Hello, it's Mike Raub. Welcome to The Point, where all parts of pop culture come together, extraordinary people with extraordinary abilities, and JFK. It's a retelling of history by the guy who told the story of heroes. And we'll tell you just where you can get it.

Get the Point. Radio. Tim Craig, the crazy force behind heroes, is turning to yet another medium, with a new story that welds together history, fantasy, and of course, people with extraordinary abilities.
It's called Shift. It's a book co-written with Dale Peck. And in there, Tim begins a healthy retelling of some very familiar history. Well, as you said, it was an attempt to sort of weave a lot of stuff together. I wanted to do an historical thriller.
And I became very interested in some research that I was doing about these early CIA LSD experiments that were done in the late 50s and 60s, a program called MKUltra. And I started to think about how LSD played a really interesting role in the last 50 years of history, starting back then. And this tells the story of a character who has a one in a million brain chemistry that
when he takes LSD, it actually alters his brain chemistry so that he can have kind of extra sensory powers and kind of superpowers, if you will. And this embroiled him in a kind of secret world. And he discovers a conspiracy to assassinate President Kennedy. And that's the first book.
The other two books yet to be written sort of tell the next one starts 25 years later and the one after that in present day. And so in a way, it sort of is, as you said, a retelling of history with a slightly hallucinogenic alternate reality view. So with a wide palette of fantasy creators whose work he's enjoyed, where does Tim get
his inspiration? Well, it has certain combinations of some current and recent authors like Philip K. Dick and Robert Ludlam. There's bits of Don DeLillo in there as well. It's meant to be a real page turner, but the historical aspect has certain aspects
of Philip K. Dick with the actual historical characters woven into it. So in a sense, in my writing is very, I think, in a very filmic kind of way and a very efficient kind of way. So it was written with short scenes in mind and kind of almost screenplay kind of scenes in mind.
So, you know, it's always hard to say where you draw your inspiration. But once you once you really get into something, it's all those inspirations sort of go away and you're just telling a story on your, you know, kind of in your own sense. Since shift is part of a much larger setting, as Tim explained, does he want to take it into other mediums, for example, like comics?
Well, I wrote it with the idea that it could become a movie, a series of movies. I worked with a writer named Dale Pack and we really talked a lot about the idea of how to create it, you know, a book that had a very cinematic and filmic quality to it. And yes, the graphic novels is something I'm also very interested in. I think it would make, you know, as I said, the visuals of the book are really designed
for something like that. And what about the new mediums? What about a web series? You know, I'm very involved in that and very fascinated by it. I just got back from a month in London where we did a huge multi-platform project that
I created called Conspiracy for Good and that told a story across both online, on mobile and rolled out into the real world with actual street, sort of street theater and kind of scavenger hunt involvement on the streets of London. And so I am very fascinated in that and very fascinated by the idea of the iPad and mobile. I think this idea that especially mobile where you have this device that is not only
a content consumption device but a content creation device. You can create videos and it knows where your friends are and knows where you are and has GPS. So in a sense for a storyteller, it opens up an entire world of, you know, of pushing content to people wherever they are.
You know, we're very rarely offline these days. We're almost always connected and which gives a sort of opportunity for a guy like me who wants to tell a story to reach people where they live and where they are. And it just, I think, it opens up just sort of brand new kind of exciting sort of vistas as a storyteller.
Of course, we had to last the inevitable heroes question, where do we go from here? A movie? A comic? Well, it's very funny that you say that because that's the part that is most interesting to me.
I think the heroes universe that was created posited a world that was sort of wide open with an infinite number of characters and infinite number of stories. And as you know, we really push the boundaries of storytelling across multiple platforms or what was referred to as transmedia storytelling with what we call the 360 platform around the show.
It's a series of content that existed online and on mobile. And so to me, that is really the place to really push this is that I really feel like this universe is very ripe to just keep spinning and spinning and telling stories and perfectly designed for these new platforms. or you can get it easily online at amazon.com. It's Monday, August 16th, 2010. Here's what's going on in pop culture. It took a lot of muscle to get to the top of the box office this weekend. And that's exactly what the expendables had.
Climbing over eat, pray, love and putting a foot in the throat of Scott Pilgrim versus the world at the end of the box office weekend. Well, it didn't really matter how many people in San Diego were totally in love with Scott Pilgrim. It did not translate to ticket sales.
Number one with a little over $35 million eat, pray, love came in at number two with the high part of the $23 million mark. Other guys was down the number three with another 18 million there inception at number four with another 11 million bringing its total so far to just under 250 million. And then a number five, there was Scott Pilgrim with a paltry $10 million, 10 and a half to
be fair for this weekend in ticket sales. Something like what was expected at least considering the warm reception had gotten not only in San Diego, but all over the internet for the past few weeks. Rest of the top 10 included step up 3d with another 6 million there and dinner for schmucks down to number nine with another 6 million there as well.
Just under 60 million so far for that movie. Next summer marks the end of the long running series entourage on HBO. HBO has said that they are going to bring to a close at the series next summer with only six episodes in that season in an effort to get it all done sometime during 2011. No word yet on whether or not that long rumored entourage movie is still in the green lit category.
Comic creator and host of frequency right here on the point radio Mark Wheatley has been doing a graphic novel called loan justice along with the talented writer Robert to know it's been appearing on ComicMix for a while and now is appearing in a regular trade paperback form from the folks at IDW. But just in time for the Baltimore comic con in a few weeks there's an exclusive signed
and numbered edition to be available. The regular edition of loan justice volume one won't be in the comic stores until sometime in the September month. But fans will get assigned limited convention exclusive edition at the Baltimore show on August 28th and 29th.
Mark Wheatley Robert to know an editor might go to be on hand to celebrate the sneak peek edition. It's limited to just 50 copies. So you got to hit the dealers room early if you're going to Baltimore to get the edition that includes a special illustrated signature plate.

Something big came out of the Star Wars celebration last weekend that the news that the original trilogy will be on Blu-ray released sometime during 2011. But even better than that in an on stage interview George Lucas revealed that included in those Blu-ray releases will be some deleted scenes that we have not seen yet.
Some of which are pretty cool. There's one that's already been leaked to the Internet. You can catch that on our website get the point radio dot com and then be ready for the Blu-ray release of the original Star Wars trilogy on Blu-ray like we said in 2011. As far as the prequels go well do you really care.
Look for another TV favor to be going away soon. Direct TV has confirmed that the fifth season of Friday Night Lights will be the last. As you know Direct TV has been premiering the episodes a season ahead of what NBC shows. NBC aired the fourth season finale on Friday. And now Direct TV and NBC will both present the fifth season sometime in the near future
and that'll be it for Friday Night Lights except of course for a long life on the TV D shows. Marvel's beginning a new series spinning out of World War Hulks. That is She-Hulk's first issue to hit stores in November. Harrison Wilcox and Ryan Stegman will be the creative team.
There will be a cover on the first issue by Ed McGinnis and of course the Mad Thinker, the Red Ghost, the Trapster, the Wizard. They're all going to be in the book too as well. All part of the current Hulk landscape going on to both in Hulk and Incredible Hulk. Check with your retailer now.
He's just about ready to place the order for She-Hulk's number one which as we said will be in stores for Marvel in November. For months now DC has been teasing us about an ongoing Batwoman series. In fact it was pretty much thought it would take place sometime over the summer with the first issue being in stores a long time ago.
Now it looks like the tease continues in November with a Batwoman number zero hinging off giving us at least a little taste of what will happen. Right now DC plans on a regular Batwoman series to take place sometime next year more than likely hitting comic stores in February. The creative team includes J.H.
Williams III and Amy Reader. They'll be alternating story arcs on the series. It'll be co-written by Williams and W. Hayden Blackman as well. Batwoman zero coming in November and hopefully a new Batwoman regular series to debut right after the first of the year maybe in February or so from DC Comics.
Seems like Marvel can't get enough Thor into the comic stores. You think there's a movie on the way. Right now there's a new series Astonishing Thor. It's a limited one from Rob Rody and Mike Choi. Coming up it's not too far from right now.
It includes the usual deal for Marvel a first issue a for the grand variant cover and a lot more. Astonishing Thor covers pretty much what happened to the character right out of siege and put some major repercussions in the timeline for the God of Thunder. Marvel also says this new series is a great jumping on point for readers.
Astonishing Thor number one in stores for Marvel in November. Spencer's Morning Glories published recently by Image Comics is sold out according to Image. The series takes place at Morning Glory Academy one of the more prestigious prep schools in the country.
But behind the doors are something sinister and very deadly and six brilliant but troubled new students find themselves trapped and desperately seeking answers. Morning Glory is number one. The second printing will be available in September in comic stores. Look for issue number two not too far behind that from Image.
Shadowland continues to be highly successful for Marvel. Shadowland number two and Shadowland Bullseye number one. Both sold out there'll be a Shadowland number two second printing variant and a Shadowland Bullseye number one second printing variant as well. Coming not too far from right now.
Look for both of those in comic stores. More than likely sometime during the first part of September talk to your retailer to make sure you get both of those as well if you'd like to. Well plenty of Shadowland tie ins continue on the comic shelves this week and the third issue of Shadowland set the debut in a couple of weeks for Marvel.
Little Water Productions has picked the latest candidate for their biography comics and that is the cast of Glee. They're calling the issue Fame the cast of Glee obviously because they probably couldn't use the word Glee in a title. It covers pretty much the major characters of the show in their biographies actors Leah
Michelle Matthew Morrison Jane Lynch and a lot more and creator Ryan Murphy as well. Cameron Cook Patrick McCormick and Ben Brady are all handling the creative work on this. It'll be in stores in November but if you'd like to see an exclusive look at some of the pages from the Glee comic. Radar online dot com is the place to go.

Because Spider-Man Why am I not thrilled? Maybe because the idea of a Spider-Man musical is stupid. Maybe because the Superman musical sucked. Maybe because Spider-Man 3 was too much of a musical for my taste.
Or maybe because it's called Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark. Directed by The Lion King's Julie Taymor, the musical will sport toe tapping tunes by Bono and the Edge, evidently because Elton John was busy. It stars a bunch of folks most of us have never heard of. Rachel Wood and Alan Cummings bailed out some time ago. With great power comes great responsibility
That's the catchphrase of old Uncle Ben If you missed it, don't worry, they'll say the line Again and again and again Oh la la la There's no word about Stan Lee doing a cameo, but I sure hope somebody will try to comp Steve Ditko.
With a budget in the neighborhood of $50 million, Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark is one of the most expensive Broadway musicals of all time. It opens December 21 and previews start November 14. Second prices are likely to be about $125 a piece, take a family of four to Spider-Man after dinner, and you're in for about a grand total. Our top five list begins with the return of one of comics' oldest characters, now in the hands of Dynamic Forces in the first issue of their version of The Phantom. It's this week.
Under the eye of the talent of Alex Ross, it's called The Last Phantom and again the first issue out. It's the second issue of IDW's adaptation of HBO's hit True Blood. If you missed the first one, which did sell out, there's a second printing on the way. Here's your chance to catch up with the second issue. The classic Archie Comics newspaper strips are adapted in a beautiful new hardcover this week.
The first of what we hope will be a few volumes also from IDW and from Image this week, Hack Slash collected in an omnibus trade paperback. You probably heard a lot about this all over and maybe you just kind of skipped some of the issues from the different publishers that have had the chance to bring Hack Slash into comic stores. Well now's your chance to get those early issues in one collection. And finally also from Image, one of our favorite comics for a long time. Not necessarily a regular publication, but every time we get a new issue of True Story Swear to God, I strongly recommend you pick it up.
It's an easy book to follow without having read anything previously. This is issue number 13 out this week from Image. All these and more in a comic store around America and hopefully close to you.
