The Point Radio: Farewell To LOST GIRL

It’s the fifth and final season for the SyFy supernatural show, LOST GIRL. Series star Anna Silk talks about her favorite moments (and the things she grabbed from the set on the last day) plus BITTEN’s Laura Vandervoort talks more about her show’s new season and what it was like to be TV’s first Supergirl.

The Point Radio. Hey, it's Mike Roth. It's season five and the wrap-up for the supernatural thriller Lost Girl on sci-fi. And series star Anna Silke is along to reminisce about how she enjoyed the role and what's next in her career. Plus, same night, a little bit earlier, it's Biffen in the second season of the werewolf drama.

So has Laura Vanderboer in the lead, but did you realize that she also was the very first supergirl on TV? What was that like? Let's get to the point. This is The Point, The Point Radio. Get The Point, Radio.

It's not only season five for the sci-fi supernatural thriller Lost Girl, but it's the final season for the show. And one of the first things I wanted to know when I talked to series star Anna Silke is whether or not she had time to grab any momentos from the set so far. No, I took a lot of bow clothes, which they were so generous to have. But I also took both red kimono because that was not played in episode eight, season one, which was our first. That was our original pilot.

And that kimono sort of played really heavily in this big fight scene I did. And I just, it was such a symbol of what I was in for in terms of the magnitude of playing bow. So I always loved that kimono. So I have that. And I also have the the spy dagger that Lisa, who was our Lisa and props in Victoria, who were part of our props team, designed for bow.

And it's kind of a symbol of how strong she is. It was also cut specifically to emphasize curves. So it really kind of embodies the succubus and the kick-ass nature of both. I have that as well. Five seasons.

What did Anna like about playing the character bow? What I loved about her was just how, you know, as strong as she was, she was continuously vulnerable and open and sort of always putting herself out there. And so I love that part of her. I don't know what I would change, honestly. It's a good question.

But it's I like that she was flawed. So to change any of that would take away who she is. So I'd have to say nothing. I would change nothing about her. Everybody takes away something different from a show like this.

We talked to Anna's cast member Zoe Palmer. Gosh, that's a it's a feels like a big question because there's you know, as we come to the end, it feels like there's so much. I everything comes rushing back to me. You know, I think they I don't know, you know, with such a team of both the the characters and and the cast, you know, and and I think there's something about that that I that that sticks with me, you know, having having had a little bit of time away from the actual filming of it now. It's just I see the dynamic of the team of everybody and how how those characters sort of interacted and and move through the five seasons and move through the trials and tribulations on of the show.

And and yeah, I mean, it might sound a little tight, but there's something about that that I think I hope that people are sort of blessed with that sense of, you know, togetherness and helping each other out and that sort of thing. So a long time fans going to be satisfied with the way things wrap up by ass both Anna and Zoe. I think some are going to be happy and some aren't. Oh, okay. I mean, yeah, you know, I think that's a good thing. I think that I think that's a really good thing.

I think that some people are going to feel that that, you know, exactly how they want imagined it to be is how it probably isn't some people, you know, because everybody's different. And and and well, scroll isn't wishy washy and it never has been so I so I think I think people will appreciate that. However, they feel about it after five seasons. What's been Anna's favorite so far? Oh, my gosh. Well, you know, I feel like my favorite one to shoot was this last one because I feel like we really well, we just kind of kept getting better and better and getting our stride. And I feel like season five would really hit our stride. And for Boa in particular, she's just so forceful in this last season that I love playing that.

And I love just the, you know, if if if any season bonded us even more, it was this last one because we knew it was our last one. So we were all very, very extra close and extra supportive of each other. So it was great. And next, what does Anna have coming up on the acting agenda? What else they have coming up? That is a good question. I'm actually I took a very deliberate break after last fall. I felt like I needed needed a break creatively just to kind of take it all in and take my time in terms of moving on to other projects.

I also really wanted to have some time with my son that was really quality time. And so I've been really enjoying that, to be perfectly honest. And I feel like Ross Girl was such a perfect fit. And it was it was it was just it was the right time for that character and for me to meet. And I feel like I want to sort of wait and look at different projects and certainly looking at different projects and reading a lot of great material and and and thinking about the next step. But I don't really know, to be honest.

The final season of Lost Girl with new episodes every Friday on Sci-Fi. Here it is, the latest in pop culture. CBS has added another layer in a way to say goodbye to David Letterman before he steps away from his late night gig in May. It's a new web series called Legends on Letterman featuring musical performances in the past 21 years of the show. Bonford and Sons is the first guest on the webisode, which premieres on May the 5th. And you'll be able to get all those at cbs.com or on the CBS apps.

Remember just about a year ago when we were all excited about Emerald City, the possibility of a TV series based on the Wizard of Oz. And then, of course, things went awry and the whole project was scrapped. Well, now it looks like NBC is reviving the project with a 10 episode order. David Schuller from the event has been taking over a showrunner for the project. Josh Friedman will continue to be an E.P. and writer for it.

And along those same lines, about the same time you were more than likely a little upset about the cancellation of Revolution from NBC. And a lot of closure that you didn't get with that. Well, the producers have promised to bring closure to the series with a four issue digital comic book. It's a project that involves Eric Kripke, JJ Abrams, Rockneast O'Bannon, and Jon Favreau as well. It's being done in cooperation with DC Comics and writers David Reed and Ryan Parrott.

We'll be writing the project as well. The co-venture between NBC and DC Comics should appear sometime later this year. Geek Suit Drink is the new sci-fi game show headed to the channel later this summer. Yes, it is based on the popular pub game. Zach Levy, former star of Chuck, will be the executive producer and the host for the show.

It will premiere on the network on July 16th. So what TV is hot on Twitter? Well, the top five most discussed shows this past week include American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, WWE Monday Night Raw, Game of Thrones, a number two, and at the top the 2015 MTV Movie Awards. Speaking of game, by the way, the premiere episode delivered some 8 million viewers,

and that's tallied up even before we start counting who recorded on their DVRs. As a new series high and a new record, of course, for HBO. More Jerry Seinfeld's comedians and cars getting coffee is just part of the plans for Crackle coming up for the rest of this year. Announces were made about some new programming editions, including, of course, David Spade's sequel to the 2001 film Joe Dirt, which is set for sometime later this year.

The Black List is coming to comics. Titan Publications will be the publisher, and the creators involved include Benny Lobel, who has drawn things like True Blood and Smallville in recent days, and will be written by Nicole Phillips. The first issue of the Black List is scheduled to be in comic stores on July 22nd. Orange is the New Black has got a Season 4 go-ahead from the folks at Netflix.

The third season is set to debut on the streaming service on June 12th. Fourth season should debut sometime in the summer of 2016. The point, the point. Not a lot of growth for graphic novel sales for the first part of 2015 when compared to last year, and certainly no growth when compared to March of 2014.

March almost a flat month with even a little bit of a decline for graphic novel sales. And interestingly enough, well, a couple of publishers already been represented in the top ten. Those top ten best-selling graphic novels started number ten in the first entry yet from Dynamite Entertainment. Bob's Burgers, volume one is there. At number nine, Birthright, volume one from Image.

At number eight, Deadly Class, volume two also from Image. At number seven, Dead Bull, The Art of War. At number six, Dead Bull, the seventh grade paperback, Axis. At number five, Saga, the fourth volume, trade paperback there again from Image. It pretty much dominates the top ten.

Hawkeye versus Dead Bull was the fourth best-selling graphic novel. Number three was Lo, the trade paperback. Volume one, The Delirium of Hope from Image. At number two, The Ms. Marvel's second volume, Generation Way from Marvel. And the number one best-selling graphic novel for the month goes to IDW with Nemo, River of Ghosts.

It's the hardcover version from that company. So we're having a DC, well, just checking the list, the highest-ranked DC graphic novel for the month comes at number 14. And that was Justice League, the trade paperback, volume five, Forever Heroes. The point, the point. Actors Laura Vandiver told me she's more than ready for the new season of Bitten on Sci-Fi.

As the only female werewolf in the pack, she's pretty much dominated the first season. But that's changing a little bit with the addition of Witches to the storyline. And that puts a new spin on the show dynamic. I mean, for me personally, I love having women on set. I've been surrounded by all of these guys for the entire first season.

So I was very excited to have people I could just cope with and joke around with. But having the Witches on the show, it changes the dynamic of the pack. Each one of us sort of develops a relationship with one of the Witches. And also the look of the show is different this year because there's witchcraft. It's more of an eerie sorcery vibe to the show.

And they're bringing in powers that our species has no way of handling. I mean, we're brute force and strength. And these Witches have supernatural elements that we can't stop and we've never dealt with. So it's a new issue and thing that the pack has to deal with this season. And yeah, I just love having the women there.

So what's coming up? How about changes in relationships between some of the established characters? The characters have been through a lot in the first season. And Elena having lost her human boyfriend who was decapitated in the finale last year. This season picks up three days later.

So she's seeing red and after revenge. And her relationship with Clay is definitely solidified. I mean, they are together. It is her one true love. But things do get in the way of that.

And Jeremy, who's the pack alpha at the end of the first season, I discovered that he had betrayed me and he'd been lying to me the entire time. So that relationship's a little askew as well. There's a lot happening this season. It's really intense.

I asked Laura what drew her to this role in the first place. They actually came to me. I wasn't aware of the books. There's a series of novels by Kelly Armstrong. He's a wonderful Canadian author and New York Times bestseller.

And the series takes place in Canada. It was filmed in Canada. And they came to me to see if I was interested. So I read the first book and I found her to be a very layered character. I mean, the werewolf aspect of her was sort of the last thing on the list of things that I loved.

It was the one thing that I was a little concerned about. But then I spoke to our executive producer about how he saw the show looking and the vibe of the show and how Close Speed states the books. And it sounded like a role that I was going to be challenged by. And I was excited to be a part of it.

We certainly have to point out that Laura was the very first supergirl on television for turning the role of Kara Kent on the series Smallville. Yeah, I mean, that was a great experience being on Smallville and being the first one on television. And I would do it again. It was a rewarding experience.

And I loved the fan response and going to Comic Con. And I'd love to be a part of a blockbuster. Most actors are going to say that. A feature film. I'd love to work with Marvel.

There's a lot of characters that I would want to be a part of. Most of them have been cast already. But hopefully in the future. So what about a dream role? Anything you'd like to tackle?

I have a list. I'd love to do a period piece. I've never done that. But I just started watching Game of Thrones. And I would love to be Khaleesi.

I think she's such a powerful character and intelligent and beautiful. So that would be a lot of fun. Gosh. Mad Men, a character in there would have been fantastic. Breaking Bad.

I have a list. Those shows are over. Away from the cameras, one of Laura's biggest passions are animals. Well, you know, I worked with PETA and the Humane Society. And a lot of those campaigns that I was a part of, one was with SeaWorld for Blackfish.

And the other was exotic skins for PETA. And then the Humane Society is banning animal testing on products. So a lot of these things are really just consumers educating themselves on what they can do themselves. Because it just takes each person to make a little bit of a change to make a change in the world. And, you know, with banning animal testing for products, it's reading the label, looking online, educating yourself.

There's so many products available that you can be using. There's so much existing knowledge that, you know, companies do not need to test on animals anymore. They can go back to the existing knowledge and base everything on that. And, you know, if you saw Blackfish, which I did, and I became very emotional about, which is why I got involved, it's, again, educating yourselves.

Don't believe, you know, the hype on the other end of that. Try to not take your children to SeaWorld as hard as that might be. You know, there are other options. Go out into the wild. I've seen killer whales in the wild take cot.

And just try to do those little things when you can. I know it's hard, and oftentimes it's a little frustrating. But not buying exotic skins, getting the faux furs, that sort of thing. Get the look for – get the same look without the pain that it causes. New episodes of Bitten, the second season right now on Sci-Fi every Friday.
