‘The Walking Dead’ shambles to new TV ratings record

For those who think the comics/Hollywood connection is played out, it seems there’s still life in something that’s dead.

Season two of “[[[The Walking Dead]]]” opened to an eye-popping 7.3 million viewers on Sunday, and it broke cable ratings records in the key demographic categories of adults 18-49 and adults 25-54.

The preem averaged 4.8 million adults 18-49 and 4.2 million in the 25-54 demo — a new record for a basic cable drama series. It also easily ranked as primetime’s No. 1 entertaiment series for the night, according to Nielsen, topping the 18-49 delivery of Fox’s special “The X Factor” (4.2 million adults 18-49), ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” (3.4 million) and CBS’ “CSI: Miami” (3 million). AMC

AMC prexy Charlie Collier called the numbers “staggering, just like our zombies.”

Fast Company interviews Morgan Spurlock about San Diego Comic-Con Documentary

Morgan Spurlock at the Sundance Film Festival ...

Fast Company talks with Morgan Spurlock about his documentary Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope (which comes with a companion book that Spurlock describes as “If Taschen made your high school geek yearbook”), how his generation liberated creativity for the basement-dwelling set, and how video games are the next gen’s comic books.

Organizers had routinely denied previous requests to document the event, fearing a public mocking of a misunderstood subculture. But that all changed when Morgan Spurlock Super Size Me, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold came calling with the support of his “geek dream team”: comics legend Stan Lee, Ain’t It Cool News’ Harry Knowles, writer Jeremy Chilnick, and wunderkind producer Joss Whedon Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly.

Cartoon Network and the way Retro was

I was informed that the Atlanta-based network would launch a 24-hour “Cartoon Network.” The thought was mind-blowing! … I’d always been a reluctant follower of Hanna-Barbera’s post-1960 TV cartoon roster, but I’d always acknowledged how the potent narcotic of nostalgia could jostle my level of taste.

The New York show, which opened Thursday night at the Jacob K. Javits Center in Manhattan, bounced around the calendar for a couple of years before finding a home in October last year, when 96,000 fans made the trek to New York to attend.

Organizers expect attendance at the show, now in its sixth year, to surpass 100,000 this year. And while its rival in San Diego grapples with growing pains, New York Comic Con is finding its footing.

It looks like The Lone Ranger will ride after all: TheWrap has confirmed that Disney is close to a deal to revive the Johnny Depp movie. In August, the company halted production on the big-budget project, which stars Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as the masked man. Gore Verbinski is directing and Jerry Bruckheimer is producing. An individual close to the project told TheWrap on Tuesday that while a deal to get the project back in production is not yet finalized, it appears imminent.
