‘Lost’ Season 4 DVD previews

losy-dvd-3311276Before J.J. Abrams drove us all nuts with Star Trek, he spent years driving us nuts with Lost. The Season 4 DVDs hit the store on Tuesday, but we’ve already seen it (here’s Bob’s review) and we’ve finagled previews of some of the DVD extras. We’ll be doling them out over the next few days, as soon as we check to make sure that they’re spoiler-free if you haven’t seen the last season.

Here’s one on the difficulty of keeping track of the guns…

If only Plaxico had seen this clip beforehand.

Happy Repeal Day!

On this day 75 years ago, the Twenty-first Amendment was enacted, which repealed the Eighteenth Amendment, thereby ending Prohibtion in the United States.

So what does this have to do with comics? Well, without alcohol, the next Iron Man movie would have no plot (if you don’t know what we’re talking about, buy Iron Man: Demon in a Bottle) and people wouldn’t know what Munden’s Bar is about.

Many people still don’t know what Munden’s Bar is, but that’s a different problem.

Jon Sable Freelance and the Rockefeller Center tree lighting

jsfaoe120crop-5507222As you might have seen, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree was lit last night. But you probably didn’t know what was going around in the background… Jon Sable Freelance and Maggie the Cat wandering around.

If you’d like to know the real story of what went on last night, you can read Jon Sable Freelance: Ashes Of Eden for free!

The new Batman revealed?

Following the conclusion of Batman R.I.P., there’s been a tremendous amount of speculation on what will happen to the Dark Knight next. Luckily, ComicMix is on the case!

New images reveal that the latest interpretation of the Batman will be taking cues from the widespread financial troubles that all of us are going through, proving that even billionaire Bruce Wayne isn’t immune from the gyrations in the market, and even Wayne Enterprises can be caught in the credit crunch. But even though times are tough, the Batman is tougher.

Of course, he does have to tighten his utility belt a bit. Instead of the gaz-guzzling tanks and jet engines on wheels of years past, the new Batmobile is prepared for oil shortages and supply disruptions.

Call for artists: Help a reporter out

This came in over the e-transom this morning from Karen Leland, who’s working on a story for an artist’s magazine: "I’m looking to interview visual artists (painters, sculptors, photographers, etc.) who have used social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and others to promote and sell their art. Also any artists out there who are using art oriented message boards or forums."

You can reach her at kleland-at-scgtraining-d0t-com. Her deadline is 5:00 Pacific time, December 1st.

Blog no longer @Newsarama

In an announcement guaranteed to get lost between the death of Batman and everybody leaving the offices early for the Thanksgiving Day weekend, JK Parkin announced that all of the contributors to Blog@Newsarama are leaving:

It’s been about two and a half years since Blog@Newsarama was born, when myself, Kevin Melrose, Graeme McMillan, Tom Bondurant, Michael May, Shane Bailey, Chris Hunter and Stephanie Chan joined the Newsarama team “to bring you an engaging, thought-provoking and fun blog that you’ll want to come back to every day.” Since then we’ve added a few names and seen a few people leave, but hopefully in between all the Hollywood rumors, comic industry dust-ups and just general weirdness that made its way into the blog, we gave you guys something worth reading.

It’s kind of bittersweet, then, to announce that those of us who currently write for the blog are leaving Newsarama. It’s no secret that the site has gone through tremendous growing pains over the last few months and has been moving in a new direction since being purchased by Imaginova. Behind the scenes, there’s been a lot of growing pains as well, and we’ve reached the point where we think it’s better for us to move on. Nov. 30 will be our last day, and starting Dec. 1 you’ll be seeing a new crew take over the site.

The reasons behind it are depressingly familiar: technical problems (ironically, I wanted to post a farewell to them in their comments section and couldn’t), rough communication, and money.

No word yet as to where any of the bloggers will end up… but as soon as we know, we’ll have links for you. A tip of the hat to the distinguished co-opetition. And as for Imaginova– well, good luck finding bloggers cheap. Trust us, it’s a pain.

Rich Faber needs your help

buzzbot300-6603006I’m lifting this directly from Johanna Draper Carlson. Yes, again… but in this case, I hope she won’t mind, because Rich Faber, inker on Green Lantern, needs our help:

I first met him ages ago, back in the 90s, when he wanted a copy of a sketch Chris Sprouse did for me, to practice his inking. He’s kept at it, working on Roboy Red and Buzzboy, as well as a lot of other stuff.

Sadly, in August, his wife Traci was diagnosed with cancer, and they’re facing large medical bills. Here’s how he puts it (from the blog link above):

… lately things have gotten a little hairy, financially. While we have health insurance, it’s not covering everything. Medical bills and co-pays can truly be a drag. It’s been tough for us to maintain our regular work schedules between treatments (and Traci’s ensuing fatigue), doctor visits, and caring for our two-year-old son. … So we’re looking for ways to generate more income, in order to keep afloat.

He doesn’t want handouts (although I’m sure he wouldn’t mind any help) — instead, he wants to sell original art, t-shirts, and signed comics. He’s also taking commissions; email rich_faber(at)comcast(dot)net. (That’s also his Paypal account, in case you can donate, regardless of what he says.) They’re not hurting yet — but since Traci will be in treatment for at least a year, he’s planning ahead and trying to be responsible.

I know it’s tough times, and it seems that there’s always a request to help someone. There are plenty of deserving who need help, but if you can, check out Rich’s website and blog to see if there’s something you’re interested in.

So go. Rich has been nothing but a stellar professional and a friend to us here at ComicMix. Here’s his website, here’s his blog.

Umbrella Academy: The Movie

the-umbrella-academy-cover-issue-1-1810927Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that Universal Studios and Dark Horse Comics, the folks who brought us Hellboy II: The Golden Army, are continuing their long-standing relationship and fast-tracking a movie version of The Umbrella Academy. The Eisner-winning series was written by Gerard Way, former intern at DC Comics who later went on to international fame as the frontman for My Chemical Romance.

This proves what I’ve suspected for a long time: if you’re going to do anything big in the world– rock star, movie mogul, Eisner winner– you have to stop being an intern at DC.

Twilight, shockingly, is #1 this weekend; sequels announced

Yeah, yeah, Twilight is the top grossing movie of the weekend. No surprise. What is a surprise is the amount of money generated: over $70 million. Since the movie was comparatively low-budget, no big name stars or special effects, that’s really profitable.

Which leads to the stories of the sequels. We’d already discussed the making of #2 New Moon, but now there’s talk of filming #2 and #3, Eclipse, at the same time. It certainly makes sense– we’re dealing with ageless creatures, wouldn’t do good to have them looking older in a few years. Also no word about making #4, although that might be a good thing.
