Mix March Madness 2014 Webcomics Tournament Round 1! Vote Now!

UPDATE: Round 1 voting is over. Vote in Round 2 now!

The people have spoken, and the brackets are ready for the Mix March Madness 2014 Webcomics Tournament!

Thanks to the thousands of people who voted in the seeding process, as well as all of you who added your favorite webcomics to the list. We’re adding all of the webcomics you suggested to our directory.

But now, the challenges start!

First, some housekeeping details: There have been a few last minute disqualifications and a few retirements. As such, the numbers look a bit different than the voting rounds might suggest.

Second, we’ve had $142 in bought votes, or an additional 710 votes. Again, all money goes to the Hero Initiative.

Third, once again, we’re offloading our polling to the good folks at Opinion Stage. They’ve upgraded so you can vote with a Facebook ID, Twitter ID, Google+ account, or anonymously. You can still purchase as many votes as you like.

Finally, here are the brackets. As usual, we’re dividing the 128 candidates into four divisions. This year’s divisions are Cardy, Infantino, Morales, and Plastino.

Again, we’re letting you support your favorite strips by paying for additional votes, with your money going to charity. Simply click on the Donate button below, and during checkout, click on “Which comic are you donating for?” and tell us who you’re voting for. The price is 20¢ a vote, with a minimum of five votes purchased at a time, split any way you want. All proceeds from paid votes will go to the Hero Initiative, an organization that helps comic book creators in need. At the close of the round, we’ll add the paid votes to the totals and announce the winners who move on to the brackets. (And yes, your donations to Hero are tax deductible.)

          1. Excellent! Now you have time to turn your attention to the “404 Gunnerkrigg Not Found” issue, right?

  1. Glenn, I did try sending an email requesting this a week ago, but I guess it wasn’t looked at? 🙁

Veronica and I feel that Bittersweet Candy Bowl should no longer be a part of this competition after having won in 2013. It seems like a nice tradition after the winners from 2012 made the same decision to “retire”. So, no matter what, everybody please go on and vote Dr. McNinja, and good luck to every other comic that’s up here!

  2. Just wanted to leave a comment that it would be nice if paid votes showed in the total. I was thinking of buying votes for a comic, but it looks like it is winning; however, I have no way of knowing if that’s actually true. It seems weird not to give people an actual depiction of the polls to base their financial decision on.

    1. We’ve been trying to make a way for that to happen, it’s not easy on The Hero Initiative either to keep track of all the contributions. The problem is non-trivial technically, combined with the problem that if ComicMix does the fund collection instead of Hero, the donations stop being tax-deductible. We keep trying to find ways around that.

We also know that we’d get a lot more money raised, but at a certain point it also becomes a problem of buying wins outright. Granted, this is all for fun, the money goes to charity, and it’s not like there’s anything more at stake than bragging rights– but you’d be amazed how fierce some of the fighting can get and how many people’s feelings get hurt when they feel their votes become less and less significant.

  3. It would be nice to provide a list of comics whose authors (or accepted representatives) have asked to not be included in the voting.

  4. Hey, I mentioned this on a previous post, but it’s still not in the directory – I do a comic called Decrypting Rita, about a robot lady who’s dragged outside of reality by her ex-boyfriend. Can we get it in the directory so it’ll maybe show up in the brackets next year?

  5. Just a note about the image at the top of the page. It still says 2013 tournament. Isn’t this the 2014 tournament?
