Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to The Point, where all parts of pop culture come together. We've got more on community. Alison Brie and Danny Booty talk about what's ahead for the rest of this fourth season and cross their fingers for more down the road from NBC. Plus, the Doctor Who convention you've been waiting for, guess where that is? And look out, the zombies finally hit Riverdale. Let's get to The Point.
This is The Point. The Point radio, get The Point radio. Give me a hand, show me the dark. As NBC's community rolls through its fourth season without the help of showrunner and creator Dan Harmon, there's been a different dichotomy among the characters. And among those characters that have had the most changes, Danny Booty's Abbot and Alison Brie's Annie.
For example, there are the questions about how things are going to progress in the relationship Annie has with Joel McHale's character, Jeff. This season is sort of a fun season for Jeff and Annie fans because, as usual, their relationship doesn't really progress. I think that the last episode showed a progression in terms of Annie's maturity and their maturity sort of as friends in terms of her admitting that
she sort of has a crush on Jeff. And I think that Annie will always have a crush on Jeff. And I don't know that Jeff will ever be fully comfortable really getting together with Annie. Or if that's even, you know, it's not as primary a focus on Jeff's radar as it probably is on Annie's. And that's fair. So I think this season is sort of like them just acknowledging and just being good friends. But at the same time, for fans, there are some ways, without
them actually getting really close, there will be some interesting things for fans later this season just between Joel and I. And then there's that new little twist between Annie and Abbot. Certainly when you see these characters relate with each other in the fourth season, there's a closeness. Yeah, there's a significant closeness now that's happening. And it's almost like
Annie has entered into Troy territory. Obviously not no one can see it Troy. But like, I'd like both Troy and Abbot since Annie moved in to their place has really kind of entered their world and is accepted in that world. And so that that understanding exists within the characters for the fourth season. I also like how there's like this kind of a language that's happened between Annie and
Abbot that really a lot of it started to I look back at the timeline episode in season three with the very end I was like, you should move in here. And then she moved Annie moves in. And then this year you stick forensics and Annie takes forensics to him because she knows how observant he is. And I think there's something kind of nice that we understand each other and where we see each other thriving. And I think a lot of that is because of the
Dreamatorium we know that we both have this very specific worldview. And even in small ways, I think there are things in episodes that just referenced that Annie and Abbot are very close like that references that they're watching Cougar Town together now and they do a little glass clink like they're starting to have little idiosyncrasies like Troy and Abbot.
And watching Annie is now my second or third favorite show. Third favorite show. Yeah, like the space on Cougar Town and you. A lot of fans feel the community is a television treasure yet to be discovered. Kind of ahead of its time much like Arrested Development. It's first of all, that's a huge compliment for us. And Arrested Development is, I mean,
my favorite comedy of the last 10, 15 years. So I also came around to LA, watched it on DVD actually. And I was blown away by it. And I think that is part of the reason why I was able to also buy into that show and its nature is because I was able to watch it in bunches. And I heard about it with word of mouth show. And then I was able to kind of go in being like, I'm going to give the show a full chance. I'm going to watch all
three seasons right now. And immediately I had a common language with a bunch of people who watched Arrested. I could say I'm young. And immediately everyone would laugh for us. You know, that kind of thing. And I think there is certain, there is an amount of that within community as well where people will start watching the show, I think, and I think saying pop pop to each other 10 years from now. It'll be a nice little secret language.
You know, but like, like Allison said, a lot of our comedy is also reliant and I think most comedies reliant on what's happening now in the world around you, especially our show, which relies on a lot of back and forth, which is pretty immediate with the fans and Twitter and stuff. So some of the jokes may not necessarily age well, but I think the storylines and the characters, I think they will be appreciated a few years from now.
I think there's a lot of challenges our show faces. The number one thing is that there's so much on television. And how do you get to our show? We're not a show that's marketed like all over the place, you know, and we've always faced a lot of competition. We've always faced shows like Big Bang and American Idol. And so I think just getting people aware of our show is a big challenge. But I do think when they do get aware of our show, I like
to think and hope that they'll really enjoy it. Maybe just a little too progressive. I agree with you. I do think that it's always been a very progressive show. Dan Harmon set this precedent of really pushing the boundaries of what could be on network television. And in that way, I think that, you know, it will take people some time to catch up with it because it's a scary thing. You're not something
you're not used to seeing. It's a little bit of a scary thing. I sometimes I wonder, though, on the other hand, about how the show will age just because so many of our references are now our current. Yeah. But at the same time, you know, the genius of the show is that it sort of weaves in all those types of things. You know, later this season, we have our Christmas episode, which is sort of an homage to an Alfred Hitchcock movie
Roast. So it's not like all of our references are completely current. And in the moment, some of the stuff, it really spans genres and time periods and things like that. So so I'm coming back around. And I do, I do agree. I do agree that I think I've always felt that it's a show that is better the second time you watch it, because there's so much going on that you catch it again later. And that's how I felt about Arrested Development. I could watch it
again and again. I caught up. I was I was the person who caught up with it late. I caught up with Freaks and Geeks late. So I hope that I hope that we can be a show like that. Certainly, our fans are amazing right now, but there's not that many of them. If we could reach more people later, that would be even better for a season of community right now at NBC new episodes every Thursday and you can catch up on NBC.com. As always, we got the latest in pop culture.
Actors Kerry Russell over already on television success in the Americans, the FX series, it's been granted a second season so far is now also the female lead in the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Kerry joins Gary Oldman and Jason Clark in the film that is also going to be directed by Matt Reeves, who was originally one of the co creators of her breakout series Felicity back in the 90s. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes said to be in theaters right around Memorial Day of 2014. Start
saving your money for that overseas ticket. The BBC has announced a three day Doctor Who convention oddly enough for November 22nd, 23rd and 24th this year, coinciding perfectly with the 50th anniversary of the show. In fact, that 50th anniversary special will be shown around the world on the BBC over that weekend. No word yet on guests, but with the BBC behind it, you can more than likely expect anybody who's anybody to be there and details on pricing and
hotels will more than likely be revealed soon. Looks like free comic book day this year is going to be pretty hot so far. More than four and a half million comics have been ordered by retailers to give away on that day, which by the way is May the 4th and it falls the day after Iron Man 3 debuts in the theater, which works out pretty nice. That was wise is a 30% increase over what was given away last year, and there's some pretty diverse books in the piles to plan for free comic
book day. There's a Buck Rogers sampler, a Walking Dead comic, a Sesame Street series, and of course the new Snyder Lee Superman preview from DC among many, many more. Check with your retailer to see what they're going to have. But again, free comic book day for this year coming up quick on May the 4th. Alright, zombies are hot, so I guess it's a little logical they're going to turn up in Riverdale. Archie Comics has announced a new ongoing title called, are you ready? Afterlife with Archie.
Zombies in the Archie universe, what happens when your favorite characters like Betty, Veronica, Reggie, and so on turn into zombies. Again, it's an ongoing series that begins later on this year from Archie. It's official Carrie Fisher has signed to be in Star Wars once again. Rumors of course had both her, Mark Hamill, and Harrison Ford all set to be in the revival of the Star Wars franchise that begins with Star Wars Episode 7 directed by JJ Abrams and announced by Disney
a few months back. Reports are that Harrison Ford is also signed to revive his Han Solo character. No word yet on anything official involving Mark Hamill though. In case you aren't aware of the recent events in the Batman series of titles, well consider this a spoiler alert. But for the rest of us, well a few changes mostly in the Batman and Robin title which will now have a different one every month starting with number 19. That'll be Batman and the Red Robin. After that the Red Hood,
Batgirl, Catwoman, Nightwing, and so on. Interestingly enough, a number of other bad titles will carry their Requiem logo which will make them more than likely quick sellouts in stores. In fact, it's already started to happen. World's Finest number 10 which is out this week didn't by the way have a Requiem logo but did already sell out. There's a second printing on the way that will have the new title in the cover of the point.
