Eartha Kitt Dies

Eartha Kitt died today at the age of 81 from colon cancer.

Known worldwide as a self-proclaimed "sex kitten", famous for her catlike purr, Kitt was an incredibly versatile performer, winning two Emmys and nabbing a third nomination, as well as Tony and Grammy nominations, but probably best known for her role as Catwoman on the 1960’s Batman TV series, replacing Julie Newmar in 1967; and for singing the song "Santa Baby". She was once dubbed the "most exciting woman in the world" by Orson Welles– an assessment that’s hard to dispute.

She said in an interview for Harper’s Bazaar that "a gentleman who wrote [the late 1960s TV series] Batman said he wrote that character especially for me. He said, ‘You are a cat, you look like a cat, you act like a cat.’ "

If only she had eight more lives…

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

May you all find what you’re looking for, be it peace, love, courage, funding, or that copy of Superman #74 in very fine or better.

We bring you a little bit of a New York holiday tradition as you open your presents:

Through next year we all will be together, if the fates allow. Even if we have to muddle through somehow.

Santa vs. Superman

Man, they’re weird up in Nova Scotia.

If only they had the budget for that climactic battle at the Fortress of Solitude.

Related: this essay as to who’s faster: Superman, the Flash, or Santa Claus:

Even moving at an amazing 1 million miles per hour, Santa simply is no match for Superman or Flash, yet the latter two don’t stuff their faces with sugary cookies and whole milk 2,700.6 times per second.

Governor Batman, NM?

From Politico:

Back in September Anne Schroder reported that actor Val Kilmer was mulling a New Mexico Governor’s run.

And now that Bill "Bolo Tie" Richardson is Commerce Secretary to Be, well….there’s an opening.

Folks in Albuquerque spotted the bloated star at a basketball game last night.

The Albuquerque Journal’s caption: What was a movie star doing at the Lobo game vs. Oral Roberts? Especially in the company of former GOP state Rep. and lobbyist Joe Thompson, left, and Santa Fe businessman Jerry Peters, a friend of Gov. Bill Richardson, to Kilmer’s right?

Admit it. You’d forgotten he’d played Batman, didn’t you? You just saw the post headline and thought this was some new hallucination of Grant Morrison’s.

Majel Barrett Roddenberry: 1932-2008

majel-4699080Majel Barrett Roddenberry, beloved star of sci-fi phenomenon Star Trek, passed away early this morning surrounded by family and friends. Roddenberry was 76 years old. She began her acting career in the 1950’s with roles in such popular shows as "Leave it to Beaver," "Bonanza" and "The Lucy Show; but it was her numerous roles in the legendary Star Trek franchise that fans came to know and love her. Roddenberry had featured roles in almost every Star Trek television and film entity and became an iconic figure within the fan community.

Her roles included Nurse Chapel in Star Trek: The Original Series, Lt. M’ress in Star Trek: The Animated Series, Lwaxana Troi in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, and the voice of the USS Enterprise computer in almost every incarnation of the series, including lots of video games. However, it was the love affair between her and the late Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry that earned her the title "The First Lady of Star Trek." Over the course of their more then quarter-century love affair, she became not only Gene’s partner, but also his creative muse. Majel helped Gene expand the Star Trek universe and was an integral part of its continued legacy after his death, working on Earth: Final Conflict and Andromeda, as well as appearing in Babylon 5, Family Guy, and the Spider-Man animated series.

Majel recently completed reprising her role as the voice of the USS Enterprise for J.J. Abrams’ new Star Trek film.

Headline typo of the day

From the UGO list of Top 50 "WTF" moments in comics, discussing Speedy and his drug habit:

Sidekick Shoots Arrows and Heroine

Now that would have been a world-changing story. Roy Harper, jealous of Oliver Queen having lost his fortune (and presumably, Roy’s inheritance) and instead spending all his time with a hot chick a decade younger with a thing for fishnet stockings, decides to get rid of the pretty girl in the middle of a melee– a shot just goes wild, and suddenly it’s back to Green Arrow and Speedy, together again. Play it up as a sort of gender-switched Oedipus.

I mean, as long as you’re going to break the Comics Code anyway.

A rumor I just made up has it Gerry Conway actually had this as a story idea, but he later used it when writing for Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Evan Rachel Wood cast in Spider-Man musical

Evan Rachel Wood, one of the most respected young actresses today, will make her Broadway debut as Mary Jane Watson in Julie Taymor’s Spider-Man musical.  In an exclusive report at IESB, Wood confirmed she will portray the model with rehearsals beginning in June 2009.

Ironically, Evan lost out to Kirsten Dunst, who plays MJ in the movies, for the child lead in Interview with the Vampire.

She also said the producers are at work on actor Jim Sturgess to take on the lead.  Wood said they are, "still trying to convince him." Both displayed their singing skills in Taymor’s Across the Universe, which was released last year.

The musical will also feature  Norman Osborn/Green Goblin and Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson. Playbill in 2007 also listed the following parts:

The character breakdowns provide some insight to plot points as the character Arachne ("female, 20-35 years old, any ethnicity") is described as "a beautiful, boastful young woman turned into a spider for her hubris and lack of respect for the gods. She subsequently appears to Peter Parker and the audience as in turn a powerful spider-woman who comes from another time to inspire Peter; an otherworldly lover; a bride; a terrifying (and sexy) dark goddess of vengeance; a dance partner in a charged and violent spiders dance of death; and, finally, a lonely, fragile young woman." Casting is seeking a "strong Celtic, Balkan style, e.g., Sinead O’Connor," noting, "outside the box ideas are welcomed. Could be someone from the music industry."

Also, a "Geek Chorus" consisting of "three teenage boys and one girl" are described to "meet to ritualistically retell the greatest Spider-Man stories.

Bono and The Edge of U2 are providing the music and lyrics for the musical which is likely to debut in 2010. The book is from Taymor and Glen Berger (Underneath The Lintel) which had a reading in New York in July 2007.

Matthias "Teese" Gohl (Frida) will serve as musical supervisor.

On a related note, Alicia Silverstone, the former Batgirl, returns to the stage in the world premiere of Donald Margulies’ Time Stands Still. According to Variety, the cast also includes Anna Gunn (Deadwood), David Harbour (Quantum of Solace) and Robin Thomas (Damages).
