The Point Radio. Hey, it's Mike Rive. We've got more with a cast of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. about what it's like to live in the center of what's known as the Marvel Pop Culture Hurricane. Plus, New York Comic Con just days away.
We've got some teasers on what to find at the floor, and our coverage starts right here. Let's get to The Point. This is The Point. The Point Radio. Get The Point Radio.
Go, go, go. New York Comic Con kicks off in just a few days. Here's a little teaser of some of the things going on. Probably the biggest reveal of this year's New York Comic Con will be Marvel's Daredevil series, headed to Netflix right after the first of the year.
For the first time ever, the entire cast will be shown, and of course there'll be signings and all the things to go along with that. Charlie Cox, who plays Matt Murdock, Debra Ann Wool, who plays Karen Page, Vincent D'Onofrio, who plays Kingpin, and more will be there. There'll also be an exclusive poster done by Joe Quesada as well.
The whole event takes place on Saturday at about 3.45 in the Marvel booth, which is number 1354 on the New York Comic Con floor. This year at New York Comic Con, you really can be a superhero. 3DS, along with Cubo, is offering fans a free 3D scan of themselves in costume. You stop by, you're scanned, and well, it'll be one way to look
but you've probably never looked before. Plus you'll have the opportunity to make that a 3D scan into a figurine if you'd like to. For more information, you stop by the 3DS booth on the Comic Con floor. It's booth number 501. IDW is turning out in a big way at New York Comic Con,
with a lot of creators on hand for signings at their booth. Some of the big names include Joe Harris, Walt Simonson, and even Taryn Killiam from Saturday Night Live. You can get more information and stop by and see the whole schedule on the floor at the IDW booth, which is number 1844. There's lots more going on, and of course the best way to find out is to go to the New York Comic Con website,
which is nycc.com. You can also get a free app for Apple or Android in the App Store, and we'll be streaming live video direct from New York Comic Con on our website, GetThePointRadio.com, beginning on Thursday. Don't miss a minute. We're going with the latest in pop culture.
As we told you a few weeks back, the Simpsons are headed to syndication on FXX in August, and of course it is one of the biggest syndication deals ever in TV history. And now there's a big debut as well. The long-running series will get a marathon in the last 12 days, with 552 non-stop Simpson episodes running on the network.
There'll even be a new app for the network involved as well. Official dates for the beginning of the marathon should be announced in a few weeks on FXX. The CW's Seed series Backpackers is transitioning from the web to the network. It'll be the very first project from the Seed to do so. It's a story about a couple of friends who backpack across Europe after one of them is dumped in a relationship.
Material from the web series will be integrated into the first four episodes of the show. There'll be ten episodes that'll run all together, again beginning this summer on the CW. As the world nods in agreement, HBO has announced a renewing Game of Thrones for two more seasons. It'll be on the network at least for seasons five and six. Of course, the premiere delivered some 6.6 million viewers and managed again to crash the HBO Go app on most iPads and on other mobile devices.
By the way, as far as downloads go, yeah, it was pretty much up there as well. Over one million reported illegal torn downloads of the first episode of Game of Thrones for the season. The Marvel continuity machine just keeps cranking on with appearances on the way by Samuel L. Jackson and Colby Smulders on the S.H.I.E.L.D. television series. That'll take place in some episodes set before the series ends for this first run. That'll be during May.
In the meantime, they've announced that the Guardians of the Galaxy will have a direct tie into the Avengers movie, especially leading into the third Avengers film. They say it's all due to Thanos, who'll be pretty much the main character that ties it all together. Stars is jumping into the reality unscripted series market with a return of Project Greenlight. Well, almost Project Greenlight producer Chris Moore has a new series. It takes two independent filmmakers and has them both direct a film from the same script, the same budget and in the same city and see which one premieres to the most success.
It's called The Chair. It'll run 10 episodes and premiere on Stars in the fall. Classic 60s television series Route 66 is coming to Hulu and Hulu Plus. The first season featured some 30 episodes and that'll premiere sometime the next couple of weeks there. In the meantime, season two will follow and it's all put together by entertainment company The Shout Factory.
How would you like to turn up on screen in the second Sharknado movie? Well, it's possible due to a new crowdfunding project that's taking place through Indiegogo. The production company doing the film is hoping to raise some money to do a little more on a scene they're doing that involves chainsaws and sharks. They're hoping that the financing will make the scene better and they're asking for some $50,000 to be contributed by the end of May. For those who contribute and get everything from a t-shirt all the way to a walk-on part of the movie, depending upon the amount of money that you do contribute, you can check it out on Indiegogo.
And the project, of course, is Sharknado 2, the second one, which is set to air in July on Sci-Fi. The point, the point. Good month for DC and a good month for comic sales overall in comic book stores, with sales being up a considerable amount, just about 3%, and pretty much a flat year so far for 2014. And in the long run, that's good because early in the year, we were way under the mark. And now comics go into the fourth quarter of the year in the positive side of the ledger, and things pretty good for DC too, taking the month in market share 36.5% to 32% for Marvel, despite the death of Wolverine.
Last time DC did this, well, that was last October when they had their other big event, so Futures End is certainly a player in this. And you'll find out that is true as we look at the top 10 best-selling comics for the month in comic stores. Number 10, Batman Superman, Futures End number 1, number 9, Justice League number 33, Detective Comics Futures End at number 8, Original Sin number 8 from Marvel at number 7, Justice League Futures End number 1 at number 6, Amazing Spider-Man number 6 was the fifth best-selling book. Harley Quinn Futures End number 1 at number 4, Batman Futures End number 1 at number 3, and Death of Wolverine number 2 came in at number 2 in the number 1 best-selling book in September in comic stores, Death of Wolverine number 1 from Marvel. As fans of the show know, the latter part of that first season of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ended up with some pretty big turmoil.
The secrets that were revealed in Captain America's Winter Soldier greatly affected the show. But imagine what it was like months earlier in the writers' room. Jed Whedon and Marissa Tangier are in the explain. In our first meetings we were talking about what the show could be and where it could go and different approaches. And at some point, I think it was actually Joss who told us that, yeah, there's a script you're going to have to read that's going to change that. Things change and there may not be a shield anymore. And we said, excuse me, what?
There's something that happens. Oh, what is it? That sounds exciting. What is it? They destroy a shield. Yeah. Oh, all right. Well, there's that. Yeah, we knew going in. We knew going in. We had to build and plan around that. We had to absolutely hide the hydro ball the entire season, not mention anything or allude to any sort of sleeper spy. Any sort of that kind of concept of a sleeper spy could never ever come up with a traitor amongst us. A traitor, nothing. And now we can do it all the time. Yeah, we can do it all the time.
Fans continue to clamor for more of the traditional Marvel characters to appear. But how do you keep the show accessible to a wide audience that falls to Jeffrey Bell and Jeff Lowe, the executive producers who explain how they keep it in balance in fairness. We were doing it anyway. I mean, you know, it was there. Maria Hill was there. John Garrett was there. Black. I mean, we can go on and go on and go on. So, you know, I think if anyone was making that, they weren't watching the show.
So, but to answer your question, we absolutely have a lot of new characters that are coming on the show that they have direct ties into the Marvel publishing universe that we have not yet see turn up in the Marvel Cinematic. I think you have a piece of that as we were making a show and network television that we wanted everyone to enjoy and not just the ZYHUG fans who knew every character. And so part of that is trying to find a balance between keeping those very devoted people happy and having a larger tent. And so as we invite more people in the tent, I think we can make more references within that. And in general, when you stop and you like, when you look at our movies, our movies are built around the idea.
And I hear it all the time. You have to make the movie as though no one has ever read a comic book, seen these people, have any understanding of who they are. And if you then fall in love with them, you'll go anywhere. You'll believe a man can put a tinsuit on and fly around. And that's the trick, you know, and I don't think that the crew gets enough credit for the fact that we put together a show that with the exception of Agent Coulson, who was created in one of the movies, not in the publishing group, he created five brand new characters who they cared enormously about. For some of the cast members, the world of Marvel Comics may be a little new. Chloe Bennett, who plays Skye, told me that while most of the Marvel Comics haven't always been a major part of her world, they certainly are now.
Of course, it's my whole world at this point. I can honestly say that obviously since being cast in the show, I've become an even bigger fan. I've always been a fan of the Marvel movies. I do have six brothers, so comic books and sports and action stuff has been around. My house, I mean, way more than Disney Princesses and, you know, whatever. So I think more than most girls probably, but definitely being a part of this world, you kind of have to be. I mean, it's always on my mind. Season two of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with new episodes every Tuesday on ABC.
And you can always see more online on demand too at ABC. And those of the podcast, but a busy week rolls on here.
