Wold Newton series: Time’s Last Gift

Win Scott Eckert has shared the following information on Time’s Last Gift by Philip Jose Farmer.

For immediate release:

U.K publisher Titan Books has entered into an agreement with the Estate of Philip Jose Farmer to bring a large selection of Mr. Farmer’s backlist titles back into print.

Significantly, many of the books which are a part of the arrangement initially were published as standalone novels, but came to be considered part of Mr. Farmer’s ongoing Wold Newton Family cycle.

Now, for the very first time, these novels will be published and packaged as a formal part of a Wold Newton series.

Second in Titan’s lineup is Mr. Farmer’s Time’s Last Gift, a time travel novel featuring a well known Lord of the Jungle, whose initials, TLG, happen to match the abbreviation of the book’s title. First published in 1972, and revised in 1977, Time’s Last Gift is one of Mr. Farmer’s finest novels, and serves as a prequel to his series of books featuring the land of Khokarsa in Ancient Africa (Hadon of Ancient Opar, Flight to Opar, and the forthcoming The Song of Kwasin.)

Time’s Last Gift is currently scheduled for release in June 2012, and will be available at major outlets such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Editions will include trade paperback and digital (Kindle & Nook).

Anne McCaffrey, 1926-2011

Tor.com reports the sad news that Anne McCaffrey, best known for the Dragonriders of Pern series, passed away of a stroke in her home in Ireland yesterday at the age of 85.

McCaffrey was the first woman to win a Hugo Award (for the first Dragonrider story “Weyr Search” in 1968) as well as the first woman to win a Nebula Award (for the second Dragonrider story “Dragonrider” in 1969) and the first author to hit the New York Times Bestseller List with an SFF title (The White Dragon, the third book in the series).

In 1991 Dragonflight, the first Pern book published, was adapted as a set of three graphic novels by Eclipse. The first two were illustrated by Lela Dowling and Fred Von Tobel, the third by Lela Dowling and Cynthia Martin. The story was adapted by Brynne Stevens.

She was an incredibly gracious lady, and will be missed.

Harvey Pekar statue fundraiser surpasses $30,000 goal, 13 days early

Way to go, [[[American Splendor]]] fans!

Donors have given enough money to honor author Harvey Pekar with a desk and sculpture to be installed at the Cleveland Height-University Heights Public Library.

Joyce Brabner, Pekar’s widow, said in early November that $30,000 had to be raised by Dec. 5, for his tribute.

The campaign, started online at Kickstarter, had already raised $30,787 through Monday with 669 backers, according to Carole Wallencheck, a reference associate with the library.

With 13 days to go before the deadline, Wallencheck said any surplus donations will be given to the library to buy graphic novels.

‘V For Vendetta’ Inspires Shepard Fairey’s New ‘Occupy Hope’ Poster

Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s V For Vendetta continues to inspire as a symbol of resistance. Here’s the latest version.

L.A. street artist Shepard Fairey has released a second original design for the Occupy Wall Street movement — and this time, instead of playing it safe with a wistful scene out of an Angela Davis documentary, he’s given his own (in)famous HOPE poster from Obama’s first election campaign a rebellious makeover.

It uses all the same colors and graphic-design aesthetics as the original. Only difference is, Fairey has replaced President Obama’s heavenward gaze with a “V for Vendetta” Guy Fawkes mask — one of the key props used by Occupy Wall Street protesters.

Across the bottom, the poster reads…

… “Mister President, we HOPE you’re on our side” (little passive-aggressive there?), and it’s stamped with a “We are the 99 percent” logo.

For one last dose of irony, Fairey recycles the same red-white-and-blue “O” he once used as Obama’s first initial into a ring around the “99 percent” slogan.

Dwayne McDuffie and Earl Kress to Receive WGAW Animation Writing Awards

I guess the write-in campaign worked. Applause to the Writers Guild for honoring these guys.

Dwayne McDuffie and Earl Kress are set to receive the Writers Guild of America, West Animation Writers Caucus’ 14th annual Animation Writing Award posthumously. The honor recognizes their animation writing work and their efforts to organize animation for the guild.

“This year, animation lost two talented, hard-working people who have given much of themselves and their talent to our field,” said AWC chair Craig Miller. “Dwayne McDuffie was a talented writer and creator of comics and animation who worked hard for others, particularly for minority writers. Earl Kress was a writer whose career included both feature and TV animation and hard work on behalf of all animation writers as a member of the WGA Animation Writers Caucus and the Animation Guild Board of Directors. Both were people I was glad to call friend and colleague, and whose efforts, it can truthfully be said, made all of us the better for them.”

This reminds me to renew my membership in the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (no, they aren’t called to defend this one, but they do great work both here and abroad):

The trial in Tunisia over the broadcasting the animated Iranian film [[[Persepolis]]] was cut short Thursday after an uproar in the courtroom. Lawyers for the two sides shouted at each other and exchanged insults inside the courtroom, prompting the judge to adjourn the trial until Jan. 23. The controversy over the film illustrates how Tunisia, the country that started the wave of uprisings that have swept through the Arab world this year, is struggling to work out the role of Islam in society after years of officially enforced secularism.The privately owned Nessma television station provoked an angry reaction last month when it broadcast a dubbed version of Iranian director Marjane Satrapi’s award-winning adaptation of her graphic novels about growing up during Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.The film, which won the jury prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, contains a scene showing a character representing God. Depictions of God are considered sacrilege in Islam.
