of the collection’s extensive special features at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con International – which marks Lucasfilm’s 35th anniversary as a Comic-Con presence. In 1976, the fledgling film company was looking for innovative, grass-roots ways to promote its underdog release, a film no one expected to succeed – a space opera known (at the time) only as Star Wars. One of the first film companies to reach out directly to core audiences by way of fan conventions, Lucasfilm will return to the venue to showcase the full evolution of the epic story with a special first look at Star Wars: The Complete Saga. LEGENDARY WRITER TELLS LEGENDARY MONSTER STORY!

Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, the Uncut Edition

Okay, my fellow monster fans, the time has come. This is the secret project I’ve been teasing about for the past few months. I’m writing a vintage-style “filmbook” treatment (in other words, a pulpy prose version) of the classic Universal movie Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man for Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine!

The stunningly glorious cover was painted by the incomparable Joe Jusko. My version of the story is adapted from Curt Siodmak’s original screenplay, containing several scenes that were cut from the released film. In my filmbook, Bela Lugosi’s Frankenstein Monster is blind, and will speak, as Siodmak intended. Think of it as a “Director’s Cut” of a long-cherished monster movie.

Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man was the second Frankenstein film I ever saw–and also was my first encounter with the Wolf Man–when I was six years old. This movie altered my DNA and I’ve never been the same since.Of course, getting to write the filmbook for FM is extraordinarily thrilling. I was sick a lot as a little kid and Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine served as a sort of security blanket for me every dreaded time I went to the doctor’s office. FM never, ever failed to make me feel better.

Many thanks to Phil, Jessie, and Joe. Couldn’t have done this without you.
I can hardly describe the sense of joy I have for being involved in my favorite childhood magazine, as well as taking a small part in the Universal Monsters saga, my favorite fictional universe.

This project is a dream come true for both Joe and myself. Hope you’ll join us.

On Sale in September!

The Frick Museum aka Avengers Mansion

The Real Avengers Mansion

22077970-800x600-1421132

Today I learned that Avengers Mansion, home to stalwarts like Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and do you really need me to rattle off the full roster, is based on a real place in New York– the Henry Clay Frick house, a city-block sized mansion at 1 East 70th St., right opposite Central Park. (The theoretical address for Avengers Mansion is 890 5th Avenue, which is in the same location.) Today the building houses the Frick Collection of art and is open to the public– so it’s quite possible Joss Whedon could shoot there.

This was brought to my attention by Gothamist (yes, I know, it should be covering DC, not Marvel) which had a brief piece showing a number of the secret rooms in the Frick that aren’t shown to the general public. Of course, even Gothamist wasn’t allowed to take photos of the Quinjet hangar.

Frick himself, incidentally, was the Lex Luthor of his day, known for strikebreaking and being at least partly responsible for the Johnstown Flood, and was dubbed one of the Worst C.E.O.s in American History by Portfolio magazine.

ComicMix Six: The Best Major Battles of THOR!

This week, [[[Thor]]] comes to theaters! With a director like Kenneth Branagh, stars such as Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Anthony Hopkins, and rave reviews happening from advanced screenings, many fans old and new can’t wait for this latest film from Marvel Studios and Paramount. It stars Thor, god of thunder, who in the Marvel Universe divides his time between living in Asgard, traveling through other dimensions, and acting as a superhero on Earth.

Over the years, Thor’s had some pretty epic adventures. So let’s take a look at six tales that any new Thor fan should check out.

“BUT DR. BLAKE CAN DIE!”

Thor vol. 1 #145-153

For his impudence, Thor is banished to Earth without his powers. As he continues to act as a superhero as best he can, Thor’s allies plead to Odin, the All-Father, to return his son’s full abilities. This story keeps building up the stakes as Thor’s sometimes lover and constant ally Sif inhabits the powerful Destroyer armor. Meanwhile, Loki arrives to make another bid for power and Ulik the troll shows up to cause more trouble. Elsewhere, Hela, goddess of death, watches and waits. An epic storyline that highlights both Thor and Don Blake as heroes and is a classic tale of the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby days.

From Airship 27 and Cornerstone Book Publishers

NEW SCI-FI THRILLER FROM AIRSHIP 27 PRODUCTIONS & CORNERSTONE BOOK PUBLISHERS!
HE WAS ONLY A COPY…BUT…
From Andrew Salmon, the acclaimed author of the “The Light of Men”, comes another gripping science fiction novel!
In the not too distant future, Earth is ravaged by a series of natural disasters that have decimated the population. To rebuild mankind, science has begun human cloning. The clones are created from the DNA of police officers and fire fighters; the goalMore >, to establish a new cadre of selfless guardians to protect the fragile remains of humanity.

Clones are grown with the memories of past lives erased so that they don’t have to carry around the baggage of lost tragedies. But something is wrong with C-Peter Reilly, grown from the cells of a Vancouver detective. He has memories of his first life, of his wife and children and the world before the devastation.  Such information is taboo and should his secret be discovered, he would instantly be mind-wiped. Reilly must keep his painful memories to himself while coping mentally and physically with his “second” life.

Praise for THE DARK LAND: “Andrew Salmon has done it again. ‘The Dark Land’ is an excellent blend of noir crime fiction and hard SF, with the unmistakable spice of the classic pulp spirit. Plus which Salmon raises moral questions, and does not provide pat answers for them. This is a rare novel that both entertains readers, and makes them think as well.” Charles Saunders (Author of popular Imaro series)
Originally self-published in a limited edition, Airship 27 Productions & Cornerstone Book Publishers are proud to present this re-edited, new edition featuring a cover by Mark Maddox and interior illustrations by Victor Dandridge, with designs by Rob Davis.

HANCOCK TIPS HIS HAT TO ‘DEADLINE ZOMBIES!’

Tippin’ Hancock’s Hat- Reviews of All Things Pulp by Tommy Hancock
DEADLINE ZOMBIES-The Adventures of Maxi and Moxie
by Teel James Glenn
Published by BooksforaBuck.com
2010

A good Pulp story must contain several things.  First, it has to have engaging, likable characters, doesn’t matter if they’re white hats or black, they just have to be characters that grab the reader and don’t let go.  It also has to have a pacing that is both relentless and encouraging at the same time, breakneck quick but rousing and rushing enoug to make you want to hang on for the ride.  It doesn’t hurt for there to be fantastic plot elements, twists and turns that keep the reader interested and guessing.  Also, a decent pinch of weirdness along with snappy, witty dialogue also add quite bit of Pulp to tale.  Yeah, a Pulp rock ’em sock ’em tale of derring do must include those things.

Good thing that Teel James Glenn knows what makes a good Pulp stor.

‘DEADLINE ZOMBIES’ is a collection of New Pulp stories by Glenn that center on the adventures of newspaperman Moxie Dononvan and his actress girlfriend, later wife, Maxi.  The title is slightly misleading due to the fact that although zombies do make an appearance within the book, all five stories do not relate to the undead.  Oh, no, Glenn sprinkles all sorts of oddity throughout the book, including living puppets, little people of the Irish variety, mad alchemists, beastly beings, and even fantastic starring appearances by historical figures, most notably an excellent portrayal of Bela Lugosi.   Themes of all sorts abound throughout the stories as well, including magic versus modernity and transformations and metamorphosis

The latter point is clear not only in what happens to characters in the stories, but in the central pair of heroes as well.  Moxie is a beat reporter and Maxi a B actress as the first story opens, but by the end of the book both of them have gone through job changes and personal development as well, primarily by marrying one another.   These two characters are definitely cut from the Nick and Nora Charles cloth and they have the witty, sometimes caustic banter back and forth to prove it.  Glenn not only paints vivid characters well, but he captures the nuances of nostalgia within his characters just enough to remind you of someone else you once read about.

Another strong point of the collection is the canvas which Glenn creates.  As fully formed as his characters are, his settings and details of action within the stories is ten times as strong.   Many times I lost myself while reading, feeling as I could be standing on Governor’s Island or that I could hear Moxie’s wooden leg (This is a great concept handled well by Glenn!) clomping just behind me.  The entire collection of stories open up like a wide door and welcome the reader in, refusing to let same reader out until the ride is over.

The only putting off point about this entire collection had to do with some editing issues.  There were a couple of instances where I was jarred enough that I was shaken out of the flow of the story, but it was not difficult at all to get back into it.   Overall, DEADLINE ZOMBIES is an excellent set of stories written with the sensibility of classic Pulp and Noir while balancing well the layers of description and characterization that constitute what many New Pulp writers are doing today.

FOUR OUT OF FIVE TIPS OF THE HAT-I’ll go to the newsstands again and again for more Moxie and Maxi. Guaranteed.  Copyboy!
