the point hello it's Mike Raub welcome to the point where all parts of pop culture come together everybody loves a good game even the celebrities and now you get a chance to play along with them and maybe have a little fun on the Hollywood game night we got the rules coming up plus Amazon gets into the comic business and the comic business itself has an okay June let's get to the
point it's a quiz show and a party rolled into one it's the new NBC summer series Hollywood game night hosted by actress Jane Lynch who talked to me a lot about what she had planned for the summer including some of the people she'd like to see come on the show as guest players well we had great I mean we had Amy Poehler and Fred Armisen and Rose Byrne and Martin Short and Matthew
Carey and Lisa Pudrow on the same show we have really great ones but I just did an episode of Katie Couric's talk show and she is dying to be honest so I would love to have her so far any favorite moments on the show man there are so many I mean they've allowed to start rattling them off on Jeff Shepard calling on the judges as if they exist and what we do have judges like yes like judges
you have to look at this Martin Short falling off the couch every time the band starts to play it as if it was a shock to him Amy Poehler and Jason Selekis getting a little bit drunk there were great moments there are wonderful funny crazy moments in every episode everybody's always jumping up and down and high-fiving and shaming each other and it's a lot of fun among the
celebrities who did best well Fred Armisen is very low key and that's deceptive because everybody's jumping up and down around him that perhaps he thinks he's not very game and he was one of the smartest of them all and he was fast maybe not a lot of volume but he was fast and to the point and did very very well so the show invites regular folks to come in and play with the
celebrities and I asked Jane how that mix worked well the thing that happened Jane and I this happens every game I go to including Shawn A's at his house is that it's been great equalizer you forget who's a celebrity and you forget who's the civilian because you just want to win that point and everybody playing together so with glee voice acting and movie roles as well Jane's been pretty
busy and how'd she come to host this well you know I it's funny I don't I don't know what inspired me to do it other than the fact that I actually asked to do it I've known Shawn a long time I have a great time at his game night and he was having dinner over at my house and he mentioned that this show got picked up by NBC and I said well can I host it and he said well let me see so
before I knew it I was on board to do it and I love game night you know I love I'm a pretty competitive person at it you want me on your team you do not want to play against me and I think that you know Shawn knew that I was very familiar with you know all the games and although we did create all of our own games for this so we use Shawn's night at the template the concept of the show came
from actors Shawn Hayes and the game nights at he hosts in his own home he had a few particular games he invented for those nights and some of those made it onto the show well there's your typical game night games and if you haven't got if you don't have a game you haven't been to a game night there's these very simple games that have pop culture references we have one called take a hint
where you have to identify the pop culture well let me get another game that's a harder one to explain let me find another one that's a lot easier to explain oh we'll put up magazine cover and say they're all of Oprah Winfrey and once they put him in chronological order we'll we'll put up you know snapshots of breakfast cereal and you have to name cereal like is that Cap'n Crunch is that
we we have these cross sections of candy bars and you have to identify them is that a butter finger is that a Snickers that sort of thing there's no Tostoy and there's no Shakespeare references it's really all just pop culture and we go into movies we go into entertainment we had we have one game where you identify the covers of the people sexiest men alive covers and you have to put those
in chronological order some of the other games a little more familiar well celebrity is probably my favorite we play around the celebrity at the final round in every game and it's always rousing and I also love a game that is that kind of our version of name that tune where we sing a pop song but using only the words do so you're just strange tonight and so what tips would Jane
give for someone throwing a Hollywood game night in their house you have to come game game you know you have to really want to want to play and you have to really want to win and not be afraid to make a fool out of yourself and really get into it I mean that's what happened with all of our celebrities you would see somebody in the beginning I won't mention name who maybe was a little
intimidated by the level of energy in the level of the decibel of the volume but once they surrendered to it they had the best time and you know the civilians who ended up having to do that too if they're thrown into a room with a bunch of celebrities that they've maybe you know they don't have time to be starstruck they just have to dive in addition all this Jane's hitting the
stage this summer in a new production of Annie sure well you know I'm from Chicago and I started out in the theater there and I haven't been on stage probably in 20 years doing the play so it felt like you know getting back on a bike and it was joyful and continues to be joyful I look forward to going to work every night I love the immediacy of being in a play and you know with the the audience
connection and I love all the people I'm working with and it's just a real joy and kind of it brought me back to you know the reason I got into this crazy business to begin with Jay Lynn chose Hollywood game night Thursdays on NBC and you can always see more right now at NBC dot-com here's the very latest in pop culture IDW is continuing some of the stories began in Star Trek Into the Darkness with a six-issue miniseries that will reveal the origin of Khan
it'll occur just somewhere in the past before the movie and fill in some of the screenwriter Roberto Orsi will also be involved as well in the series will debut from IDW in October fan favorite actress Kristen Bell will be joining the cast of NBC's Parks and Rec in the upcoming season at least for a couple of episodes the series returns to NBC in late September and Kristen's episodes will begin during October it's the biggest eyebrow-raising story of the summer so far but it looks like Amazon is going to be publishing comics Amazon has added a new digital comic imprint to its line and will include works by George RR Martin, Neil Stevenson, Jimmy Palmiati and a lot more
it's called Jet City Comics and again the material will be digital first available for the Kindle and then later published in collections for print the first material should be available online sometime in the early fall Dynamite Comics has announced they're going to be taking a concept that came along in his second season of AMC's comic bookman television series and bring it into a regular issue it's called Cryptozoic Man you might remember that from the second season it was a contest for the guys to create their own comic and that's what they came up with in the show they pitched the comic to Dynamite who claimed they were going to buy it and apparently they did
the creators are from the show Brian Johnson and Walt Flanagan as well and the miniseries will run four issues later this year from Dynamite looks like there might be a second season of Inspector Space Time that's a Dr. Who parody it was featured of course on Community and it spawned a six issue web series last year now the creators going back to Kickstarter to ask for more this time $125,000 which will include some cash actually for his cast and crew longer episodes and maybe some guest stars like Mayim Bialik from Big Bang Theory and Star Trek Voyager's Robert Picardo if the funds are raised plans would be for the episodes to debut online later this year
comic sales in June and the second quarter of 2013 continued to grow but not quite as spectacular as it had in the past in stores comic sales were up a little over 5% graphic novels were down and on the top 10 graphic novel list the independents staked out even more territory we'll cover the entire sales report coming up for you just a little bit it's a story of an aspiring artist named Andrew Vickers who found a bunch of material in an abandoned flat he glued it to a chicken wire frame and created a sculpture he calls Paperboy however upon
investigation it turns out some of that paper was some very valuable comics for example there was an Avengers one in there as well and other vintage comics used to create the sculpture Vickers isn't concerned he said that money hasn't got the same value to him that it has to others however some more knowledgeable fans took a look at the sculpture and they estimate some $30,000 worth of vintage comics were used
